Dangerous Beauty
Chapter 9 : Dangerous Beauty {characters}
Just to clarify things. Thanks for reading!
Characters
I’ve given a brief description of some of the major characters in the story. I didn’t add pictures because I want people to imagine what they look like on their own.
Chandra:
Chandra is sixteen years old, and slightly immature. She’s eager to win approval and acceptance, and struggles with a deep rooted insecurity. She’s a dynamic character who matures when faced with struggle, and, most importantly, love. I chose to write from her point of view because unlike the others, she is completely without ulterior motive. She’s capable of both selfishness and selflessness, and has no ego to cloud her judgment. I also love that she’s average. Unlike her friends, she has no resources to back her up. Everything she achieves is a product of her own ingenuity. She’s prettier than she thinks, but isn’t beautiful, as her cousins are.
Cornelia:
Chandra’s cousin, Cornelia, isn’t as politically minded as she appears. She’s taken her upbringing to heart and believes in survival at any cost. Watching the rebels, she’s decided the only way to survive is to climb the social ladder. She wants Chandra to fit in, but cares about her deeply and thinks of her as a friend. She’s nineteen years old and, as Chandra described, very beautiful.
Dawn:
Dawn comes off as being guileless and kind, but in fact, she’s a master at manipulation. She’s much more than she seems, and lives a double life that will be revealed later. Despite her cutthroat antics, she genuinely cares for the people in her life. She’s old for her age, and can be relied upon to do anything necessary to achieve a goal. She’s proud and determined, and never fights for a cause any lower or less noble than what is absolutely right. She’s seventeen, with ragged brown hair and grey eyes. She has the potential to be pretty, but isn’t given much opportunity to develop that.
Cathy:
Catherine, or Cathy, isn’t nearly as perfect as Chandra sees her. She doesn’t have a big role in the story, but what she represents is important. She embodies confidence, satisfaction, and belonging; the three things that Chandra wants most. She’s eighteen and pretty.
Malikai:
More will be said about this character later. He comes from a difficult background, but his dark past makes him all the more determined to believe that the world is, and can be, a good and hopeful place. His loyalty is absolute and unwavering; when someone loves him, he can’t help but feel worshipfully grateful. This stems from severe insecurity and inferiority issues. His major flaw is his tendency to go on major power trips when he wants to control a situation. He’s very good looking, and has a naturally needy looking face. He’s seventeen, with very dark hair and eyes.
William:
William, like Cornelia, has been brought up in a world of politics and power. He’s naïve and optimistic. He’s led something of a charmed life, and has developed an ego from the easy way that people love and respect him. His parents are interested in the world outside the Island, so he’s broad minded and rarely buys stereotypes generally accepted prejudice. He’s eighteen and relatively good looking.
Jason:
This character comes off as the villain. Saying too much about him would give important details away, but it should be noted that he’s from the mainland and his actions are fueled by a combination of selfishness and ignorance, rather than malice. He’s eighteen, but probably the least mature character.
