I looked at Tsuku, expecting an answer, but she had already passed out, which was good. The pain she would have experienced had she been awake would be unbearable. I felt my cheeks grow hot as I lifted her shirt for a better look at her side. I saw two things that made me gasp. The first was her ribcage, clearly visible.
She really is malnourished.
The second thing I saw was a large portion of her side, the skin pealing off to reveal the purply-pink color of new skin that was still creating itself and white bone. I turned away, getting a sick feeling in my stomach.
“Whoa, Ku- Shuichi! Your face is green! Whatcha see?” asked Kuwabara, stepping forward to look. I held up my hand, signaling him to stop, and he did. I turned back around after gathering my senses and taking a deep breath. I quickly added a few more herbs to the bowl and started to apply the medicine. Even in sleep, Tsuku flinched. Her friend, after seeing Tsuku’s side, had started crying again. I hushed her. I needed to concentrate. After I applied the cream, I got some bandages and had the girl help me wrap her wound. She did so.
“Wh-what now?” she asked.
“She just needs some rest. Preferably on her right side. She doesn’t need to be sitting up right now. Where is her room?” I asked, looking at her.
“Huh? Oh. Follow me,” she said. I carefully picked up Tsuku and slowly followed her.
Hmm… she seems familiar. I can’t put my finger on it, but I think I know her from somewhere.
‘Hn. So you think so, too?’ said a voice in my head.
Yes. I just can’t place where I know her from.
‘Same here. I know she was at the mall yesterday, talking to… uh…’
Tsuku.
‘Hn.’
I nodded to myself as I followed the girl up the stairs. She showed me the room and I carefully set Tsuku on the bed.
“Thank you… uh…”
“Jaede.”
“Thank you, Jaede.” I extended my hand.
“I’m Shuichi, by the way.” She looked at my hand for a moment and then realized she was supposed to shake it.
Kind of slow, isn’t she?
“Now I want you to stay with her, okay? Let me know when she wakes up.”
“Got it,” she said, taking a seat at Tsuku’s side. I went back downstairs to where the rest of the gang was. The demon girl was still unconscious, but Yusuke had propped her up against a chair and had tied her to it.
“So… now we just wait for Koenma?” he asked.
“Yes,” I nodded. I had already contacted him. So we waited.
