I sat there twirling my pencil in between my fingers waiting patiently for Mr. Johnson to dismiss my from detention where I was the only student present.

“Only two more minutes miss foster.” Johnson said without looking up from the paper he was viciously marking with a red pen.

I looked out the window in annoyances the rain was pouring over the side of the school’s roof making a sheet of rain impossible to see through. I just stared waiting for the two minutes he would keep me here just to prove something that I would never understand. I glanced at the clock and started to pack my stuff, but when he sent a glare my way and tapped his watch I carefully put all my stuff back out of my bag and onto the table. And he went back to marking.

One glance at the clock and I was free. But I knew better then to just leave without permission. I cleared my throat, nothing. I once again cleared my throat louder, still nothing. Finale I went on a coughing fit his head snapped up then down at his watch.

“You may leave miss foster, don’t make this a habit.” He says going back to his marking.

“I won’t” not that he needed an answer he was still marking like there was no tomorrow.

I picked up my stuff and made a dash for the doors; I had a little over a half hour to get ready for work at 6:00 at the super market, where I would be a clerk until 11:00. Since my grandmother refuses to work, and it being my fault she has no money, I will be the one to bring in the green from now on.

The rain was still going and I wondered how much moisture a cloud could actually hold as I made my way across the parking lot towards the exit driveway. I hadn’t seen jess or Myles all day, no way to say yes to his offer, or no.

Not that it mattered because a large silver Toyota truck pulled up beside. With the passenger door open. I looked in quickly to see Myles with a big smile on his face that I returned and climbed in. I was half way in when I realized I was probably going to need a push to get all the way in, I was just about to slip off the seat when Myles reached out and graved a hand full of his sweatshirt and pulled me all the way.

“Light as a feather.” He said well chucking at my obvious problem with entering his vehicle.

“You could say that.” I mumbled as I mentally thought of me in a big bird’s costume well he pulled at one of my feathers still attached. I quickly shook my head….I was losing it.

“So where to?” he asked his laughter gone but still smiling.

“Chandler Street.” I said slightly relaxed. He blinked in surprise, I knew it wasn’t the richest street but it wasn’t the poorest either, “what?”

“Oh jess just lives down that street to.” He explained shooting me a smile. But it didn’t last long. I suddenly realized that maybe jess wasn’t exactly telling him what he did before he got to school. I stayed silent I wasn’t going to incriminate him. I already felt slightly bad at how I had snapped at him earlier.

I looked down and then said quickly, “I’ll just run in and back out to give your shirt and sweater back.”

He through me a smile knowing what I was doing before I did myself, changing the subject. “That’s fine with me.”

I nodded. Then smiled, “so you this charm you say you have, is it all due to notes?”

He flashed me a smile, “well I have to thank the little people, football, and my three sisters’s going through heartbreak and constantly telling me if I treated a girl like that they’d break my handsome face.”

I laughed, “Three sisters?”

“All older then me, Kate, she’s 27, Mary’s 24 and Alex’s 21. All live out of the house so now it’s just me and my mom” Myles said looking over at me with a you can’t imagine what I put up with over the years look.

“You dad?” I asked slightly interested but still knowing I was walking into territory that if it had been me I would have bite there head off for just asking.

“They got divorced when I was five,” he shrugged but I could see his eyes make a slight change into that darker blue. “He sends money to pay for the bills, buys cars for us, and pays for collage, makes up for him not actually being there.” He sounded slightly down a frown on his face where his smiles use to be, somewhere deep inside I felt a slight pain, “he has his own family now.”

I nodded looking out the window. I felt sorry for him, but then again at least he had a family.

“Of course that’s just a rich boy’s sob story.” And then the smile flashes on his face again any pain that was there was now gone.

I ran down the stairs with my clerk shirt on my black dress pants and the sweatshirt and white t- shirt in my hands ready to be returned to Myles who I had instructed to stay in his truck.

I was just reaching the door when her voice called out, “who’s in the yard, Sam.

“He gave me a ride home.” I said shortly taking my steps slowly not to show anything she could use against me.

Oh. Well that’s awfully nice of him isn’t?” I just nodded as she appeared from the living room and in front of the door. “So what’d you do to get a ride from him?”

“He offered.” I said trying to step around her.

“He offered? Sweetie boys like him don’t offer girl like you anything. Not unless you’re willing to repay him in a very sinful way.” She said sneering at me. She was giving me a religious speech. The woman version of Satan was giving me a lecture and accusing me of something un godly and sinful.

I just stared at her waiting for her to move. When she didn’t I said, “Unless you want me to be late for work I suggest you move aside.”

Her thoughts ran across her face like lighten and she quickly stepped into the living room calling over her shoulder, “if you’re late for work your going to be some hungry for the next few days.”

I just glared at her back and opened the door stepping out into the rain. I jogged to his truck passing him his things. I could barely hear him over the pounding of the rain when he asked if I was planning on walking to work through this. I just nodded. Then he gave me a look leaned over opened the passenger door that I leaning into through the window to give him his clothes. I quickly tried to get in on my own, for my own personal pride I did get in further then I had before but Myles quickly graved my waist and pulled me in the rest of the way.

He started up the truck and we took out of the driveway my grandmother glaring at me out the window in the living room.

Who was that?” Myles asked looking at me questions in his eyes.
