It was pretty late when the sun finally went below the horizon. Summer days, daylight hoursgettinglonger. Chase had gotten out a picnic basket and we had had dinner there. I have to say it was the most romantic thing ever! By the time we had finished our spaghetti dinner I was feeling like the luckiest girl in the world. I had themost beautiful, romanticboyfriend. And he loved me, nothing would take him away from me. After the peanut butter cookies (my favorite... and his =)) we headed back to the car. Chase had asked what summer camps I was going to. But I didn't know. For some odd reason my parents hadn't let me plan for any camps. He said he was going to an art school when I asked him. Chase loved to draw, and he was really good at it. He started the car and went back onto the highway, back to our neighborhood. I sighed. I didn't want it to be over.
"Something wrong," he said glancing over at me. I gave him a small smile.
"I just don't want the night to end," I said honestly. He put his arm around me and pulled me into his side while he drove.. responsibily! he was in the slow lane.
"It doesn't have to you know." And with those simple words my heart went back to being dangerously risking to my health with its frantic beating. Was he suggesting what I had been hoping? "Want to hang out at my house for a while," he suggested and my heart slowed down. But not completely.
"Yeah," I said snuggling into his side. "I do."
"Okay," he said softly and turned off the exit to our neighborhood. Driving by my house he pulled into the driveway of a long two-story brick house. My boyfriend's house was one of the most stunning in our neighborhood. Carved square granite steps lead up to his front door and he lead me up to it, his arm around my waist. Slipping the key in he opened the door and motioned for me to go in.
"Dad," Chase called stepping in after me.
"Chase," his dad called from the study. Out of the door to my left he came out. The only thing on Eric that resembled his son was his blue eyes, the red hair Chase had gotten from his mother. She had died in a car accident when he was only three. "Hello Tempess," he said. I smiled and said Hi back.
"Temp and I are going to hang out here for a while," Chase told his father.
"Fine," he said gruffly, and Chase started leading me up the stairs to his bedroom. Halfway up we stopped and turned as Eric started talking again. "Don't....do anything...without....you know," he said, then turned and ran back into the study. I blushed furiously, I knew what he was getting at however badly he pharsed it. Turning I raced up the stairs to hide my red cheeks from Chase, I heard him running behind me. When I reached his black and white room I sat down on his bed. It's my favorite thing in there. It's so soft, I love to run my fingers a long it. He sat down next to me and I turned my head away, afraid I was still a little red. Grabbing my chin gently he turned my head towards him, he was frowning.
"Are you mad at me?"
"NO," I said a little too loudly, and blushed again.
"Oh," he said remembering his dad's comment. "That." I nodded. "Hmm," he said pondering and I watched him as his eyes travelled his room. Getting up he went over to the little wood container that held all his movies. He picked one out and went over to the plasma screen tv facing his bed and put it in the dvd player. Turning out the lights he went back over and sat on the bed. Grabbing theremote he pressed play then leaned back against his pillow stretching out his legs as if he was going to sleep. I slid over next to him leaning against his other white fluffy pillow.
"What movie," did you pick I asked.
"You'll see," he said grinning and wrapped an arm around me. I leaned into his shoulder and we were silent through the commercials. When the movie played Never Been Kissed was written across the screen.
"How romantic," I said resting my head on his chest now instead of the pillow. He didn't answer but stroked my hair with the arm that wasn't wrapped around me. I got into the movie and was surprised when halfway through I heard Chase say something. Had he said....?
"What did you just say," I asked. He looked me in the eyes.
"I said I love you Tempess." I was stunned. Sure he had said Love you and stuff but he had never really put it so ... formally. I rolled off his chest so I was laying with my back to him, so I could think for a minute. He rolled onto his side too pressing himself against my back. His breath on my neck didn't really help me think straight.... "Temp," he asked andI heard fear in his voice. I turned again so I was facing him.
"I love you too Chase," I said. The words were so powerful they seemed to reverberate through the air. This simple statement was probably the truest thing I'd ever said. I loved him more than I'd ever loved anyone. In a different way than I'd loved anyone. I think I loved him more than life itself. He was my life. Slowly and tenderly I kissed him, placing my arms around his neck even though it was hard to do with his head against the pillow. The movie was totally forgotten now, he kissed me with reckless abandon. Minutes or seconds passed, I don't know I lost track of time. Suddenly the phone rang in his room. He let out an aggravated breath and Icursed it inmy mind for ruining the moment. Getting off of me....wait when did that happen? He went over to the phone and picked it up. Chase said Hello and then his expression became troubled.
"Yeah, sure I'll bring her right home." I frowned curious and confused.
"What is it?"
"That was your mother," he said turning to you. "She said she needs to talk with you, that it's really important. She sounded anxious Temp." I got up and went over to him. Well this just sucks, I thought. I wonder what she needed to talk to me about. Not thatI was worried I didn't think anything could turn the luck of my perfect life. As long as I had Chase that wouldn't change. "I'll drive you home," he said, I could tell he was just as dissappointed as I was. When we were in the car and heading towards my house I turned to face him.
"I'm sorry," I said sadly.
"Not your fault," he told me. "Call me tonight though okay?" I said I would.
"And next time," I said taking his hand. "We can start where we left off." He laughed and then parked the car. Darn we were already here. I got out and he walked me to my door.
"Night," he whispered giving me a sweet, lingering goodbye kiss.
"Sweet dreams," I said to him as he walked back towards the car. I watched him drive off and then pulled the key to my house from my purse. Opening the door I took off my shoes then ran into the kitchen. Riley was sitting on the table his head in his hands, staring blankly at the wall. My Mom sat next to him a hand on his shoulder for comfort and my Dad was pacing back and forth before the oak table. He stopped when he noticed me and my Mothernoticed me then too.
"Tempess," she said and the sound of her voice made my heart lurch. "Sit down honey." I walked over to the chair across from my brother and did as she said.
"What did you need to tell me," I asked just a little bit more concerned.
"I know this is going to be hard for you," my mother said beating around thebush. "But please try to understand." I raised my eyebrows and waited. "Your Grandfather has just died." I felt sad to learn of his death. But I had never really known him. Neither hadmy Dad (it was his step-dad) and none ofus were really close to him, not likewe were close with ourGrandmother. Still I didn't see what this had to do with anything. "You're Grandma Sarah is having a really hard time dealing with it. And she's fallen ill. She's in the hospital, Temper," she said, and worry hit me like an avalanche. My Grandma lived a long ways away from here. In a smaller town of Colorado.
"What kind of illness," I asked, and a tear slipped outmy mom's grey eyes before she answered.
"Cancer," she said. I didn't want to believe it.
"So that's it," I said my voice thick and i bit my tongue trying to keep from crying.
"No," she said and dread filled her face. "Too be closer to her...," she paused.
"What," I asked anxiously. Riley was the one to answer my question.
"We're moving," he said.
