“Molly?” The soft voice on the other side of the door took me by surprise. “Molly, baby, open the door.” I found myself immediately on my feet and pulling the door open. I stared at him with questioning eyes. He looked me up and down for a moment before frowning and quickly wrapping me up in his arms; letting me wrap my arms around his neck so tightly it should’ve choked him. A fresh wave of tears hit me then, and I cried into his shoulder as he rubbed my back, whispering comforting words in my hair.
“How?” I asked, pulling away slowly after I’d regained a little control over myself.
“Your mom called.” He said, pushing some hair out of my face. “She thought I’d be the only one who could get you to come out.” I looked down at the floor, still clinging to him.
“Oh.” Was all I could mumble.
“What happened?” He whispered, wiping tears from my cheek with his thumb.
“I don’t-“ I began but he cut me off by pressing two fingers to my mouth. He stared me in the eyes for a long moment before removing his fingers and replacing them with his lips.
“It’s me Molly.” Alex mumbled against my lips. “You can tell me.”
“We were so horrible.” I whispered, clutching at him tighter. “Lily, she just-“ I broke off in a sob.
“Shh, it’s okay.” Alex whispered, smoothing my hair with his hand.
“She just got so angry and then we were both yelling. I can’t believe what I said to her.” I was babbling. I doubt Alex even understood what I was saying.
“You got in a fight with Lily?” He asked. I had to fight my smile. Leave it to Alex to exceed my expectations. I nodded and he kissed my forehead. “Why?” He asked, meeting my gaze again.
“Because of you.” I whispered. So many different emotions passed over his face at that moment. The last one was determination. He pulled himself from my grip and turned to walk down the hallway. I grabbed his shoulder and pulled him to a stop.
“Where are you going?” I asked frantically.
“I’m going to talk to her. I don’t want to be the reason for you two to stop talking, you’ve always been friends, and I won’t come between that.” He said, turning again.
“It’s too late.” I said pulling him again. This time I walked around so I was standing in front of him. “It already happened.” I leaned into his chest, wrapping my arms around his waist. “I don’t want you to go.” I mumbled into his shirt.
“But, Molly-“ he persisted.
“I want you to stay.” I said, looking up at him. It took a couple minutes but the determination in his face disappeared and he softened. He wrapped his arms around me and kissed me.
I knew it wasn’t a mistake to have walked out on Lily when I did. She’d made her choice and I made mine. Hopefully, she’d come around, or I would, and we could find a way to work it out. But if that never happened, I’d always have that moment with Alex. That moment when I knew he wanted me more than anything, that he’d protect me from anything.
It hadn’t been a big deal for us, to say ‘I love you’. For some people that was the hardest part, but for us, it just happened. I don’t remember when it happened or who said it first, but it didn’t matter. It was true either way. That’s all that mattered in the end, really.
School was, without a doubt, torture. Alex wasn’t there to hold my hand and walk me through day. I felt so vulnerable as I walked down the hallways. Lily saw me and glared harder than I’d ever seen. She marched towards me and I was sure she was going to punch me. But, she just shoved my shoulder with hers and continued walking.
I saw Gianna but she seemed to want nothing to do with me. I found it funny that she was siding with Lily, considering Lily never really liked her and I had always defended her. It didn’t matter, but it did make me curious. Not only about that but also how this would affect Jack’s opinion of me. I never hung out with Jack much, but he was Alex’s best friend.
I avoided the cafeteria when it was time for lunch. Instead I went straight to where Zack and Lyndsay were sitting.
“How are you?” Lyndsay asked immediately as I sat down.
“Just short of miserable.” I sighed.
“It’s not worth it.” She told me, smiling sympathetically.
“I still don’t get what the big deal is.” Zack said, scrunching up his face. “I mean, so what? It’s not like she was dating him.”
“She wanted him too though.” I said. “I really hate this dating stuff. It always causes so much trouble.”
“You’re not going to break up with Alex are you?” Lyndsay asked, suddenly alarmed.
“What?”
“Oh god, please don’t, none of us will be able to stand it.” Zack said with wide eyes.
“Guys, chill. I’m not breaking up with Alex.” I laughed. “It’s just, I wish it was easier.”
“Oh yeah, there’s a practical wish.” Lyndsay said sarcastically.
“Or that girls were less mean.” I added.
“Ha, that’s even less likely.” Zack laughed. “Ow.” He yelled when Lyndsay hit him in the shoulder. “I didn’t mean you.” He pouted.
“Sure.” She rolled her eyes.
“Can I sit with you guys for the rest of the year?” I asked. “Or at least until this all blows over.”
“Of course.” Lyndsay told me with a wide smile.
“Your always welcome, you know that.” Zack said before taking a large bite of pizza.
“Ew.” Lyndsay and I both said at the same time.
“What?” he asked with his mouth full, sending little pieces of food across the table.
“I don’t know what I see in him.” Lyndsay said with a disgusted face on.
“Me either.” I laughed.
