“Which side do you want?” I sighed reaching for my crutches to guide me to where I would soon inhabit, throwing him back his pillow.
“You can come in on this side; I don’t want you to overwork that leg”
“wait, no. I’ll take the other side” I said remembering the broken ribs on this side of his body “I’m not an old lady, it’s impossible for me to overwork a leg that right now, I’m not even using” I replied making my way to the other side of the bed. “Ok, are you ready for me?” I asked as he hurriedly pulled the sheets back, making a space big enough to hold my frame.
“Always” he grinned, almost excitedly while I sat on the edge of the bed leaning my crutches against the wall. In my quest for a comfortable position I failed to notice the arm snaked around my waist, binding me to the bed; and more notably Brendon.
“Oh my God, you’re such a loser” I laughed once it caught my attention.
“What? Is it so wrong to make sure you don’t further injure yourself? In a sense, I love you; am I not allowed to care?” he laughed back while I rested my head on his shoulder, being as there was nowhere else to put it.
“Are you comfortable? I’m not hurting you am I?” I asked I felt like I was imposing on him, even if it was his idea; he’d probably take the pain just to make sure I was comfortable. I’m such a greedy bitch.
“Between you and the morphine, I’ve never been more comfy in my life” he reassured, shooting me his legendary smile.
“You have to be careful with that thing” I warned hitting his chest playfully “I might get lost in there.”
“What, my smile?” I nodded “How do you get lost in a smile?” he laughed
“How do you manage to angle a car so that I get out with a broken leg, and you end up in a coma? There are some things that we’ll never know” I replied relying on my wit to pry his attention from my regretful previous comment.
“Well, I’ll let you in on a little secret” I leaned in a little instinctively, he leaned against my ear; playing along with my juvenile tactics to get what I could out of him. He didn’t realize that it was more out of desperation, the missing piece to put the haunting puzzle in my head to rest. “I may have done that on purpose” he whispered tickling my passion with his hot breath, and irresistible delivery. I tried to hide my shiver, but he must have noticed because he pulled the blankets over me a little tighter.
“Why would you do that?” I asked incredulously
“I would much rather I get hurt than you” he reasoned
“That’s stupid, don’t protect me at your expense; it’s a wasted sacrifice” I resolved
“Nothing with you is wasted, except for maybe chances” Brendon being his sweet self, tried to convince me of a non-existent self worth
“When are you gonna learn, I am a waste; you’re just sweet” I responded, leaving a light kiss on his cheek, he had some facial hair threatening his smooth skin poking at my lips; only furthering my desire for more
“when are you gonna learn that I’m an ass, I just care abut you?”
“go to sleep Brendon, your parents always show up at about noon; I don’t want you to sleep through their visit. They miss those brown eyes of yours” I whispered, trying to ease him away from our conversation and towards the rest he seemed to need.
He sighed, seeing through my intent. “Alright” he kissed the top of my head “Goodnight beautiful.” I scoffed thinking it was a joke.
“Goodnight Brendon, I think tomorrow I’m gonna talk to them about your pain meds” I said muffling my voice with his shoulder. He laughed lightly.
“I wish you could see yourself the way I see you, it would make my life a lot easier” he continued laughing, scrambling my puzzle even more with every softly spoken word. “sweet dreams love” he said with fastened eyes “in a sense” he added peaking through his left eye.
“Sweet dreams Bren” I whispered against his neck; stifling a laugh at the rising sheets at Brendon’s hips which he was quick to cover, pulling my face against his neck to ensure that the sight didn’t reach my eyes. Oh, I would have fun with this. I started tracing patterns across his chest with my left hand, which slowly began to drive him crazy…too slowly. I decided things would work faster if I led my hand up to his hair to roam freely while my lips went to work blazing a trail from the base of his neck to his jaw line, slowly tracing nervousness into Brendon’s exterior as his breathing quickened, becoming irregular and out of sync with his rising heart rate. By the time a deep groan escaped him I was hovering over his lips “Are you sure I won’t give you nightmares?” I smirked taking in the desperation behind his eyes “I’m so gonna win this game” I chuckled leaving a quick kiss on his nose, taking my place at his neck once more, feigning sleep until I felt his pulse return to normal and his breathing to steady before nodding off myself. I was just about asleep when I heard a faint murmur against my forehead
“If only you knew” followed by a light kiss against my heavy head. Had my mind been under clearer pretense, I might have put the final piece inside of my puzzle; but overwhelmed by sleep I dismissed this as a dream.
