“It’s really stupid. Chuck’s mad at me for spending the day with Nate. He says it’s not ‘proper’ for me to be spending time with him by myself. I mean who does he think he is?” I asked fuming at the last part of it.
“Chuck Bass.” Jenny offered and it made complete since.
“Of course.” I said pointedly.
Jenny and I giggled and her presence put me at ease.
“Hey I’m racing this weekend are you going to be there?” I asked batting my eyelashes.
“Well I haven’t been invited.” She looked down at the ground sad.
“First of all no invitation is needed it’s a public event. But if you need to be invited… Jenny will you please come and see me race?” I flashed her a smile. Her face lit up in happiness and she threw her arms around me.
“Thank you so much!” She gushed. I patted her back laughing.
“You’re so welcome.” I said with equal enthusiasm. She realized that she was hugging me and quickly let go.
“I’m sorry.” She bit her lip fear in her eyes.
“No worries.” I assured her and she had the most grateful look on her face. It was heart warming.
The school day went by quickly. I avoided Chuck at lunch and Serena stayed faithfully by my side. She was asking me why I hadn’t told anyone that I was into racing. I was quick to remind her that street racing wasn’t exactly legal. A lot of the girls at school were looking at me differently, enviously. I overheard one girl saying that I was all her boyfriend could talk about. And that he couldn’t wait to meet me at the race on Saturday. That explains a lot. But these girls should no better. I was till with Chuck. Wasn’t I?
Derek was leaning up against my car waiting for me just as he said he would. His face was hard and anger filled his eyes. This could not be good. I gave Derek a cautious smile and waved. He didn’t return the smile and I grew anxious to know why. I hurried down the steps to him.
“Hey D-“ He cut me off putting his hand up in front of my face.
“You left this in the car.” He slammed my phone into my hand. “I read the newest Gossip Girl post.” He spat out the words Gossip Girl. ”Interesting blog isn’t it? You can find out the latest gossip about these Upper East Siders. Even about you and Chuck.” His voice matched his face, hard and angry.
“Yeah you can.” I silently cursed Gossip Girl and then myself for leaving the phone in the car.
“Well where is he?” Derek asked throwing his hands in the air.
“I don’t know I haven’t seen him since this morning.” I told him truthfully.
“Then find out.” He demanded.
“No.” I perked up some courage.
“Excuse me?” Derek was shocked.
“I’m not going to find out where Chuck is. You’ll only get yourself in trouble and I don’t want that to happen so no.” I explained to him. His eyes flashed in admiration and a small smile formed on his lips.
“You don’t think I can take him?” Derek asked surprised.
“Oh no I know you can take him. That’s the problem, he’s still only 17 your 19 its illegal for you to hit him Derek.” I spoke in a ‘duh’ tone of voice. He considered this for a moment.
“I don’t care. No one is allowed to hurt you.” His voice was stern. I stepped closer to him standing my ground.
“I said NO! Now please get in the car.” I walked past him and slid into the passenger side. I saw him mumbling things to himself aloud as he crossed the front of the car and got in.
He speed off and turned the radio up. He obviously wasn’t in the mood to talk to me anymore. I listened to the music instead of his huffy breathing. To the world by Strike Anywhere was on and I turned it up louder to drown him out. I kept time with the music tapping my foot against the floorboard. Derek seemed to be calming down now and I was relieved. I got farther into the song bobbing my head and Derek looked over at me and laughed.
“Don’t laugh. I’m an awesome dancer.” I contradicted this by doing the swim. You know where you plug your nose and pull your hand down in a waving motion. We both busted out laughing.
I hoped that Derek would forget all about Chuck. I know that I had already begun to. Derek always made me so happy. He’s the best cousin I could ever ask for. More like a brother.
My mind traveled to this weekend and I pictured Jacob breaking down crying from his humiliating defeat! One more day.
