I opened my eyes and sighed. By now, the woman sitting next to me had opened some glossy magazine and she was reading about the latest outburst of Britney Spears. While reading the article, she opened a bag of M&Ms and started eating. I sighed once again and asked myself why I couldn't be like that woman, just sitting there without any worries on my mind.
But sadly, I wasn't. It had been two and a half months now since I left Wilmington. I had spoken to Chad a few times on the phone, but neither of us had mentioned what happened at the airport or even gave a hint in that direction. But even though we didn't mention it, it was all I had been thinking of ever since I watched him walk away.
At first, I was confused, but after a while, I convinced myself that it was all a mistake. That must have been the reason Chad didn't bring it up during our conversations on the phone. He realised that he had made a mistake by kissing me and I shouldn't get my hopes up that he was loving me back.
Loving me back. I sadly smiled to myself and shoke my head lightly. I still couldn't believe it had taken so long. It was only after reliving that kiss about a million times in my mind, that I realised I had fallen head over feet for my best friend.
During the last year and a half, my feelings towards Chad had evolved from friendship into something much deeper. He was the one that was always there for me, even when he was so many miles away. Whenever I felt the need to talk, I could just grab the phone and he would listen and comfort me, no matter how busy he was and what he had been doing. He was able to make me laugh, even if I was down. But we could also have long talks about serious things. It felt liked we needed just one word, or if we were together one look, to understand what the other one ment. And the fact that his nickname now suited him better then ever made my feelings even stronger.
I sighed once again at my thoughts and felt that nervous feeling in my stomach that had been there for a couple of days. It had kept me out of my sleep for more than a week now. 'No!' I thought to myself. 'You're not going to get carried away this time. Just try to get some sleep, it wil do you good.'
And with that, I closed my eyes and tried to get some much needed sleep. I turned around a little until I found a comfortable position. Just at that moment, my I-pod decided to turn against me and started playing Us against the world by Play, the song Chad and I shared since forever. Friends always laughed at us when we started singing along whenever the song was played on the radio, but the lyrics described our relationship perfectly.
'Great, just great! That's the last song I need now!' I thought. Determined to get some sleep, I hit the forward button on my I-pod. Coldplay started playing Yellow and I finally was able to release my thoughts and drift off to sleep.
"When is Chad going to be here, daddy?" "He should be here any minute now, sweety." My father answered while pinching my hand softly. Not content with that answer I tried again, while keeping my eyes on the exit terminal where we were waiting. "But daddy..." I had only said two words when I saw him walking towards the end of the tunnel.. "There he is, there he is !" I screamed, released my fathers hand and started running towards the terminal, as fast as my little legs could carry me.
When Chad noticed me running towards him, he dropped his bag on the ground and opened his arms, just in time to catch me and pick me up. He hugged me for a moment and than put me back on the ground. He picked up his bag with his left hand, grabbed mine in his right one and we started walking towards my parents. "I am so glad you are finally here! I want to show you so much. I got a bike and daddy built a swing set for my birthday and.." "Wow, slow down princess ! I'm glad to be back, I missed you. And I take it you missed me too?" Chad said smiling at my enthousiasm. "Off course I missed you, pretty boy." I answered him. "Wait, what did you call me there ?" Chad asked in suprise. "Pretty boy. That's what mommy always calls you when she is talking about you to other people." I explained him when we stopped next to my parents. "Well, she shouldn't be calling me that. Nobody should. I'm cool, not pretty." He said with a slight blush on his cheeks and a look in my moms direction, who was smiling at our conversation. "But I like it. I want to call you pretty boy. Please?" I said putting on my best puppy face.
Every other eleven year old boy would have probably ignored my question. But even though I was only five, I knew that, coming from me, Chad couldn't and wouldn't ignore it. "For my princess, I'm willing to make a special exception. So yes, you can call me pretty boy if you like." I giggled and punched my little fist in the air as a sign of victory.
Then I heard a voice behind me ask "Miss, can you hear me?"
"Miss, wake up miss!" I slowly opened my eyes and realised where I was. I had been dreaming about the second summer Chad had been at my house. The battery of my I-pod had died while I had been sleeping and the stewardess was ticking on my shoulder to wake me up. "You need to fasten your seatbelt miss, we are getting ready to land in a few minutes." She said when she saw that I was awake. I put on my seatbelt and tried to swep the sleep out of my eyes. When I felt the plane started to go down, I put away my I-pod and felt the butterflies return.
When the plane had landed, everyone started to get up. Most of them wanted to get out of their seats as soon as possible. I watched them all for a moment and realised how much different personalities had been on this flight. Some men looked like they were headed to a very importent conference or bussiness meeting. There were a few people who probably had a family or a lot of friends waiting to see them. Then you had the familys: moms and dads with little kids, very busy to pick up all their stuff and make sure the children were around when they left the plane. Two rows before me I noticed a boy and a girl get up. They were obviously very much in love, which was clear just by the way they looked at each other. And for people who didn't notice the little looks they gave each other, there was always the big engagement ring she had on her finger.
I didn't know it was possible, but watching them made me even more notious then I already was. But there was no turning back now. I started heading to the door and smiled politely at the stewardess before getting out. Almost at the end of the exit terminal, I stopped, closed my eyes for a moment and took in one last deep breath. 'You can do this!' I though to myself. I opened my eyes again and walked towards the end of the terminal and then into the arrival area.
I only had to look around for a second to find him. There he was, more handsome and beautiful than ever. And when his eyes met mine, I just forget my worries and the world around me for an instant. It was just him and me, stuck in a moment. I dropped my bag, ran towards him and jumped into his open arms. It felt so good to see him and hug him again.
I just held him close for a moment before letting go. "It's great to see you again." I told him honestly. "Same here." He answered. He hesitated for a moment and then said : "Everyone is so excited that you're back. We have a couple of busy filming days coming up, but they are throwing a party at Lees place next Thursday." I realised that was not what he had planned to say, but I chose to ignore it. "Nice!" I smiled. "Now let's go and get my bags. I want to get out of here, I need some fresh air after this flight."
After getting my bags, we walked out of the airport to Chads car. Just before exiting the airport a flash of the radio playing inside caught my ear. "...You can't start a fire, you can't start a fire without a spark. This guns for hire, even if we're dancing in the dark..." I couldn't help but smile at the irony of this song playing at this moment and just felt happy for a moment when we walked out into the fresh air.
But when Chads car came in sight, the memories of my last visit quickly came back and I realised this wasn't going to be as easy as I thought it would be.
