Sam sighed as she walked off the platform and glared at the dark sky. The Doctor stood over her and held his coat over them like an umbrella.
“Why is it that every time I visit I get soaked with rain?” Sam was grumbling as they walked to a taxi. “Seriously the last time I visited them I had to walk there and let me tell you that I was running a fever for two whole days after that.” The Doctor looked at her with his eyebrows raised. “Never mind.” She waved her hand and the cab driver took off.
“Where to miss?” He asked as Sam fumbled with a piece of paper. She handed the paper to the cabbie and he drove off. Sam shook her head and looked at a lock of hair to notice that it appeared black. When they drove up to the side walk Sam noticed that they had gone the wrong way.
“Uh, sir we are going the wrong way.” Sam said looking at the Doctor with suspicion in her eyes.
“No this is just a short cut.” The Cabbie said to Sam as she fumbled with the seat belt.
“Where are you taking us sir?” She asked as she pulled out her sonic screwdriver; she never expected that she would actually have to use it. After her seat belt came undone she made quick use and undid the Doctor’s.
“My cover’s blown…shit.” He said looking back at her and grinning. She shuddered as she remembered his face. He was the one that she had been pursuing when she met James. “Oh well my mistress will still take you either way.” She kicked the window on her side of the car and jumped out. The Doctor opened the door and fell to the ground. She struggled to stand up as the car came to a screeching halt and turned around.
“Doctor help me!” She screamed as she crawled over to the sidewalk. The Doctor grabbed her shoulder and pulled her up to her feet. Her duffle bag hung loosely on her shoulder and she looked at her hands; they were shaking.
“RUN!” He shouted at her as he started to run. She followed as quickly as she could but found that her leg was sore. The rain poured down and stung her face. The cabbie drove up to her and she noticed that the Doctor was well over 20 feet ahead of her.
“Give me the Master’s Star girl or I will shoot him.” Sam reached behind her and saw the Doctor spin around to look at her.
“Sam,” She couldn’t hear him but she saw his mouth move, she knew that he was whispering.
“I don’t have it asshole.” She shot him with her stun gun and started to run up to the Doctor and fell to the ground at his feet. She was tired and sore. The Doctor helped her stand up and pulled her arm over his shoulders. “I really don’t have it…ow my legs.” She looked at the Doctor’s torn up pants and noticed that his knees were a little bit bloody.
“I’m fine, don’t worry about me just yet…you’re more important right now.” The rain let up a little but it was still pouring on them. Sam shivered and looked back at the ground. They were almost to Sarah Jane’s place just a few more city blocks and then they would be able to relax and get her legs patched up, not to mention his.
Sam knocked on the door and smiled as a man in his late 20’s opened the door. “Hello is Sarah Janes Smith here?” She asked as The Doctor grabbed her duffle bag off her shoulder.
“Sam’s here mum.” The young man said as he helped her into the house. The Doctor followed closely behind them and shut the door. “What happened to you, you look terrible?”
“Nice to see you too Luke, we had to escape some crazy cabbie.” Sam laughed softly as Sarah came down the stairs and smiled. “Sarah…sorry to come so unexpected but I need a vacation from Torchwood and the crazies that want to kill me.” Sarah hugged Sam and looked at the Doctor.
“Good to see you Doctor,” Sarah said as Sam stood out of the way and walked up the stairs. “Sorry but I have only one spare room for some time.” Sarah looked over to Sam. Sam sighed and walked back down the stairs.
“I’ll take the couch then…not a biggy.” Sam walked over to the couch and then noticed that her clothes were soaked with both blood and water. “Damn, got a working shower?” Sarah laughed and pointed up the stairs.
After her shower she pulled on some clean clothes and rushed down the stairs and over heard Sarah and the Doctor talking.
“So she is a Time Lord,” Sarah seemed to be not so surprised.
“Yes,” The Doctor replied.
“I figured as much, after all K-9 kept saying she was.” Sam grimaced as Luke walked past her and stopped.
“Sam?” He asked as she motioned for him to be quiet. Then she closed her eyes knowing that it was a futile effort. The Doctor walked up to her and crossed his arms over his chest; she was in deep trouble for eavesdropping. Luke bit his lip and walked into the kitchen.
“I’ll just go to my room now.” She said pointing up the stairs and shivering. The hot shower didn’t help the shivers from the cold rain. The Doctor grabbed hold of her shoulder and steered her towards the couch. “Ow, ow, would you stop pinching my shoulder!” The Doctor let her go and she slumped onto the couch. “If you are going to scold me about eavesdropping forget it…” Sarah chuckled softly and sat on the floor; rolled up Sam’s pant legs and looked at the scrapes on her knees.
“Doctor you better take a look at this.” Sarah pointed to the scrapes and Sam looked down as the Doctor knelt next to Sarah. “They are healing faster than even you can heal.” Sam stood up and walked into the kitchen; she really didn’t want to listen to the next few words that were going to be said because they would have made her feel more like a freak than she already did. Luke looked at her and held out a cup of tea. She took it and drank it dry in one gulp.
“How did you cope with the fact that you were way different from everyone else?” She asked him and he just smiled.
“I didn’t mind it; then again I didn’t understand it.” He said and she grew a little annoyed. He was always vague with her on some subjects. Sarah walked in with an annoyed look on her face.
“Disarm,” She said to Sam. Sam looked at the ceiling and let her shoulders droop. “You know protocol in my house Sam…no weapons.” Sam nodded her head and pulled out the P 90. As she handed it over to Sarah; Sarah gave her a look that was similar to ‘you’ve got more now hand them over,’ Sam motioned for her to wait a second when the Doctor walked in. Sam bent backwards and pulled out a gun from her back strap. As she opened her mouth she remembered that she would need a privet room to remove the rest of the weapons.
“Can I go to my room to-”
“No right here, now.” Sarah interrupted and pressed her lips together. Sam sighed and removed her shirt and pulled the dagger in her sports bra out and the Tanto that was tied to her ribs.
“Happy now?” She glared at Sarah and quickly pulled her shirt back one. Sarah did not seem happier. “Damn it…” She untied the back strap and every other strap that had been on her torso and watched all her knives fall to the ground.
“Done yet?” The Doctor asked as she held up a finger to her lips. He looked a little embarrassed by the fact that he had seen her without her top.
“I think so…wait a minute…” She looked over at Luke and motioned for him to leave the kitchen. She still had a one more weapon on her. She quickly pulled down her pants and removed the last knife from a leg wrap that was on her upper thigh. She then pulled up her pants and looked at the Doctor and smiled weakly. “Now I am, there you go Sarah, hope you are happy that you have just disarmed a wanted woman.” She kicked all the weapons on the ground towards Sarah and walked up the stairs to the spare room. The door slammed behind her and Sarah winced.
“Is she always like this?" The Doctor asked as he and Sarah walked back into the living room.
“No, she usually is better, but…” Sarah stopped talking and looked at the photographs on the walls. “But if she is a wanted Time Lord by the Daleks then she has every right to be a little testy with people.” Sarah looked at the Doctor and sighed; Sam was in and out of her right mind since James had died. Luke walked in and was holding Sam’s entire weapon’s collection in a large bag.
“What should I do with this mum?” Luke asked.
“Take them to K-9; tell him to guard them from her.” Sarah said to Luke. Luke walked up the stairs. The Doctor looked at Sarah as she sat down. “She isn’t all that into fighting but she likes to have the weapons just in case.”
“Really I would never have noticed?” Sarah laughed and looked up the stairs.
“She used a stun gun while you were around correct…she never goes anywhere without it. In truth she still has one weapon that I allow her to keep on her…Corrino, her stun gun.” Sam looked down the stairs and smiled evilly, Sarah always knew that she had one last weapon up her sleeve.
“I’ll stay on the couch if you want.” The Doctor offered as she sat on the stairs.
“Nah, I’ll be fine down here for the duration…how ever long that may be.” Sam smiled as she picked at her leg. “How long do you think it will take until they stop looking for me?”
“Did you give them my address?” Sam shook her head and held out the piece of paper that she had given the Cabbie. “Interesting, you were willing to walk 4 miles out in the rain and just to avoid me being killed.” Sam smirked as she looked at the Doctor whom appeared astonished and bewildered. She had risked their lives just to save Sarah’s and Luke from suffering.
“Then they will not find you for a long while,” Luke said walking down past Sam. Sam moved so that he could sit next to her; as he did Sam almost saw a hint of jealousy in the Doctor’s eyes. “Unless of course you could think of someone who would know where you would go?”
“John Hart…Davros…um…” Sam paused as she thought of anyone else who knew who she would hide with.
“Don’t blow your brain trying to think.” Luke said mockingly as he rubbed her back. The Doctor stood up and walked into the kitchen. Sarah let her shoulders droop and followed him. “What was that about?”
“I.D.K, let’s find out…shhh.” She stood against the wall and listened into what Sarah and the Doctor were talking about. Luke stood next to her and raised an eyebrow.
“Doctor why did you just get up and leave?” Sarah asked.
“It’s hard to explain,” He replied. Sam could just see in her mind his face contorted and Sarah glaring at him.
“You love her already don’t you?”
“It’s complicated…very complicated.” He started to pace back and forth.
“Only if you make it complicated…would you stop that.” The Doctor stopped pacing and Sarah sighed. “How long have you known her?”
“2 maybe 3 days now, I lost track of how long when I saw her retcon Donna.”
“Oh dear…that does complicate things.” Sam covered her mouth and bit her tongue to keep from speaking. “You might as well come out Luke.” Luke stepped into the kitchen and made sure that Sam had enough time to make it back to the stairs. She sat down and strained her ears as best as she could to eavesdrop some more.
“Is that why you were acting a little strangely for the few seconds that I was sitting next to Sam?” Luke asked as he sat down on a chair.
“It’s complicated Luke,” Sarah replied for the Doctor.
“Why?”
“Because I-we imprinted upon each other…it’s hard to recognize but it’s there and it has never happened to a Time Lord before let alone two.” Sam didn’t understand what imprinting was nor did Luke, but if he asked what it was then Sam knew that something was going to happen to make her snap.
“Ok, so you two are stuck together until one of you dies…am I close?” Sarah had spoken before Luke.
“In a way yes, like I said; complicated.” He walked over to the stairs and looked at her as she twiddled her thumbs.
“Are we done trying to be secretive?” Sam asked as she stood up. She was annoyed that no one trusted her with the truth and kept everything from her until they felt necessary for her to know. The Doctor opened and closed his mouth; he could tell that she was angry and that she was going to win any argument that they had at this point.
“How much did you hear?” He finally asked as he looked at the ground.
“Hear of what, I have no clue what you are talking about.” She walked past him and over to the couch. “After all you were in the kitchen talking.” She lay on the couch staring at the ceiling as everyone else headed for their rooms. Sarah passed by and handed her a blanket.
“You should be a little nicer to him; he did save your life back there.” Sarah said as Sam rolled onto her side to face Sarah better.
“And he should be grateful that I didn’t kill him for kissing me, I would have if…” Her voice fell silent and she knew that she really didn’t mean what she was saying. Sarah smirked and walked to her room. “I would have if he weren’t so attractive…damn hormones and damn my brain.” She hit her forehead and started to shiver; it was cold to her down on the couch. She knew that it had to be the fact that she was out in the freezing rain a lot that day. She finally gave up on sleeping on the couch; she figured that the Doctor would not mind sharing a bed for one night. Slowly she crept up the stairs and entered the guest room. The light was on and he was sitting upright on the bed reading a book. She coughed once to get his attention. He stood up with the book on the bed.
