The Slayer House fell silent when the three of us walked in through the door. Mother came up immediately. “Did you succeed?” she whispered.

“Er…no,” I whispered back.

Her face remained unexpressive as she ushered the three of us to the Main Office. I swallowed hard as we walked in. Max and Grace’s heads were hung low.

Father looked up as we entered. “Ah, there’s my champion Slayers—”

“Emmett, they did not succeed,” Mother said curtly, and Father’s face fell.

“What?” he asked quietly. “What did you say?”

I took a deep breath. “Father, it wasn’t Max and Grace’s fault. It was completely mine, I swear it. I—I underestimated the strength of the youngest Channing and he knocked me flat on the forest floor,” I said, wincing.

“Did he drink from you?” Father asked, glaring.

“Not a drop,” I promised.

“Hmm. I do not want you to suffer the fate of a failed Slayer, Aidyn, but we do have rules here. No missions for a month,” he said sternly.

“BUT—alright, I’ll take it,” I said grudgingly.

William Channing

I tore my lips disgustedly from the teenage girl’s neck. Everything—everyone—tasted awful. I needed Aidyn’s blood. I would die without it. There was only one other Vampire that had Imprinted on a Human, and that was Théoden Irneh. He was also the only Vampire to figure out how to age like a Human, and also how to appear any age he wanted to. But no one’s ever seen him since 1406.

I rested the girl’s head against the tree, closed up the wound, and left her. She would wake soon enough. Following the path, I came back to where Cecelia was drinking from a local man in the village. I waited patiently for her to finish.

“Was the girl to your liking?” she asked sarcastically, licking the extra blood from her lips.

“Pleasant enough,” I lied easily.

“Humph,” she muttered, and we met Thomas back at the tavern.

“I think we need to relocate,” he said quietly. “I feel people are getting suspicious. I felt it right after that Gallagher girl and her friends left.”

Cecelia sighed. “She ruined everything,” she said, pointedly at me.

I rolled my eyes. “Where should we go? I mean, we have nowhere to go. We could try Gondolia again,” I suggested.

“Way too bright for the likes of me,” Cecelia muttered. “How about Lennox? It had enough rain clouds to fill a mansion.”

“We could, if Thomas hadn’t left a trail of dead Royals in the wake,” I said grudgingly.

Thomas shrugged. “How about Renola? Not too dark, not to bright.”

“Good enough for me,” Cecelia said, scratching her chin.

“Fine,” I shrugged, agreeing with them.

To add to my punishment, I had to stay in Henri’s class to wash the windows and wax the floor every Saturday, which was the only free day at the House. Sunday we had church; it was believed that if we were inflicted with the Holy Spirit, it would make us less vulnerable to Vampires. Now I knew that was a load of crap.

Sighing, I leaned back on my bed. Grace said quietly, “Thanks for taking the brunt for me and Max.”

“It was my fault anyway,” I replied tonelessly.

“Do you miss him?” she whispered.

I didn’t answer right away. “It…I feel like an important part of me has been ripped away,” I murmured honestly. The piece was my heart.

Grace didn’t need to know that.

“Are you going to call him back sometime soon?” she asked apprehensively. “You know he can’t set foot on Slayer ground.”

“Can he not?” I asked. “Did you know that Vampire venom can heal? He did it to me. My dagger went into my skin that night and he healed it for me—without drinking my blood.”

“Hmm,” Grace murmured thoughtfully. “Are you saying I shouldn’t believe everything Professor Henri says?” she asked hopefully.

I laughed softly. “Yes, we can call him a liar.”

“Well, that’s one good thing about my friend falling in love with a Vampire,” she mused.

“Yeah, too bad there’s only one.”
