Blooming mist

Chapter 3 {is it me or is my luck changing?}

I awoke in delight for the first time ages for what I had experienced last night was not a nightmare but a dream. In this dream, Victor and I were at the yearend prom and I was the belle of the ball. Victor and I slow danced to every song. But the most wonderful thing was that we were both in love. Suddenly everyone else in the room froze and we noticed a pack of vampires smirking at us ready for a snack. I grabbed Victor’s arm in fear as the group of vampires had circled us. I closed my eyes hoping all the evil would just go away. But that is when Victor swept me off my feet and ran for the exit. We successfully escaped and ran underneath a tree on top of a steep hill.

“There. We should be safe now,” he said looking around the area.

I wasn’t exactly sure why it came to this conclusion but I was safe in Victor’s arms.

And that is when my stupid alarm clock had to ruin my most amazing dream I had ever experienced. But my alarm clock is usually my hero to my nightmares. Well as you may have gotten used to now welcome to my boring repetitive life. Let’s start by step one getting dressed. I jumped out of bed surprisingly not as tired as I usually was. Making my way over to the closet I thought that I should wear something to make me stand out for Victor. It took a while but I finally settled for a long white, lacy skirt and a light pink top the read 'I LOVE MY CRAZY FRIENDS!' in dark pink writing. I hoped Victor would like it. I also needed some nice jewellery so I ran over to the jewellery box that had once belonged to my mother. This time I picked out a silver heart necklace and a matching bracelet. I also put on a silver friendship ring Tori had given me when we were younger. Satisfied, I went to the bathroom to apply makeup and shower. After a nice long shower, I applied my usual black eye shadow and eye liner but this time I added some luscious red lipstick. I blow dried my hair and styled my bangs over my left eye. After all of that, I finally made my way to the kitchen for breakfast. Today, I settled for a protein bar and freshly squeezed glass of orange juice. After finishing up breakfast I gathered my almost complete homework and books then shoved them in my backpack. After putting on my shoes I rushed out of the house praying that I wouldn’t be late. I knew by now my only option was to cut through the ally. My vampire fear has not got the best of me today... yet. As I walked down the dark and narrow path between two large buildings, I heard something. It was a women moaning but I also heard someone was drinking something or someone. 'Get a grip, you wimp!' I thought to myself. It can't be a vampire can it? What if it wants to feed on my next? Could this be the last moment of my life at the least as a human?

Then I saw a dark figure stepping out of a corner where the sucking noise was coming from. All I remember before I fainted was those bright crimson eyes, the eyes that haunt my sleep. I fell backwards on the cold, hard ground. But before I even scraped the bottom, I felt warm hands swoop down and catch me and lower me to the ground. Then, everything went black but I felt safe. I awoke to a chocolate-coloured haired boy peering down at me. Victor, I realised. I felt dizzy. He held out his hand and I grabbed it and I pulled myself up. His dreamy dark brown eyes shone in the darkness of the alley. I stuttered,

"Th-th-thank y-you V-Victor," I thanked him still frightened

His eyes met mine and he muttered, "What were you thinking?" in a irritated voice.

Oh great. Now the one guy I like thinks I'm a wimp.

"Well, I guess I'd better get to school," I said, changing the subject. I started to walk and Victor followed me from behind.

We walked all the way to school, not talking to each other. It was an awkward moment. Once we arrived, I knew we were so late. But on the bright side I wasn’t eaten by a vampire right? When we walked into the secretary’s office, she yelled at me.

"Miss Acacia! Late again? And I thought you had kicked the habit." She wrote down something in her blue binder. Victor stepped out from behind me and the grumpy secretary noticed him in shock. "Mr.-Mr. Dusk? Late on your second day?" she stuttered then wrote something else down in that binder. That's where she keeps all the students' records, or so I'm told.

“Looks like you are coping Miss Acacia’s habit and trust me you would not want to get into that habit,” she told him in a serious look in her eyes.

Victor cleared his throat and looking down at the floor.

"It's my fault Miss Amabel is late. Don’t you even think about blaming her!” Victor said in a sophisticated voice.

“Ama was walking on her way to school when I just too happened to notice her. But something seemed wrong about her. Apparently she was experiencing a Seizure. She lost her balance and plummeted strait for the hard cold stone ground. But before she hit the ground which could have resulted in extreme danger, I rushed in for a rescue. I stayed by her side, trying to revive her but I guess we're going to get in trouble just because I tried to save a life." Victor said very seriously.

Then he muttered under his breath, "Not kill."

The secretary looked shocked by his story and didn't know what to believe. She nodded and erased the notes in the binder of doom. When she looked up, her eyes filled with concern.

"Go to your classes. I believe you have history with Mr. Sweet." She said shooing us out of the office.

We nodded and walked out of her office. Once outside, I said, "Wow, Victor. You sure know how to talk your way out of trouble."

Victor acted like he hadn't heard me and just kept walking.

"Thank you," I told him sincerely. He finally turned to me and said, "Oh, don't thank me just yet," and he walked away.

I walked quickly all the way to class because running was against the school rules and I didn't feel like getting into trouble today. Sorry Mark, I thought. When I got to grade 11 history, it was already halfway through. Mr. Sweet looked at me with concern. Now, don't get fooled by the name 'Sweet' because he is anything but sweet to me when I get into trouble or am tardy. But now, he looked as if he actually cared about me. Freaky. He spoke in his low voice,“Oh, Miss Acacia. So good of you to join us today. Mr. Dusk has told me everything." He said in a bright smile.

I looked around the room and saw Victor sitting in his usual spot in the corner, looking tired but yet blushing again. It was almost as if that blood incident had never happened yesterday. I looked at the clock. It was 8 : 45 am. Boy, am I lucky Victor covered for me. I relaxed a little at this thought.I spent the rest of the day, like yesterday, watching Victor and thinking about him. I can't help it anymore.

Lunch came quicker than it had any other day. I practically ran to the cafeteria and not one teacher yelled at me. Maybe it was because that story Victor told the secretary had spread. Who cares? I thought. I'm free! Today at lunch, I had another hotdog and sat down beside Tori at our usual table.

"What are you so happy about?" she said, sounding concerned, "You could have died! Luckily Victor was there to save you!"

I gave her a weird look.

"Oh, does everyone know that rumour?" I raised my eye brows.

Tori's mouth dropped open.

"You mean you didn't really get a seizure?" she was shocked.

I rolled my eyes.

"No... I was just late again." I didn't feel like it was the best time to tell Tori about my fear of vampires so I kept on going.

"Victor made up that story so I didn't, I mean we didn't get into trouble,” I insured her.

"He has a way with words," I said before I could stop myself.

Tori smiled and I started on my hotdog.

"So you do like him!" Tori said as I took the first bite of hotdog.

I didn't want to continue on this topic, so I decided to change to subject.

"Where are the others?" Indeed Joe, Kevin and Brad were not here.

"They are using this lunch break to talk with their 'other' friends," she said then, "and don't change the subject!" Tori thought about it then said excitedly, "You should ask Victor if he wants to sit with us!" I was confused. "I thought you said he was a freak for sucking your finger yesterday." "Oh, well times change. Now shoo! Go and ask him," Tori shooed me away.

I left my lunch and walked outside to where a bunch of crush girls were walking back. In the centre where Victor was on his cool motorcycle. I was a little shy, but asked anyway.

"Uhh... Victor?"

He didn't look at me.

I started again, "I just wanted to know if you would like to sit with me... Well, my friend too, but you don't have to count her..." I fell silent as he looked at me.

"I can't," he said plainly.

My heart was broken but maybe he had a good reason for saying no.

"Uhh... why?" I asked.

He looked down.

"I have better things to do," he put his hands in his pockets and walked away.

My heart is officially broken into a million pieces, but I will not cry. I'm too tough for that. I slumped back to our table where Tori was waiting.

"What'd he say?" she asked anxiously.

I must of looked disappointed because she knew what the answer was. Her voice cooled down.

"What did he say to you?" Tori asked a little angry.

I finally stuttered, "He-he said he had b-better things to d-do."

Tori looked at me with concern again.

"Aww... It’s okay, Anny,"She comforted me.

I am so grateful the bell rang at that moment. I made my way to my next class that happened to be mathematics. Oh, great. Mr. 'I have better things to do' is sitting behind me. How am I going to take more disappointment? Today in class, Victor totally ignored me. He didn't talk to me or even touch my neck once. Victor is a very strange person. In the middle of class when Mr. Chang was distracted, I turned around and said,

"What's wrong with you!?" He didn't make eye contact, but I kept going. "You'd thinka girl couldn't take anymore disappointment!" By this time, I was yelling.

The whole class was staring at me.

"Any problems, Miss Acacia?" Mr. Chang asked.

I slid down in my seat, wanting to be invisible at this moment.

"No problems, sir," I said in a normal unsuspecting voice.

Good. Mr. Chang began teaching again. Okay, I guess I owe Victor an apology since he did save my ass in the beginning. Treating him like this, I can see why he is acting like such a jerk to me.

I turned around but Victor was really into math at the moment. I decided I would talk to him later, maybe on the walk home. The rest of the day, I wrote an apology on a piece of paper. I made sure that Mrs. Payne, the eleventh grade geography teacher whos suited her name, didn't see the note. She was the type to not only keep notes but to read them to the whole class. I didn't want the whole class to know I liked Victor so I hid the note whenever she came near me. When the last bell finally rang, I hurried to leave so I was in time to catch Victor. He was already in front of me but I ran to catch up with him.

"Go away!" he growled.

I was shocked but maybe he had a tough day. What am I thinking? I'm in all of his classes! I abided by his orders and went home, walking as he ran home. I remembered about the band practise and quickly stumbled home, grabbed the lyrics I had wrote the night before and my bassthenran to Tori's house.

It's not that far. Tori only livestwo blocks away from me so it's just a little bit of a run compared to the jog to school. I arrived at a small white brick house with light blue shutters and a bright red door. When I was younger, I thought Tori lived with vampires and they had painted the door with blood from their victims, but I know better now. I rang the bell and a woman that looked extremely like Tori, except for her piercing blue eyes, came out. This was Mrs. Mable, Tori's kind but strict mother.

"Hello, Anna. Victoria's in the garage with her other friends. I'll go and tell her you're here," her mother told me heading to the garage.

Mrs. Mable has always called me Anna. It is a little better than Anny but I still prefer Annabelle. Victoria is Tori's real name but she never really liked it. She didn't like the nickname 'Vicky' either so we just call her Tori. Anyway, Tori speeded to the front door, just before her mother could close the door on me.

"Mom, it's okay. Come in, Annabelle," she shouted.

Tori lead me to the garage which is considerably big for the size of her house. The band was all there; Joe was testinghis drums, Brad was tweaking his guitar and Kevin was plugging in his keyboard. I quickly handed the lyrics and notes to Tori and set up my bass. Tori read the lyrics over and over again. She looked at me in admiration.

"These are awesome, Anny!" she squealed, "You wrote a song about Victor."

Everyone stared at me. Oh, shoot.

"How do you know it's about Victor?" I growled at her as I started strumming the notes.

Tori, amused, said, "Why don't you sing it for us then?"

I grumbled, "Fine... But just the chorus..." I started to sing off tune, my bass was off tune as well.

And I just can't figure him out,

He's so mysterious.

And he leaves me no choice

But to guess.

Oh, I just can't figure him out,

He's so mysterious.

And he leaves me no choice

But to guess.

Everyone plugged their ears but Kevin clapped. I am no good at singing, but why is my base off tune?

"I'm with you on this one, Anny," he said jokingly, "It's about me, isn't it?" Kevin winked at me.

"You wish..." I responded back humiliated by my singing.

"Umm... Annabelle?" said Brad in his deep voice, "You don't look well. Leave the song to us and go home to rest."

Well, I guess I could use some rest. I said my goodbyes, grabbed my bassand walked back home. Halfway there, I remembered that I forgot my back pack. I turned back towards Tori's house. When I arrived, Mrs. Mable just let me in. I couldn't hear the band practising so I peaked in the garage door. Tori was telling the gang something.

"Okay. Tomorrow we start plan Vicabelle," she announced.

What was she talking about? I didn't even know if Victor even likes me!

"Is everyone with me?" Tori whispered.

Kevin joked, "Well you know how much I hate annoying the hell out of Anny but I guess I'll do it."

Tori looked annoyed. "This is serious Kevin!" she told him, "Is everyone with me?"

Joe spoke up, "Okay... It would be the ultimate joke." Brad said something next, "Of course.

Anything for Annabelle."

It's funny. Brad calls me Annabelle instead of Anny. I guess he's not a 'let's annoy the hell out of Anny' guy. I'm glad to have him as a friend.

Kevin yelled, "DUH!" ThenI left.

I decided that I would call Tori about my backpack later. Right now, I needed to get home before dark. I always feared walking home in the dark alone because I would be so vonerable to vampires. I ran home in silence, not looking back. Once I had opened my paint peeling white door, I ran to my bedroom and flopped on my bed. I had decided to call Tori right away, so she could run it over to me before dinner. Speaking of dinner, I needed to eat. Thespecialon tonight’s menu was Mac 'n' Cheese. I called Toriwhile the water boiled.

The phone rang two times before Tori's high voice said, "What's wrong?"

The caller I.D. had told her I was calling.

"Nothing... Why do you always assume something is wrong when I call?"

At this, Tori giggled, "Because something always is!"

"You're right... I forgot my backpack at your house. Do you think you could run it over?"

"With my dear old mother's car? I'd love to! Wait, where'd you leave it?" she asked.

"In the garage." I replied.

"Okay," She put the phone down.

I waited for a minute then heard her voice again.

"Be there in two," she hung up.

By 'two' she meant two minutes. I went back to making my dinner but Tori was there within next minute. She showed up by herself in her mom's new blue Toyota. Tori is such a rule breaker. If there's a newrule out there, she's broken it. This time, the rule was 'Don't drive without an adult in the new car'. You see, Tori hasn't gotten her license yet so she's a bit of a maniac on the road. I ran out to the car and grabbed my black backpack from her.

"Thanks," I muttered to her.

"You're welcome! Always happy to help you out, Anny!" she smiled then left, hitting the street lamp on the way out.

"Whoops!" she called into the night, "SORRY!"

“That girl is hopeless” I sighed.
