Chapter 5
I woke up to the sun shining through your window. I groaned tried to sleep some more and heard a chuckle from beside my bed. I opened my eyes and saw Jerome.
-"Hey, sis? Feeling okay?"- he stroke my hair softly and smiled down at me.
-"I'm fine. What day is it?"- I looked around, as if there would be a sign showing what day it was. Jerome chuckled.
-"You have been seriously sick and when you wake up, you want to know what day it is and not what happened to you?"- he shook his head. -"It's Thursday. You've had a high fever. Do you remember that Edward brought you home and you passed out?"- How could I forget? He didn't want to be my friend anymore. It hurt, but I was fine without him before us two met, and I would be fine after I met him.
-"Shouldn't you be in Seattle?"- I decided to ignore his question. He raised an eyebrow but answered.
-"Yes, I was about to leave, but you know, Dad asked me to stay when you were sick, cause he had so much work, so he couldn't be home, actually."- Jerome murmured.
-"He wasn't home, when I was sick?"- Jerome didn't make eye contact with me.
-"He told me what to do, so no worries."- he shrugged.
-"I'm his daughter, he is a doctor, he's supposed to take care of me! Even if Mum was sick, she took care of me when I had a flu!"- I shouted and Jerome looked away from me. -"But thank you."- I smiled. He nodded.
-"Edward was here yesterday, checking on you. He was worried when you didn't wake up. Maybe you should call him?"- Jerome suggested and I shrugged. He gave me one last look before he left my room. Edward had been checking on me. What about not being friends? I was confused, really confused. That boy must have two personalities. Then I thought of the party this weekend. I had to go, I needed something to do, so I wouldn't be thinking of someone. I rolled of the bed and put some sweatpants and a T-shirt on and went downstairs.
-"Jerome!?"- I shouted.
-"Yeah?"- I heard his voice from the kitchen and went there to talk to him.
-"You're still up for Mike's party this weekend?"- I asked him anxiously. He looked at me with an empty expression. I raised an eyebrow and his face lit up in a grin.
-"Sure. If you want me to baby-sit you."- he chuckled and I 'haha':d, not thinking was funny. -"Did you call Edward?"-
-"Sure, I did."- I lied.
-"Will he and the other Cullens come by later?"- What to answer?
-"Uuh, I don't know. Depends on the homework."- I shrugged and he nodded, buying my lie. -"I probably will take a walk later."-
-"Evelyn, you've just been sick, don't think that's a good idea."- Jerome argued.
-"Well, I don't care if it's healthy or not."- I told him. He frowned.
-"Dad will kill me, if I let you go out."-
-"Well, I don't know why he would care if I go or out or not. He wasn't here when I was sick, so I don't see the problem with me going out taking in some fresh air in my lungs."- I babbled and Jerome made face and let it be.
I was walking in the park, where the two guys had hunted me. I listened to my I-pod, not thinking about anything when I suddenly felt watched. I squinted my eyes and looked around. There was no one. Weird. I continued my walking, but again I had that same weird feeling. I panicked and ran home. When I was on the verandah, I felt childish. I was becoming paranoid. I laughed at myself, but stopped when I noticed something I hadn't when I ran. A silver Volvo stood parked outside out house. I raised an eyebrow and hoped it was Emmett borrowing Edward's car. But could I have such luck? No.
When I came inside, the Cullens and Jerome were sitting on the couch, watching a movie. They turned around when I shut the door with a slam.
-"Hey."- they said and I just waved at them and went to the kitchen after a Cola. When I came back to the living room Jerome started talking with me.
-"Won't you come and watch the movie with us?"- he asked.
-"No, I don't think so."- I smiled and walked towards the stairs, but Jerome wouldn't let me go that easy.
-"Oh, come on! The Cullens are here to see you and you only go upstairs with a 'hi'?"- he stopped the movie and everyone turned to look at me. I raised an eyebrow. -"And you were just out walking and now you can't socialize with friends?"- I answered him with silence. They all frowned.
-"Sorry, I'm not in the mood for company... Maybe another day?"- I said and turned my back against them and went upstairs to my room. I wasn't alone for a long time before a knock on the door was heard.
-"Who is it?"- I sighed and looked up. Alice came in. -"Hey."- I smiled a small smile. She sat down on the bed beside me and watched me. -"What?"- I asked when she's been doing it for five minutes, not moving an inch, barely blinking.
-"I'm just checking how you're doing."- she answered.
-"Sorry about that downstairs. As I said, I'm not in the mood to socialize. I just rose from the bed after being sick."- And having no Dad at home, watching over me. I sighed when I thought of it. Maybe he would be home soon?
-"Is something bothering you?"- Alice asked a bit concerned. I shook my head and tried to smile assuringly, but I probably failed, because she frowned, but didn't say anything. -"Well, I'll probably see you at school tomorrow then?"- she asked, but she smiled knowingly. I raised an eyebrow, suspiciously, and the smile quickly disappeared.
-"Yes, you will, if Fred doesn't make me stay at home. If he even comes home.."- I mumbled the last part for myself, but I had the feeling, that Alice heard it too, because I saw her frown, but she was good at hiding it. She then stood up said 'bye' and walked out of my room and soon I heard a car leave. I sighed and lied down. I fell asleep.
I was shaken awake next morning and I saw Jerome watching me.
-"Ready for school, sis?"- he asked and I groaned, pushing him away. He left the room and I changed into some comfy clothes. I took my bag and went downstairs to see that Jerome had prepared breakfast. I raised an eyebrow suspiciously and looked at him and he smiled.
-"Are you trying something here?"- I asked and he shook his head.
-"No.. Can't I take care of my sis?"-
-"Okay, what are you up to?"- He sighed unhappily and gave me a look, which made me smile.
-"Yes, I'm up to something. I want you to be nice to the Cullens today. Alice didn't look happy when she came downstairs and Edward was unhappy, but trying to hide, (which he did quite good) when you didn't come and sit with us. So, if they're talking to you today, so be nice, hey?"- he said, looking me in the eye. I was silent for a moment, but then nodded.
-"I'll try."- I mumbled and began eating. Soon after I drove to school, only to see my friends standing outside in the light sunlight. I stepped out of the car and they saw me and smiled.
-"Hey, Evelyn! You are well enough to be here again!"- Mike said. We'll see about that later, mate.
-"Yes, I don't know what hit me, but I feel fine. I was taking a stroll yesterday."-
-"Was it Edward Cullen's car outside your house yesterday? I thought I would stop by, but saw a car, a silver Volvo."- Angela asked.
-"Yes, all the Cullens were at our place yesterday, you know, the children. They were watching a movie with Jerome. They've become really good friends."- I smiled and began walking inside and the others followed me.
I didn't meet the Cullens until lunch. I was sitting with my friends, chatting and laughing, when I felt eyes on me. I glanced towards the Cullen table and saw them watching me. Alice waved for me to come over to them. I frowned and excused me and went over to them. Alice pulled out a chair and told me to sit down. I obeyed.
-"How are you doing today?"- she asked. I smiled.
-"Much better than yesterday."- I shrugged. They smiled at me.
-"So what are you and Jerome doing today?"- Emmett asked. He and Jerome had become really good friends.
-"Uuh.. I don't know. I probably do my homework and then watch a movie."- I shrugged, once again. I felt Edward's gaze on me and I looked down at my feet.
-"Are you up for a game, football? I think it's going to be a good weather."- Alice asked. -"And Jerome could always come. He was the one suggesting it yesterday."- How could O say no?
-"Sure. I tell him."- I said, still looking at my feet.
-"Everything's alright?"- he asked. I nodded and looked up with a fake smile on my lips.
-"Sure."- Liar. I could see he thought it.
-"Well, see you at 7 p.m. at the same place as last time we played."- Alice said.
-"Oh, is Evelyn playing games with her friends?"- Ugh! Jason was leaning down, talking to my ear. -"Why don't you come and play games with me, hun?"- he whispered, but I saw the expressions on the Cullens' faces that they've heard.
-"I only play with my friends, darling."- I smiled bitterly and he left.
-"He must have a crush on you."- Emmett said and I watched him, a bit in shock.
-"Why?"- A quick glance at Edward. He was looking away.
-"He's pestering you more than anyone. I feel sorry for you."- Emmett grinned. I stuck my tongue out and the bell rang. I sighed. Back to class.
