Angeline's P.O.V.

"this is where we write on the walls, all the words we wanted to say" The Fastest Kids Alive

There is something to be said for southern boys. Like the one sitting across from me right now. There is so much to be said for him, or moaned given the right opportunity. Donna had introduced us. Of course when she’d told me about her friend Josh, I had assumed he’d be, well, fat with glasses and a star wars t-shirt. She obviously hadn’t gone into much detail. He had to be the most attractive male I’d ever seen in all my life. He hadn’t said much, but enough to make me swoon. “The virgin club is looking at you.” Donna told him.
“The virgin club?” I asked as he glanced over and shook his head.
“It’s a joke.” Josh told me.
“Because there is no way they could possibly be virgins.” Donna explained. “Another thing we didn’t start.” She added, but smiled as if she won a gold medal in the Olympics. I looked over at the table I knew they were referring to. Jersey Lee was whispering in harsh tones to her two friends, Jill and Carrie. I’d heard a lot about them since I’d gotten here. It’s weird how much people like to talk about them.
“You guys really don’t like them.” I stated looking back at Donna.
“What’s there to like?” She scoffed. “They’ve never done anything to deserve my good favor.”
I looked over at Josh to get his explanation but he was looking away, distracted by something that he obviously felt demanded his full attention. I followed his gaze towards Jersey Lee, who was staring back like a deer in the headlights. She looked as if she was in pain when she finally turned away. I looked at Josh who blinked and then looked back at Donna and me as if nothing had occurred.
“Is there a specific reason?” I asked looking between them. “That you hate them?” I added, focusing on Josh.
“Carrie is a viper.” Donna spat. “She’s always been mean, ever since we were kids.”
“You’re just mad because she beat you up for five years.” Josh laughed.
“That was not fun.” Donna mumbled. “And then there’s Jill. She’s a freaking gossip lunatic. She twists stories better than any one I’ve ever met.”
“It’s not a picnic to be on the wrong end of that particular talent.” Josh agreed, grimacing.
“Have you ever been?” I asked both of them, but mostly Josh.
“We both have.” Josh said, raising an eyebrow at me. Obviously he’d noticed that I was focusing more on him with my questions. I guess I wasn’t as subtle as I thought I was.
“What was the gossip?” I asked, even more interested than before.
“Nothing important.” Donna quickly blew it off. Josh smirked at her and shook his head. I had to smile. He was just too cute for words.
“Josh, it seems that Donna has all the reason for hating ‘The Virgin Club’.” I said using air quotes. “Why don’t you like them?”
“Peer Pressure.” He told me, smiling widely. He laughed when Donna kicked him under the table. When I looked at her I caught a weird expression on her face; sympathy I think, but I couldn’t be sure. It disappeared so quickly I couldn’t really be sure it was even there.
At the very end of the day I found myself in English, sitting behind Donna. Of course, I had to gape at the irony of who else was in the class. Jill Hill was in a seat by the window, starring out at nothing with a slightly sad expression on her little face. Carrie Fleet was a few seats ahead of me, casually texting underneath her desk. Josh sat two seats away from me and was focused intently on the book in front of him. Sitting between us, like the elephant in the room, was Jersey Lee Stanton.
There was something going on between Josh and Jersey Lee. Or, at least, there had been at one point. You could tell by the way Josh avoided looking at her, I wouldn’t be surprised if he wasn’t even reading that book, and the way he leaned as far away as the desk would allow. He did it casually, but it was still noticeable. You could tell as well by the way Jersey Lee kept bouncing her leg up and down nervously and gripped the edge of her desk so hard her knuckles turned white.
I don’t know why I cared enough to notice these details. Maybe it was the fact that John Steinbeck was just that boring or that I was naturally a nosey person. Whatever the reason, I was suddenly overwhelmed with curiosity.
“Donna.” I whispered leaning forward.
“What?” She whispered back.
“I need to ask you something.” I said leaning even further forward, hoping Jersey Lee couldn’t hear me.
“’Kay?” She asked back.
“Is there something going on between Jersey Lee and Josh?” I asked bluntly.
“Of course not!” She whispered harshly. “Are you crazy?”
“I was just wondering.” I whispered, trying to calm her down.
“Josh never has and never will do anything with that girl.” She sounded so angry I had to believe it.
“Okay.” I whispered. ‘Sorry.” I added, hoping she wasn’t offended by my curiosity.
“Don’t worry about it.” She sighed.
