|Chapter 2: Spilling Over|
As I was writing this, I noticed that I had never described Trista's appearance to you guys. Her eyes are a light brown and her fur is like a bark-brown color. You don't need to know what she looks like as a human for a while so don't worry about that. Any kind of messages are welcome! Hope you guys like!Chapter 2: Spilling Over Trotting back towards Jacob with a deer in my mouth was not the easiest thing I had done in my life. I had managed to get a healthy fat deer and was quite proud of myself until I realized how heavy the extra meat was. Still, I thought it ought to cure Jacob’s need for food. Jacob was still snoozing by the time I managed to haul my kill to where I left him. I dropped the deer and went to sit beside him as he slept. He still looked as though he were in pain; smelt like it too. But sleep seemed to be helping. I sat patiently for ten minutes before I barked directly in his ear. He awoke with a start and tried to jump up in alarm but his muscles quickly protested and he fell back to the ground. I barked in laughter as he growled at me. ‘What the hell was that for?!’ ‘You are immensely uninteresting in your sleep. Besides, dinner’s ready.’ Jacob lifted his head as he sniffed the air. ‘Deer?’ ‘I didn’t know you had a preference. Will you just eat the fat thing?’ ‘I would if I could get up but thanks to someone my muscles aren’t in the greatest condition right now!’ ‘Oh, shut up! You’re alright! Just tell me which part you want!’ ‘What?’ ‘The deer for Pete’s sake! Leg, rump, chest, neck? What will it be Black?’ ‘… I don’t really care at this point. I just want to eat.’ I snorted as I trotted over and tore away at the animal’s hide. ‘I could’ve told you that half a day ago.’ Jacob didn’t reply. Instead he lay his head back down too tired to keep it up any longer. After a bit of clawing and tearing, I managed to separate a chunk of meat from the beast’s back leg. Proud of my accomplishment I pranced over to Jacob’s head and lay the meat down near his mouth. He chomped it down with delight and quickly requested some more. This pattern continued until nearly all the meat was gone. I guess it was a good thing to go for the fat one of the herd. When Jacob had had his fill he drowsed back to sleep and I went hunting for the second time that day. Jacob hadn’t left nearly enough meat on the first deer to satisfy my hunger and I knew he was going to be hungry again later on anyway. After my second catch - a deer that was considerably smaller than the last - much the same happened as before. I ended up waking Jacob from his slumber and I ended up feeding him as he was still too weak to get up on his own. He was getting better though. He could now prop himself up to lie on his stomach rather than his side and when he was finished eating he didn’t feel an immediate need to sleep again. I took these as good signs at first but they quickly became annoying when Jacob started up conversation. ‘You’ve hunted twice today. Aren’t you tired at all?’ ‘Nope.’ was my short reply. I had no real interest in chatting to him. ‘You could sleep y’know.’ ‘And give you the chance to run away? Keep trying Black!’ He fell silent for a while, letting frustration roll through his body, when it disappeared with a sudden spark of pure curiosity. ‘Why didn’t you listen to Sam?’ ‘What do you mean? ‘When he gave an Alpha Command you just stood there and defied him. Why could you do that?’ I hung my head in shame and avoided his piercing gaze. I turned words over in my head as I thought of how to explain it to him. Sensing my hesitation he tried to fill in the blanks himself. ‘You don’t know why?’ ‘I have theories!’ I snapped. ‘Care to share them? Or do I have to probe your mind to find the answers?’ I chuckled at that. ‘Good luck Black. Just try probing my head. Go on! Let’s see what you’ve got!’ Jacob snarled and stared into my eyes as he accepted my challenge. His hard stare soon broke and his eyes filled with confusion and astonishment. I had to chuckle once more. ‘Find anything interesting?’ ‘I didn’t find anything at all.’ ‘Not even the tiniest smidgen?’ ‘Nothing. Are you really that much of a freak?’ I huffed and stuck my nose in the air. ‘I’ll remember this the next time I go hunting for you.’ Jacob snorted. ‘Like you’d leave me starving. As being part of the same pack as I am you feel obligated to keep me safe.’ ‘… That’s not true.‘ I brought my head down and watched my paws as I scratched the dirt beneath them. Jacob cocked his head to one side. ‘What d’you mean?’ ‘… Well… In theory of course… I don’t think that we do belong in the same pack…’ ‘And why do you think that?’ he persisted. ‘Well, I mean… Ah, forget it! Forget I said anything!’ Frustrated by my being unable to tell him I plopped down on my belly and pouted. ‘Tell me now!!’ he barked. By reaction I growled back at him. ‘Who’re you to be giving orders? You’re no Alpha Black! So back off!!’ ‘You didn’t back off from me when I told you to leave me the hell alone! Now I’m going to return the favour! Tell me why your different!’ Something inside of me snapped and I jumped up in absolute rage as I screamed, ‘I DON’T FLIPPIN’ KNOW DAMN IT ALL!!!!’ right in his furry russet face. Teeth bared and not thinking properly, I began ranting. Never a good thing. ‘I know I’m different and a freak and a weirdo and a creep and all the other things you guys call me behind my back!! I know!!! And it’s not because I’m female because you can all read Leah’s thoughts and she falls under command in the blink of an eye but not me!! Not me!!!! And I don’t know why!! As far as I know there’s nothing majorly different between me and Leah; between me and you! But, God! It is unbelievably frustrating! Sometimes, when we’re hunting a dog-gone leech I screw up the entire formation because I didn’t hear Embry’s change of plans or I end up in trouble because I wouldn’t pull back when Sam told me to! And then when I do hear you guys it’s all about my screw-ups. Like I didn’t feel like crap already!’ I panted as I slowly began to calm down. I was getting it all out and it felt good but also heavy and tiring. Soon I plopped myself down again as I quietly whimpered to myself but I was sure Jacob could hear it. ‘I just…’ I let out a long sigh as I continued pouring out my emotions. ‘I don’t mean to be a freak and a burden on every person I know but somehow that’s how it always plays out. I guess I thought that by following you I could prove my worth to the others; prove myself to you. I wanted to come with you and I wanted to help you. But you wouldn’t let me so like an idiot I pursued you and now I’m just an annoyance all over again. I mean, look at you; you can’t even stand up let alone walk. I’ve made such a big fool of myself…’ I could feel tears starting to prickle my eyes. Great. Well, this is what I get for spilling everything at once. I yelped in surprise when I felt pressure and body heat press against my side. I looked over and was extremely surprised to see Jacob lying beside me. ‘I can too walk, you idiot. You’re not that good. Now get some sleep. You’ve been running as long as I have and you’ve been hunting for the both of us.’ I stared right into his eyes; deep brown connecting with it’s lighter shade. ‘Promise you won’t leave?’ I begged. He pushed his head against mine and replied, ‘Promise.’ I gave a small nod before I lay my head down on my paws. As one tear fell from my eyes I felt him laying his head on top of mine and was surprised by the sense of comfort the action brought me. ‘Maybe we do belong to the same pack after all…’ I thought as I drifted into a dreamless slumber.
