I woke up in the middle of the night with more tears streaming down my face. Foster stirred and opened his eyes lazily. He looked at me taking in my tears and was suddenly alert.
“What happened?” He asked.
“Bad dream.” I replied looking down.
“I don’t think that’s it.” Foster looked at me sternly. “What happened to you before you decided to come to me?”
Could I tell him I thought I saw blood red eyes staring at me from my window? My room was several floors off the ground. It didn’t seem logical that I would see someone looking in. There was a small ledge outside my window, but I couldn’t think of anything that could maintain the balance to stay up there or even the strength to climb there in the first place.
“Nothing.” I lied quietly. “ You just scared me earlier.”
Foster’s eyes narrowed then his face softened. “I’m sorry.”
Guilt washed through me. What if there was something here really to fear? Even if there were, it wouldn’t be right to lay that burden on Foster.
I smiled faintly. “You have nothing to apologize for.”
I looked over at the clock. It was 4:00 am. My eyes felt heavy but it seemed out of place to fall asleep next to Foster again. I didn’t want him to feel like I was some child that needed to be watched and soothed.
I looked at him. He looked at me.
Could this beautiful creature actually want me? Why? I took in Foster amber black eyes and then started to move away from him. But before I could dwell on my guilt, doubt, or utter desire, Foster pulled me back gently and embraced me with warm, protecting arms. I looked at him; he looked at me with the most gorgeous expression of tenderness.
“I’m not sure if I’m doing this right” He smiled down at me. “I’ve never felt this way towards anyone or anything. I’m not sure how to handle you, or even if you want me to try.”
He looked away shyly. A few moments of silence passed between us.
“Foster.” I began in a shaking voice as he looked back down at me. “If you want me, I’m yours”
Foster took my face in his hands gently and pressed his soft lips against mine. He tilted his head slightly to deepen the kiss and moved his arms around my waist. I wrapped my arms around his neck pulling him as close to me as possible. Foster kissed me lightly on lips once before pulling away and smiling.
“Scarlette.” He said in low seductive voice. “You are everything I want. But I don’t want to own you, that’s not my intention. I need you to understand that it is in my nature to be dangerous.”
“I don’t think you’re dangerous.” I said quietly feeling slightly rejected.
“I would try everything in my power not to be to you.” He answered me tucking my hair behind my ear.
I looked up at him in confusion.
“I need to know the truth about you Foster.” I demanded in a fierce voice. “I don’t know why but I have such a strong desire to be with you, no matter what you are. But I need to know what that is.”
He sighed and took both of my hands in his.
“I’m afraid.” He said. “That if you do find out you’ll runaway as fast as you can. Which wouldn’t be good.”
He smiled lightly but I didn’t say anything, so he continued.
“There is so much more than me. I don’t even know where to begin. There are many factors that go into your safety and why you’re here.”
His face turned white.
“I’m not very sure why you’re here actually.” He admitted quietly. “I don’t know why someone would put you in a place this dangerous.”
“Why is it so dangerous?” I asked.
Foster hesitated for a moment then asked.
“Do you believe that creatures of the dark exist Scarlette?”
“I may.” I answered honestly. “How are creatures of the dark relative to the danger here?”
“Its what we are.” He answered looking away.
In his words, I knew he was telling the truth.
