We.......-," I jumped as Rad's palm whipped out to smack the table where the fly that was destracting me had been.
"Cry," Rad pushed me on,wiping the remains of the fly on his pants. He said the word so easily, the ancient language coming naturally.
"Right. 'We Cry our Final Farewell to the light.
Our prey hide in it, as we hide from it.
Raise your arms to the pale moon.
The final farewell to life as we knew it.'"
I finished, the last note ending to join Rad's silence.I had been spending all day trying to learn the song of the Nite Clan. The melody was haunting, the words in the Old Language. It wasn't an easy thing to learn.
"Good. You should be ready by the time of the Danse," Rad stood up and went over to the window. He pulled back the heavy drapes a bit and looked outside, the sun coming in on his pale face. I squinted at the little bit of light, my eyes used to the dark of the mansion.
I fingered the bracelet on my wrist, running my fingers over the blood red stones set into the delicate silver. I had gotten it a few days ago, the sign that I was ready to join the outside world again. Not only that, but it would protect me from the sun's UV (don't ask me how), a vampire's only enemy.
"Why don't we go outside," Rad suggested, "It's time. Our flight is on Tuesday. That's only five days and you need to start getting used to being around humans again."
I shook my head slowly. "I don't think I'm ready."
"Tab seemed to think you were. Now you need to prove it to him. Prove it to yourself." He left the library, leaving me to mull it over in the light. I pushed myself up from the overstuffed chair and to the window Rad had gone to. I looked outside, I place I hadn't been or even seen for year. A year that I spent getting used to my new immortal body. In that time, Rad was my trainer, getting my sustenance and helping me build up the strength against temptation when among humans, and even training me in fighting against other immortals. There was no way to kill a vampire except with the sun, but if needed, a few limbs could be torn off to leave them unable to fight back.
I felt a little guilty that Rad had spent so much time helping me, and yet I never wanted to be in the position to use it. I was happy to let him bring blood when I needed it. I sighed went out to the front entryway outside the library. Rad sat on the floor , putting on his shoes. He looked up at me as I stood.
"You don't have shoes do you?"
"Nope." How lame is that? It had been so long since I had been outside that I didn't even have any shoes.
"I guess you'll have to wear one of the twin's. They have big shoes, but mine are bigger. You'd hardly be able to walk in them, because otherwise I'd let you."
"It's ok. Don't bother. I'll wait until we get shoes." I turned to go, but before I could even take a step, Rad stood up and in a single stride came over and took my arm.
"No you don't...you are going outside, whether you feel ready or not."
Still holding onto my arm, he went over to the closet and took out the least worn out pair of shoes. Just as he was about to hand them to me however, the twins pounded down the stairs and one of them, Reed I think, grabbed the shoes out of Rad's hand with a, "Hey, thanks man!" and bolted for the door.
"Stop," Rad ordered. The twins skidded to a stop, crashing into each other at the door. They regarded Rad, who held his hand out.
"What?" Reese, the other twin asked. Rad nodded towards the shoes.
"We need to borrow those," he said.
"No you don't, you have your own," Reed said, opening the door.
"But Eve doesn't." The eyes of both twins widened.
"She's coming outside? Good for you Eve. Come join the fun." Reed handed the shoes back to Rad and took another pair out of the closet. I sat down on the floor, and slid the shoes on. They were still huge, but I was able to tighten the laces enough so they wouldn't slide off. Finally, with much pushing and prodding from Rad and the twins, I went outside for the first time in over a year.
