She sat at the grand piano, her fingers dancing across the ivory keys; they seemed to barely touch them, but the rich and pure sound of the instrument said she was.
But the notes that were produced were nothing compared to her voice. It seemed to reverberate through him. It was deep and rich.
She stopped playing abruptly, pulling him out of the reverie that her voice had put him in.
"What are you doing here?" Her voice was harsh. She didn't need to turn around for him to know that she was adressing him. He was the only other person in the room.
"I wanted to hear you play once more." His voice held sorrow, and a carefully hidden desire.
The desire to hear her say those three small words.
I love you. That was all he wanted to hear. Was it so hard to say?
For her, yes.
Her laugh was cold, and it brought him chills. It made the hair at the back of his neck stand on end.
It was nothing like the laugh he had fallen in love with.
"If that was the case, you could play those st-" She seemed to choke on the word. She paused slightly before continuing. "Those recording of yours."
"I did. But it wasn't the same." His voice was quiet.
Another cold laugh.
He sighed slightly, before walking over to her. He sat beside her on the bench, taking her cold hand in his.
"I'm sorry if I hurt you." He looked down at the glimering keys in front of him. "I didn't mean to. You. You mean the world to me. I can't live without you." His gaze met hers, and she could see the deep shadows under his eyes. The haunted look. The emptyness in his eyes.
"It's a bit too late for that isn't it?"
"I know. And I'm sorry. I just. I need you." His grip on her hand tightened slightly.
"And I you." She fought with herself. She wanted to say it. To admit she needed him as much as he needed her, if not more. But she couldn't. Something seemed to stop her.
Whenever she wanted to say it, her tongue seemed to become knotted, and her throat closed up.
"I'm sorry." She whispered, before getting up and heading towards the door.
He was behind her in an instant.
"Don't go." He pulled her close, kissing her neck lightly. "Please."
She turned to face him, her eyes half lidded, and her gaze not meeting his; it was focused on his chest.
"Why shouldn't I go?" The words were pleading.
"BecauseI need you." He murmured, pressing his lips to hers, praying to every God he knew that she would respond.
She did.
She pressed her lips eagerly to his, before pulling back slightly, to whisper three words.
"I love you."
"And I you."
