Concerning Mary Sues.
I hate the Twilight books.
I hate them, I hate them, I hate them.
I can imagine you Twilight fans gaping in horror at the screen. Yes, Kitty hates Twilight. With a burning passion hotter than a thousand suns. The books are boring. It's like badly-written fanfiction, and Bella is easily one of the most unlikeable characters in recent memory.
Wanna know why?
Because she is a Mary Sue.
(if you don't know what that is, kindly Google it.)
Let's count the reasons why, shall we?
The books describe Bella as plain.Yet allllllllllllll of the boys in her town fall all over her. She'salso helpless (OMG EDWORD SAV MEEEEEEE!!!!111), weak, docile, a crappy friend, falsely modest,(but OMG she's clumsy so that makes it all better), and she spends the entire series trying to get into Edward's pants.
Now, after writing that, I became worried that maybe, I had created a Mary-Sue in some of my stories. Was I being hypocritical? As mentioned before, I've re-read all of them, did some re-writing, and cringed at some of our earlier work. So, I went and tried the Mary-Sue Litmus Test (at http://www.onlyfiction.net/marysue2.html)and here are the results.
Brooke (Nick story): 19
Cylvie (Ryan story): 26 - I knew this one was coming.
Ellen (Shaant story): 17
Gabby (Spencer story): 18
Katie (Adopted series): 15
Lynne (Brendon story): 27
Ronnie (Mike story): 6
And the results can be based on this:
0-10 points: The Anti-Sue. Your character is the very antithesis of a Mary-Sue. Why are you even taking this test?
11-20 points: The Non-Sue. Your character is a well-developed, balanced person, and is almost certainly not a Mary Sue. Congratulations!
21-35 points: Borderline-Sue. Your character is cutting it close, and you may want to work on the details a bit, but you're well on your way to having a lovely original character. Good work.
36-55 points: Mary-Sue. Your character needs some work in order to be believable. But despair not; you should still be able to salvage her with a little effort. Don't give up.
56-70 points: Über-Sue. You've got one hell of a Mary-Sue on your hands here, and it's not going to be easy to set things right. But do your best. There may be hope for you yet.
71 points or more: Irredeemable-Sue. You're going to have to start over, my friend. I know you want to keep writing, but no. Just no.
So, according to this test, MC and I have created one Anti-Sue (Ronnie's always been my favourite character), four Non-Sues, and two Borderline-Sues. Serious re-writing is in order for the Brendon and Ryan stories, amirite? I'll get to work on that soon...
