Confide

“I think this is a bad idea.” Yuki looked out over the ridge of the cliff she stood near with huge eyes and a sinking feeling in her stomach. They must have been a good two hundred or so feet up from the tallest tree. The horizon stretched out before her view majestically. The mountains she stared out at were the tallest in all the Land of Rice Patties. And, speaking of Rice Patties, she could see a few of them circling the base of the mountain.

“Why not? It’s perfectly safe.”

“… That’s what my friends told me when they made me go to summer camp with them. It’s on my list of top five worse experiences in my life.”

“Well, this isn’t a camp. All you’re going to do is jump down there. It’s no that hard. You’re a ninja, haven’t you done this before?”

“Yeah, but not from this high up. And, just for the record, unlike you my bones DO break.”

“Well, you could spend an extra hour going the long way around if you want, but I’m not going to wait for you.”

Yuki’s face went white. “Man, you really suck.” She stared straight down. “Alright, well…” She stepped back a little bit. “I can’t believe I’m doing this,” she whispered to herself. “This is stupid. You’re going to get yourself killed.” She took a moment of hesitation. “Better than being at that damn party,” she told herself with a nod.

Yuki ran forward, leaping off of the overhang. Kimimaro could hear her screaming something along the lines of “I’m going to die,” on the way down. When she landed, she was obviously fine. After all, he clearly heard the words, “I hate you,” echoing back up.

Yuki sat sulking on the tree she had landed on. The branch was bent and nearly destroyed from the impact of her legs, but Yuki was making it clear she had no intentions of moving. Kimimaro landed on the tree next to her lightly, making her look both foolish and unskilled. “Are you alright,” he smiled as he looked at her and the issue she was having at the moment.

“… Do I look alright to you?”

“Uh… You don’t want me to answer that, do you?”

“No, no I do not.”

Yuki’s pant leg had caught in the tree’s trunk. If she so much as left the branch, it was unlikely her britches would come with her.

“Can’t you… Move the tree or something.”

“I would do that if it wasn’t already dead.”

“… I see…”

“Yeah, I bet you do.”

“What was that supposed to mean?”

“… Just shut up and turn the other direction.”

Ai waved a hand in front of Tsuki. The two of them and Ai had gone in a different direction from Emi and Sana after the “fireworks” had ended. It would seem they were nothing more than a poorly-thought-out warning from a ninja or something of the likeness. Tsuki had been unusually silent and happy looking ever since they had left. Ai continued attempting to snap her friend out of the quiet.

“Well, I’m out of ideas.”

“Here,” Kisai said as she walked over with a grin of sadistic pleasure. “Let me try.” She bent down and whispered something in Tsuki’s ear. Ai raised an eyebrow.

Without warning, the once-quiet ninja erupted with laugher. The only thing audible coming out of her mouth was “democrat”.

Kisai was chuckling as well. She looked proud of herself, as she always did when she made Tsuki laugh at a random phrase.

Ai scoffed and felt around in her pack for something. To the dismay and disappointment of her comrades, Ai pulled out a book. There would be no talking to her now.

The pants problem solved and long since behind them, Yuki was trying very hard to stop feeling embarrassed about it. It wasn’t helping that Kimimaro was more than content to laugh at her about it.

“Maybe you should stay away from trees.”

“Maybe you should shut up.”

“What would you do if I did?”

“I’d be nice and quiet too.”

“Then who would you call for help when you get your jacket snagged on a branch?”

“Shut up.”

“Nope.”

“You know, when I saved you, I didn’t expect to get lip about my pants.”

“I didn’t think I’d have the opportunity to give it to you.”

“… Are you like this with Orochimaru?”

“No.”

“Then why with me?”

“You’re more fun to pick on.”

“How many people know you act this immature?”

“Just you. I don’t talk to anybody in Otogakure.”

“Should I be honored you talk to me, or offended you make fun of me when you do talk?”

“Whatever you want. Either way, you’re the one who chose to save me.”

“… You should stop talking before I regret it.”

“And my not talking brings us right back to you getting caught on dead trees.”

Yuki rolled her eyes in frustration. “Man, all of you men are trouble.”

“And you women are too sensitive.”

Yuki raised her brows and glared at him. Kimimaro, only just realizing what he had said, instantly shut up. He nervously met her gaze, and it would seem that her eyes alone made his lips seal themselves shut. How did girls do that!?

They kept bounding through the trees until before them was a dirt road. The forest fell away, revealing a massive field of rice patties. It would make sense, seeing as they were in the Land of Rice Patties, now wouldn’t it?

The two landed gracefully on the dirt. Well, graceful might be a little too strong in Yuki’s case due to the fact the she wobbled a tad when she hit the earth. She had to skip to the side about four times before she stopped and caught her balance. Kimimaro had watched her the entire time. Still, even though he really waned to comment on it, he couldn’t. Yuki would surely stare a hole in his head if he said what he really, really wanted to say about her landing.

“… What?”

“Nothing…”

Yuki smiled. “Alright, I will be totally honest. I like it better when you make fun of me then when you’re quiet. And yes, I am aware I have the same level of grace as a drunken goose.”

Kimimaro started laughing right then and there. Yuki giggled back, quickly stopping herself and clapping both hands over her nose forcefully. Kimimaro stared at her with a worrying tone in his eye. “Is something wrong?”

Yuki shook her head a few times.

“Then, what are you doing?”

“Trying not to laugh,” she squeaked out through her hands.

“Why is that?”

Yuki’s face turned very bright red. It could possibly have been mistaken for a road flare. “Uh…Well… You see… I…”

“Are you going to tell me or not?”

“Uh… Well, occasionally when I laugh… I tend to… well… snort.”

Kimimaro tried desperately to hold a straight face. The edges of his mouth twitched rapidly. His eyes actually started to water. “R-really?”

Yuki hesitated, and then nodded very slowly. “Yes, and my friends have made it a habit to yell something whenever I do snort.”

“… What would that be?”

Yuki mumbled something it sounded a little like she was being attacked by a pillow.

“…What?”

She sighed and took the hands away from her mouth. Drawing in a very deep breath, she waited for what seemed like a very long time. Kimimaro lingered in wondering as Yuki held her breath. Without warning, she screamed at the top of her lungs. “YUKI SNORTED!!!!!”

Kimimaro fell over and rolled on the ground as he laughed uncontrollable. After a while, Yuki joined in giggling. The fits of laugher were made worse when Yuki really did snort. Nobody could yell out the phrase Yuki had started the giggle fits over due to chuckling too hard.

The Kaguya found it really nice to be around a person with a good sense of humor who was kind, somewhat calm, and caring. Thinking about the traits Yuki had snapped him out of the over-joy he was trapped in, getting to thinking about if there was anybody else he knew who could even qualify as caring other than her and Orochimaru. And, his master wasn’t exactly the calmest or most caring person. In but a few seconds, he went from happy to depressed.

Yuki stood over him, her innocent face filled with worry and wonder. “Hey, are you alright?”

Kimimaro stared up at her. “Yeah, I’m fine.” He pulled himself to his feet. “We should be going.”

Yuki followed behind her newfound friend as they walked casually past rice patties and over the road. The water glimmered gently, shining elegantly with the golden sunlight. The crops, however, were not in particularly good shape. It was well known that the year was warmer than most, but Yuki had no idea it was worse in the northern areas.

“The rice looks like it’s going to die.” She halted in the middle of the path, eyeing a chiefly dried out field.

“There was a drought earlier this month,” he answered simply, stopping as well so he could see what the girl was up to.

She looked down, face filled with disappointment. “The water comes from those mountains over there, doesn’t it?” She pointed off into the distance at a mountain peak in nearly an opposite direction of their destination. She observed Kimimaro nod. Her expression became even sadder. “That’s the Kidate Clan territory now. After the main family started to deteriorate, the mad struggle for recognition and power began. I heard a rumor that they dammed up a large portion of the river.” Yuki stared at the top on the tree line that made a barrier between the Land of Rice Patties, and the neighboring country. “They don’t think about consequences felt down this far.”

The boy exhaled deeply and looked at the rice plants. “You said you have a will over plants. Why not fix it?”

“It isn’t that simple,” she stated with a shake of her head. “It isn’t that I couldn’t do it. But, if I did, I’m worried that I might hurt somebody.”

“Hurt somebody?”

Yuki lowered her face from sight. “There have only been two instances since I left home where I had to use my power. Once was when I was escaping Deba. The other…” She raised her head back up. “The other time, I really hurt an innocent person.”

“Then, don’t help them.”

“That’s where I’m torn.”

Kimimaro looked at her in query. “Oh?”

She smiled a little. “There are two parts of my Nindo. The first is a vow to never cheat in battle. I made a promise to myself that I would never use emotions of others to my own advantage in a conflict.”

“And the second part?”

She looked at him, eyes now showing a little bit of happiness. “The second declares that the worse thing a person can do is to have the ability to help somebody in need, to see that need clearly and still choose to do nothing.”

He grinned back at her. “That’s pretty noble of you.”

Yuki rubbed the back of her head wearily. “Yeah, and I see a need here. That’s the problem.”

“Then stay true to your Nindo and help.”

She sighed and nodded. “Alright, but if I do something wrong, you better promise to snap me out of it. Deal?”

He hesitated then agreed. Yuki sucked in a gulp of air, striking her arms out ahead of her body with intense authority.

The plants began to weave their way higher and higher into the air, blossoming over with health and changing to a vigorous green. An elderly farmer watched in awe and amazement as the plant he was only just examining grew taller and thicker in all of an instant. The waters rippled calmly, as if the process was perfectly normal.

The Kaguya boy was quite surprised himself. His eyes widened as he viewed what had once been fields of dieing plants transform into thriving rice patties. He was about to congratulate Yuki on a job well done when he noticed something peculiar was happening. Her hands were quivering a little as she began to lose her footing. That, however, was not what was bothering him. Before his very eyes, Yuki’s hair was turning from blonde to green.

He ran over and shook her out of her trance-like state. She snapped back to life with a sharp jump. Yuki waved her arms around like mad as she fell over, completely unable to catch her balance. She began to get up, but staring at her reflection over the edge of the dirt and looking into the water, she spotted the problem. Yuki gasped and hopped back a few feet, grabbing her hair.

“Yuki, are you alright?”

She ran a few fingers across her cheeks and then counted to make sure all of her flanges were still in place. “I think so.” She hopped to her feet. “Well, I don’t feel any different.”

“… You look different though.”

She just inhaled and shrugged. “Hey, all power comes with its share of side effects. And so,” she started walking again. “I am now a green-headed plant lady who is going to get caught on camera if we don’t leave.”

He tilted his head to the side. “I don’t see any cameras.”

“No, but I see that,” she stated as she started running. Her index finger directed Kimimaro to an old farmer who was rushing out towards them. Initially, he thought she was overreacting. Was a little attention that bad? However, his mind set was forced to change when Yuki was at last out of his sight. For a bumbling teenager, she sure was fast. He had to catch up to her.

Tsuki was still filled with a joy brought on by the explosion of lights taking place the day before. She was practically skipping to the Deba Academy. That was when she noticed all of the Leaf Genin, and Shikamaru who had repeatedly complained about being on the mission because he was a Chunin, lined up by the academy’s doorway. The less than kind teacher mentioned earlier approached Tsuki with a malevolent frown etched into his wrinkled face.

“Where is the Kidate brat!?”

Tsuki flew backwards. “I-I don’t know sir!”

“This is the fifth day she’s missed school! It’s inexcusable! You’re her best friend Tsuki Torachi! I know you know where she is!”

“No, I really have no idea! I haven’t seen her in days!” Tsuki’s face was growing pale.

“FIND HER!!!” He screamed in her face, causing spit to fly out of his mouth and onto the frightened girl. “You have one hour before these Leaf Villagers leave, and we need all three of you bumbling morons to escort them out!”

“We already looked for Yuki! She wasn’t in the town, she went over the wall!” Tsuki, realizing the seriousness of what she had just said, clamped two hands over her mouth as her eyes grew wide. The sensei was changing into a furious monster.

“WHAAAAT!?!?” He shouted so loud that the entire academy was taken aback, attracting all attention to Tsuki. “WHY DIDN’T YOU SAY SOMETHING SOONER!? GET THE NINJA HUNTERS IN HERE, PRONTO!!!”

Before anything could be done, the scariest, meanest, and ugliest bunch of ninja from Deba were over the wall, on the search for Yuki.
