Chapter 3 : Chapter 3
I knew I should’ve just ran right then and there. Damien and Schyler seemed occupied by this guy. So they probably wouldn’t have time to run after me. But for some reason I stayed. A low threatening growl escaped from Schyler’s throat. The other guys smirk just got even wider.
“Leave now Dagger,” Schyler warned. “You know what’ll happen if you fight in front of humans.”
The other guy, none as Dagger, chuckled menacingly. “What’s wrong Schyler? Don’t tell me your actually afraid,” he sounded as though he were challenging Schyler.
For once Dagger looked my way, not that I wanted him to or anything like that. His eyes narrowed in what seemed to be confusion. He started to take a step toward me but Damien and Schyler quickly got in front of me.
“I was right,” Dagger said more to himself. “She is the one.”
Ok now I was completely confused. What the hell was he talking about? Now I was starting to get scared. Especially for the way Dagger was looking at me. Like he was mad. But not at me. More like, mad at himself. Then Dagger did something that really shocked me. He grew long black claws in the blink of an eye!
“Give me the Orix!” he growled.
Orix? What’s an Orix? For some strange reason I had a feeling he was talking about me. Schyler and Damien already seemed way ahead of me though. Of course.
“Take Ana and get her out of here,” Schyler whispered so only Damien and I could hear.
Damien frowned and reluctantly nodded. I didn’t have time to protest because Damien grabbed my hand and practically dragged me down the sidewalk. It was understandable though. Considering I was really there mentally. I was trying to process this all in my brain. We turned a corner and went straight down passing about ten more turns. Then we turned right and stopped. Damien rested his hands on his knees. Trying to calm his breathing.
“Who was that?” I asked.
Once he finally got his breathing under control he stood straight up and looked over at me. “That was Dagger. I would tell you more but you’ll have to ask Schyler. He would get mad without asking him first,” he said.
Of course I would have to ask Schyler. For some strange unknown reason I was beginning to worry about him. That other guy, Dagger, looked really strong. And what did Schyler mean by when he said that thing about not fighting in front of humans? I was really tempted into asking Damien about it but I figured he would just say “ask Schyler” or something along in those lines. My mind also started to wander to the thought of the whole Orix thing. That really caught my attention. Even though I have absolutely no idea what it is. So many thoughts where racing through my mind I didn’t even notice the person that came up to me until he spoke.
“Dagger didn’t fight me…but we did have an interesting talk,” Schyler had said to both of us.
I looked up at him curiously and he narrowed his eyes. Like he knew what I was going to ask. So he cut me off just as soon as I opened my mouth. “You can ask me when we get to where we’re going or when we rest,” he said.
They didn’t give me time to complain because they both started walking ahead of me. Wait a minute. They actually thought I would follow them. Well I guess they had a good reason to think that. A very good reason. If I went with them then I might be safe but if I stayed here then it was no telling what could happen to me. I could get kidnapped (again?) by some old drunk and having him do God knows what to me or that mysterious, evil, conniving, (not to mention very sexy…I cant believe I just said that!) guy that tried to take me. Who would I stand a better chance with? Schyler and Damien or Dagger? My gut was telling me to go with Schyler, my head was telling me to go with Dagger, and my heart was beating to loud for me to hear it. So going with my guy feeling, as usual, I went running after the boys.
Schyler looked like he was deep in thought. It made me curious as to what he was thinking about. He blinked like something was confusing him. Then he looked down at me and narrowed his eyes.
“What?” he growled.
I shook my head. “Nothing.”
He rolled his eyes and continued to walk on. Wow, could they get anymore boring!? I didn’t like when it was silent. It made my mind want to wander. Sometimes it wandered into places it shouldn’t be. Enough said.
We walked on for what seemed like forever. But it finally came to an end. Surprisingly. I still didn’t recognized the town. And they sky was a weird purplish blue color. Weird. Schyler had told us to wait outside. After about fifteen minutes he came back looking a little mad. Turns out that the guy they were supposed to meet was out in a meeting. So we would have to wait till tomorrow afternoon. Which was good in my case. I was tired and this was a good chance to get those answers out of Schyler.
We were staying in the same building. It was like an office building and a hotel in one. Good thing for the people that work here and live here I guess. The room was simple. Basically everything was almost entirely white! The walls, carpet, bed covers, beds, curtains, tables, chairs, lamp, night stand, pillows, counter, bathroom, shower curtain, everything! But it made everything look sort of…fluffy. Damien, as usual, went straight to the bed and laid down. Schyler was looking around like a lost puppy. His eyes darting from one place to another. It looked like he was trying to something, anything, to do to do so he could get out of answering my questions. Speaking of which.
“Hey, uh, Schyler. I think now you have a minute or two,” I said slyly as I sat down on the other bed that was next to the wall.
Schyler sighed in defeat as he sat down next to me but scooted away from a little. “What do you want to know?” he asked.
“A lot,” I started off saying. “First, what was with that guy? Dagger. How do you know him?”
Schyler rolled his eyes. “Basically, he’s my enemy,” he said but then saw my confused look and continued. “I‘ll explain later.”
“Huh ok,” It actually sounded like a question. “Next one. Why did he say humans when he was talking about a fight or something like that?”
“Obviously because we’re not human,” he said like it really was obvious.
I stared at him, shocked, for a moment. Then when my brain finally registered what he was saying my eyes got wide. “What do mean? What are you?”
Schyler smirked. “There’s a lot you don’t understand. Actually, you don’t need to know. At least not yet but I will spare your curiosity and tell you what I am. I’ll tell you what Damien is also.” He paused for a second. Letting the tension for me grow even stronger. “You may not believe me but frankly I don’t care. I’m an angel but not an ordinary one. I guess you could say a dark one. Damien is a fox demon.”
I just sat there like an idiot with my mouth hanging open. He could not be serious! That wasn’t true. Those sort of things only existed in fairy tales. Thankfully I finally managed to find my voice but what I said made me sound like a moron. “Your lying…” I shook my head and slid back away from him.
Schyler sighed angrily and rolled his eyes. “I wouldn’t lye about something like this. That other guy you saw, Dagger, he is my enemy. I’ve hated him since birth. He’s a werewolf.”
Ok so I decided to put him to the test. I had to find out if he was lying or not. “Show me your wings.”
He raised an eyebrow at me. Then his curious look turned into a menacing glare. “I don’t have to prove anything to someone like you,” he growled
I frowned at his answer somewhat sadly. Guess I wasn’t getting any answer. He was looking away now. Glaring at the ground. I wondered what made him so distant and cold all the time. As strange as it sounded though I could see sadness deep in his eyes. Deep down there in his icy covered heart there was a good person. Huh, or angel. I was about to lay down until I heard him sigh.
“Sorry,” he said, to my amazement. “I just get like that when people ask that.”
I thought about it for a while and it seemed to be a good excuse. I know I would get tired of people always nagging me. “How old are you?” I know it was a random question but I figured he wouldn’t get mad over something like that. I hope I was right.
He bit his lip and looked up at the ceiling like he was deep in thought. “I think I’m either twenty or twenty one in human years,” he replied.
“Human years?” I asked. “What about in angel years?”
He shrugged. “I have no idea. I lost count.”
I sighed and leaned against the bed frame. “What about Damien?”
“He’s the same age as me. I don’t know how old he is in demon years either and most likely if I don’t know he doesn’t know.”
Well so much for that. Then another question clicked in my brain and I cant believe I almost forgot to ask Schyler about it. “What’s the whole deal with the Orix thing?”
Schyler looked like he was caught off guard with that question because he looked up really fast and his eyes narrowed like he was thinking really hard. “You’ll find out about that later. Maxi will tell you.” That was all he told me. Which wasn’t anything helpful. “Now lets just go to bed. I’m tired.”
I nodded and got under the blankets. Schyler laid down to with his back turned to me. As soon as his head hit the pillow he was out. I could tell because of his steady breathing and his eyes were shut. Sadly I couldn’t get to sleep. I still wondered about the Orix and I had forgotten to ask Schyler why he and Dagger were enemies. My thoughts were eventually drowned in the sleep that over came me.
I hadn’t realized how tired I was until I fell asleep. I didn’t sleep for very long though. It was midnight when I woke up. Strange thing was, Damien wasn’t in his bed. He wasn’t in the bathroom either. The door to it was wide open. I gently got off the bed, so I wouldn’t wake Schyler even though I knew I should’ve, and went over to the window. I pulled the blinds back a little so I could peak out. Nothing. No one was around. It was dead silent, well, except for the fan, but other than that it wasn’t a sound outside. It was sort of creepy. I knew I really should’ve just woken Schyler but I wasn’t acting very bright at the moment.
That was when I saw a red blur in the corner of my eyes. When I turned to look it was no longer there. I just stayed there. Staring off into the darkness. Could it have been Damien? I don’t know. All I know is that whatever it was it scared me.
I quickly crawled back over into the bed but I accidentally kicked Schyler in the ribs during my rush. He coughed and quickly sat up.
“What the hell are you doing?” he asked in a groggy tired voice.
“Oh, huh, nothing. I was just looking out the window,” I said. I sighed knowing I had to tell Schyler. He would figuring it out one way or another. “Actually, I woke up because I couldn’t sleep and I noticed Damien wasn’t anywhere in the room. So I got up and looked out the window for a really long time. After a while I saw a red blur in the corner of my eyes but when I turned to look no one was there.”
It took him a while to register all this due to his tiredness. Then his eyes snapped open all the way. “What!?” he yelled as he jumped out of bed causing me to fall backwards.
He ran over to the door, jerked it open, and walked out. He was looking around frantically. After I recovered from the outburst I got up as well and walked out the door.
“What wrongs?” I asked him. It didn’t seem like he was paying any attention to me but he answered.
“Its nothing…” It sounding like he muttered something under his breath that I didn’t quiet catch. He was still looking around nervously.
I kept looking around to. Why would Damien run off in the middle of the night like this? Suddenly I got a very sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. It was that feeling you get when you knew something bad was going to happen. When I looked back up Schyler was wearing skateboard shoes, jeans, and a black t-shirt. How the hell did he changes so fast!?
Without looking at me he said, “go get changed and get your bag.” I didn’t argue with him. I wanted nothing more than to get out of there.
I ran back inside and quickly put on my jeans, a white t-shirt that had little skulls all over them, and my vans. I grabbed the bathroom stuff, shoved it into my bag, put it over my shoulders, and ran back outside with Schyler. He was still pacing while looking over the railing.
“Ok, lets go,” he said in a low whisper.
We started walking down the steps at a face but quiet pace. All this was really making me nervous. I looked up at Schyler to ask him something but stopped when I noticed something weird. His eyes were glowing silver! He noticed me staring and sighed.
“They glow like this so I can see in the dark,” he said.
“Is it like seeing in the daytime?”
“Not really. Its kind of like trying to watch an old TV that only has black and white. Except its kind of fuzzy.”
“Then how will you know where anyone is?”
Schyler didn’t seemed bothered by the questions. Which was a big surprise. “I can see their auras.” He glanced at me causing me to stop. “I guess I don’t need to go see Maxi after all.”
“What?”
“Your aura is like looking at the northern lights. Which means you really are the one.” Then he quickly added because he saw that I was about to ask, “Ask me later.”
“Ok, so if you see there auras then don’t you see a lot of people?” I asked after we started walking again.
“Well no. Its complicated. It takes a lot of concentration. People with different personalities have different auras. Like if someone was really evil than I’m guessing it would be black. I’ve always had my doubts about Damien. He’s actually really deceptive. One night when he was sleeping I concentrated really hard and saw that his aura was pure black. Good thing I was only using him.”
I wasn’t really surprised at what he was saying. It made since to me. “So Im guessing that someone with a pure heart will have a white aura?”
“Sort of. It would be white mixed with another color. Like if someone had a pure heart and they were passionate then it would be red a white. Yours has white in it too.”
I smiled at that. “What about yours?”
“I cant see my own aura.”
“Oh. Can anyone else do that?”
“I don’t know. I’ve never asked anyone and I’ve never seen anyone else do it.”
“But wait! Wont you run into other people when your using your sight thing?”
He started laughing. “First off, its called aura force. Next, no I don’t run into people. I can see other peoples outlines when I’m not focusing on their auras. I can also use it in the daytime to.”
By now we were carefully walking down the sidewalk away from the hotel. “Hold up. Does that mean that was how you were tracking me? By using your aura force?”
He smiled sadistically, which kind of scared me a little. “Yep!”
His smile vanished when we heard a low, but loud, growl behind us. Slowly we both turned around to come face to face with a very big, bigger than a horse, demon like fox. It’s jaws were clamped shut in a snarling growl. It’s fur was red. The color of blood. It had black claws, it’s tail was long, with fur sticking out at angels. The fur on the back of its neck stood up and his ears were really long. It was drooling a lot. I dared to look in it’s and when I did I let out a frightening gasp. His eyes were charcoal grey. It was Damien!
“Oh shit,” Schyler mumbled as Damien leapt forward baring his fangs and claws.
