When I dance, I wear:

Anything shimmery, glitzy and colorful -- the more sparkles the better! Whatever is appropriate to the time period and geographic location of the dance itself -- I've done extensive research on costum Black, of course. Whatever my seventeen troupemates are wearing. Something flowing and comfortable that will allow me to express the goddess within It's what's underneath that counts, and my costume shows as much of what's underneath as my teacher will let me!

My favorite music to dance to is:

George Abdo, Eddie Kochak, Mohammed el-Bakkar -- perfection can never been improved upon! Drums, drums and more drums. It doesn't even have to be Arabic -- just drummy! Cheb Mami, Alabina, imports, exports -- I like anything I can really feel. Bonus points if it has a drum solo! Dead Can Dance, Shadowsphere, Bella Morte -- nothing too peppy, mind you. Recordings made by sociologists and anthropologists studying the culture and people of the middle east Lorena McKennit, Sting, something ethereal and flowing Music? The music isn't important -- it's all about the sexy costume, isn't it?

What made you decide to try belly dancing?

I wanted to express the goddess within me I became interested in the dance while researching my Master's thesis on the Ouled Nail My boyfriend says I'm so sexy I'd look great in one of those little bra thingies! The costumes, the music, the camraderie -- what's not to love? I dream of being swept off my feet by Farid el-Atrache -- or at least a reasonable facsimile It gives me a place to wear my chain mail, and besides, my snake needs to earn his keep somehow It's invigorating and empowering -- I love the feeling of sisterhood I have with my troupe

How does your audience express their appreciation for your dance?

We get a lot of applause and zaghareets from our audience members I frequently have dollar bills showered over my head during the drum solo I dance mostly for myself, and the empowerment I feel is what matters I occasionally have wealthy sheiks offer me jewels and marriage proposals -- or did I see that in a movie? I can tell they love me when they look slightly less doleful and angsty after I perform My audience is usually other dancers, and many of them compliment me on the obvious research I put into my choreographies With money tucked into my bra or belt -- and sometimes if I'm feeling frisky, I'll do a backbend and grab it with my teeth!

For whom do you prefer to dance?

I love to dance at nightclubs, but I dream of dancing at Burning Man -- maybe next year! I dance at haflas and restaurants, mostly -- I enjoy dancing for families, children, other dancers -- especially anyone who will I dance at festivals, cultural events and arts centers We dance at workshops, festivals and street fairs -- and Ren Faires if they're not too picky about authenticity! Bachelor parties -- I love the attention and the tips! I dance at retreats, healing ceremonies and birthing rituals, but I am happiest when I dance for myself I dream of performing at the Cairo Hilton
