I sprawled out on the couch, glancing at my phone every now and then. 12 minutes. I thought, still counting down to when Alex and Jack got here. The TV flashed a car commercial across the screen and I immediately lost interest. Thankfully, my phone vibrated on the couch cushion just in time. It was a text from Ray. “Bahamas are great. I’m getting even tanner then before and my parents and I are getting along. What have you been doing? I miss you.” it read. “Sounds like you guys are having fun. I’m having a great time here. Jack and Allie are coming over soon. I bet they’ll ask where you are.” I texted back. I flipped the TV off and sat in the dim, quiet living room. 9 minutes. I laughed, they’re not going to be on time and I’m going to give them hell for it. I thought as I looked down at Ziggy on the floor. I tapped the couch and Ziggy jumped up next to me. He curled up against my hip and I rubbed gently behind his ears. My phone vibrated again, another text from Ray. “I have to get home before they leave! I miss them! When are they leaving?” “They’re leaving Sunday night. Gotta go though, they’ll be here in a few. Keep on partying. Love you.” I said, throwing my phone on the couch. Ziggy looked up at me from his place on the couch and began to lick my hand. “Do you miss them Ziggy?” No answer. “I do too.” I answered, lifting him onto my lap. Being home alone is no fun, where are they? I thought, glancing at me phone. 5 minutes. I twiddled my thumbs in a circle, counting down. Once that became boring, I got up and walked toward the door, opening it and stepping out into the darkness. The air was getting cooler, fall was coming. I let Ziggy out and closed the front door, sitting down on the step. The sky was clear and the stars were shining, along with the moon which was a deep milky white. I sat waiting, picking yellowing leaves off the bush beside me. Ziggy ran around the front yard and was heading toward the neighbors house before the electric fence kicked in. He jolted slightly and ran toward me. “Nice job dumb ass. When will you learn that the yard stops?” I asked as he curled into my lap. I shivered slightly and cuddled closer to the fuzzy dog on my lap. 2 minuets. Suddenly a taxi pulled up in front of my driveway, two boys in skinny jeans and American Apparel hoodies stepped out of the car. They pulled their suitcases out behind them, tipped the cabbie, and stood in my front lawn as the taxi drove away. I stood up, leaving Ziggy on the floor. I watched the outlines of the two boys who stood in front of me. Suddenly the taller of the two figures dropped it’s bags and came charging toward me. “JADE!” he shouted, vaulting the bushes in front of him and picking me up into a hard squeeze. I giggled as Jack spun me around several times then placed me on the ground. “Did you miss me?” he asked, looking down with a bright smile on his face. “Of course Jack Jack! How could I not miss you?!” I asked, hugging him once more. Alex walked up beside us, standing patiently waiting for us to stop hugging. Once we did I glanced at Jack then at Alex. Then at Jack again. “Uhh, I’ll take Ziggy inside and find myself some food.” Jack said, letting go of my waist and picking up Ziggy from the ground. They disappeared behind the white wooden door and it was Alex and I alone under the starry sky. “I missed you.” Alex said, standing stiffly in front of me. He smiled suddenly and slowly began to walk toward me. I ran toward him and met him half-way, jumping into his arms and giggling. “I missed you.” I whispered once he put me on my feet again. He grinned once more and brushed his fingers through my hair, kissing my forehead. “How do I stand staying away from you for so long?” he asked, leaning his head on mine. “I don’t know. How do you do it?” I asked, smiling and kissing him deeply. “Hmm. I guess it’ll just be a mystery. I’m just so glad we’re together. This is going to be a great vacation. Away from Baltimore, away from my parents, away from work, away from everything.” he kissed me again. “Jade you need more mayo.” Jack said, opening the door, throwing the empty mayo container at my back , and closing the door. “Everything except my annoying best friend.” Alex sighed, bending down and picking up the container. “But it’s ok. I finally have you again.” he grabbed my hand and we walked into the house. We walked into the kitchen and found Ziggy sitting in the kitchen sink and Jack laying on his back on the island countertop, eating a sandwich to big for his mouth. Man this was going to be an interesting weekend. ------------------------ “And then Zack ran into the living room and fell right on his naked ass.” Jack shouted, shoving three marshmallows into his mouth. “Yeah! And that’s why we don’t play strip poker in the hot tub anymore.” Alex laughed, throwing a marshmallow into the air and catching it in his mouth. I fell over on the bed, laughing hysterically. “Why the hell did you guys start a strip poker game in the first place?” I giggled, throwing a marshmallow at Jack. “That’s a whole ’nother story in itself.” Alex said, taking a swig of beer. “When’s your Dad going to be home anyway? It’s like midnight.” he asked, looking at the neon green numbers dancing on my blue walls. “I have no clue. Like I said, hospital, police station, many other places. He told me he’d probably be gone awhile.” I said, hugging Alex’s arm tightly. “I see. Well what should we do now? Because I’m full and tired.” Jack said, throwing his empty red plastic cup into my garbage can and dropping the almost empty bag of marshmallows on the nightstand. “Yeah same. Bedtime anyone?” Alex said, drinking the last of his beer and throwing the cup away. I nodded my head and laid down next to Jack, pulling Alex down with me. “Goodnight guys.” I said, shifting slightly and closing my eyes. “Goodnight Jade.” their voices said in unison, one from either side of me. I really did miss being sandwiched by two of my best friends. --------------------------- I woke up and smiled to see Jack and Alex still snuggled closely to me. I kissed both of them on the cheek and climbed over Jack’s sleeping form. I opened my bedroom door and walked down the hall, opening my dad’s bedroom door. He wasn’t there. I looked at the clock on the bedside table, 11:23AM. He was probably downstairs making breakfast. I turned and walked down the stairs, turning to the kitchen. “Dad?” I called, walking in and finding him sitting at the kitchen table. “Hey. The boys aren’t up?” he asked, looking up at me. “Nope. You didn’t call or anything last night. What time did you get home? How did everything go?” I asked, sitting down across from him and taking a sip of the glass of orange juice already poured. “I got home around 3AM, and everything went good. Nate just needed stitches above his eye, under his lip, and on his chin. Just around 50 or so. Alex is fine. I got him out of jail. Everything’s fine. Why don’t you go wake up the boys and we can get breakfast on the road.” Dad said, dropping his folded newspaper on the chair beside him. I woke up the boys and they stampeded now the stairs to the kitchen, eager to eat breakfast. We all ate at the kitchen table, talking about what we had been up to since the tour ended, and the tours that were scheduled for the fall. After dinner the boys and I went to the mall and the movies and came home around 8PMish. We partied a little at home since Dad was gone with his friends, then went to bed. Another night of being a Jade sandwich. --------------------------- Sunday was uneventful. It rained all day, and was pretty cold and lame, so we stayed home. The three of us hung out in my room, playing video games and watching movies. “You lose!” I shouted, rubbing it in Jack’s face. We were playing Guitar Hero and he had lost, again. “You lose! I win! You lose! I Win!” I danced around the room in my PJ’s, green and purple plaid pants and a purple tank top. “Shut up! Why must you constantly embarrass me!” he shouted, slumping onto the couch. “Aww Jacky. You’re just mad that you’re not the master. Once again I have beaten you at your own game.” I stopped dancing and climbed into Alex’s lap, dropping the guitar on the floor and smiling at Jack. He stuck his tongue out at me and I buried my head in Alex’s chest. “Loser.” Jack whispered, standing up and walking out of the room. “Freak.” I shouted after him. “I love how you two love each other.” Alex said, squeezing my waist and kissing my neck. “I’m leaving tonight.” he whispered, twisting my hair around his finger. “Let’s make it special?” he asked, kissing behind my ear. “Of course.” I said, kissing him back. “But what about Jack, and my dad?” I asked. “We’ll get them out of here, or we could just lock the basement door.” he laughed. “That’s such a stupid idea Alex Gaskarth. Locking my basement door. C’mon.” Ten minutes later, Alex and I were locked in the basement, stripped of our clothes and wrapped up in a blanket, making our last night special. --------------------- “Goodbye Jade.” Jack said, hugging me and throwing his bags into the cab and climbing into it himself. “Bye Jack Jack.” I called into the car. “Bye Jade. I love you. I can’t believe I agreed to leaving. I’ll miss you so much. I’m sure I’ll be back in a month or two. The band’s going to be very busy though, so I can’t make any promises.” he kissed me hard and hugged me once again. “Bye. I’ll miss you so much. But I’ll always love you.” I said, throwing his bag into the car. “I’ll always love you too. Always and forever.” Alex said, climbing into the cab and kissing my hand as he pulled away. My eyes watered. I had just gotten over having to say goodbye to him once, but having to do it a second time just wasn’t fair. I whipped my eyes and walked into the house, slumping down on the couch. I shoved my face into a pillow and began to cry softly. I’m going to miss him. Both of them. Suddenly my phone vibrated. I pulled it out of my pocket. It was a text from Alex. “Always and forever.” it read. I smiled and texted him back. “Always and forever.” I whipped my eyes again, and hugged the pillow tightly, allowing a small, thankful grin wash over my face. I just realized now, that no matter how far away we are from each other, he will always love me. I will always love him. We will always be together. Always and forever.
