TRACK

Track at Ray South What does spring make you think of? Easter? Spring break? Well for the Ray south track team it means work, meets and a whole lot of pain if you’re not used to all the running that comes with joining track. So, how did we awesome Cardinals do this year? Good. The Ray south boys won most of their meets, while the girls got second or third. Congrats to Marqus Moye for beating the hundred meter dash record. Marqus ran a total of 11 seconds and 7miliseconds. There is also a new record to beat if you’re becoming a thrower. Kevin Adams threw a total of 164 feet in discus. There are five groups in track that you can join. Sprinters; which is the 100 and 200 meters, Long distance; 400 (Once around the track) 800 (twice around the track) and the 1600 (aka; the mile), Hurtles; jumping over those things that are called hurtles, Jumpers; long jump, triple jump and high jump (you don’t get that stick thing until you’re in high school), and Throwers; shot-put, where you throw that huge ball (girl is a six pound ball and the boys is a nine pound ball) and discus, those round ones that look like Frisbees but way like 2 or 2.5 pounds. Let’s talk about hard work. During the last part of February all threw out March, the track team conditions. That’s where you break off into your little groups and doing something for eight minutes at a time. If you’re a long distance as your primary event then you’ll go with that coach and run around the halls as many times as that coach wants you to for eight minutes. When it’s nice out you’ll just stay with your event group and run your event. As a hurtle you’ll go with Mrs. Hutton for upper body building for the cold half. Partner push-ups, working with weights, and partner sit up’s are all that you do for eight mintues. Those boys’s who thinks that’s easy, do a push up with your ankles on some ones back and focus all your weight to your upper body. Do a real push up for one to two mintues. Tell me your results. As a sprinter, you’ll be working with Coach T first, who will work on you core, aka your tummy and abdominals. Straight leg hangs and sit ups are the best way to do this, and the more you do it now will hurt a lot less when you get there. If you don’t think so, think about how much time you spend on your tummy mussels and stuff. If you’re a thrower first, you’ll work with Coach Johnson. He’ll work on your agilities. Such as running threw these bags and keeping your eyes up. Jumping over those bags continually, or running around cones and using your right or left foot to propel you, jumping with jump ropes 20 times. This is actually fun, because you’re either in the café doing this or in the gym. Jumpers will have Miss. Roachka first, and you’ll be jumping up the stairs that lead to the boy’s locker room for gym. These exercises in clued bunny hops, lunges up the stairs, hopping on one foot (your dominate foot first, then your none dominate foot.) up the stairs. Then you run back down. This is the most relaxing, except for when Miss. Roachka does electric chairs. You sit like you were on a chair and sit straight up against the wall. There’s no chair, which is painful. So there’s the first part of conditioning. The warmer parts is when you go outside and learn about your primary events. Of course for about a week you’ll be running about seven or eight 200 and 100 and
