"Oh dear. Hmm. Now let's see. Should I chance it? or should I wait. Oh what to do what to do. Such a bother."

The strange voice comes to me through the darkness.

"Well I should probably wait. But what if… oh no, I can't wait! But perhaps… oh not that either. This is so hard. Hmm…"

I crack open one eye. I'm laying on a couch or some sort, in a small, but comfortable, brightly sunlit room.

Not my room.

I can see a pattern starting to emerge in my life.

"Oh my goodness! She's... you're awake!" says th strange female voice again. I open both eyes.

A wide-eyed expression comes into view, peering down at me.

"Who..." my voice comes out hoarse. I clear my throat. "Who are you?"

"Hello! I am ... well by 'who are you' do you mean what is my name or what is my title or what's my personality like orwho am I trying to become or..."

I give her a weird look and sit up. "What's your... name?" I ask.

"Well, my full name is actually Ashkyata-hera Di'Veralidaine... but you can call me Ash!"

"Okay... hello Ash."

She smiles. "Oh boy! Hello Sera!"

"Whoa! How do you know MY name?!" I start.

"Oh dear oh dear," she mumbles. "I knew it was too soon. I shouldn't have said that. I'm supposed to let you get used to it first and oh... I just knew I would mess up. Oh I'm so terrible at this. I'm sorry."

She says the last two words to me.

"Sorry for... what exactly?" I ask suspiciously.

"Well, it's kind of a long story and I didn't mean to dump it on you all at once!"

"You haven't really dumped anything on me. I have no idea what you're talking about." I say, completely bewildered. Is this a dream?

"Oh of course! How silly of me. Well, then where should I begin? I have to tell you everything but not at once and not confuse you but oh... where to begin! This is so hard..."

"How about you begin with... what is this place?" I suggest, looking around.

"Of course! Yes. Um. This place is... well it's sort of like my home. Actually not really, it's more like a house, but not a house exactly. Sort of a cabin or cottage or something but I don't live here. I mean I live here, but, oh how can I put this..."

I sigh. "Is there... someone else I can talk to?" I ask.

"Oh no I'm afraid not. They're all in Sennin. I'm the only one here but... but you don't know what Sennin is of course! Oh my I forgot how little you know. And your mother... Oh my goodness!"

This is going to take a very, very long time.

"Isn't there any way you can just tell me without getting all flustered?!" I ask impatiently.

"I'm sorry," she says. "It's just that I get nervous when I first meet people. ESPECIALLY royalty."

"Royalty? HA!" I exclaim. "I'm not royal. And if you think I am--"

"Oh but you ARE!" she says.

"No I'm not. You must have made a mistake," I say. "I'm Sera Lakewood. Just a normal, middle class person living in the U.S.A."

She just keeps shaking her head. "I don't make mistakes."

I raise my eyebrows.

"Okay" she admits. "Maybe once in a while but I would NEVER mess up on something this big.

"Sorry, it's true."

She doesn't look convinced.

"You can even check my DNA" I say, even though I'm sure she'd have a bit of trouble trying to figure out how to do that. "I have absolutely NO blood relation to ANYONE royal."

Of course, for all I know, I do.

But what she says next surprises me.

"Actually, if I took your DNA and tested it, it wouldn't even show the slightest resemblance to any human DNA at all on this planet."

Now she's completely lost it.

"Listen," I stand up.

"Oh no!" she says. "You can't leave! They're all after you, if you leave now someone's bound to get you! Oh dear oh dear..."

"Uhhh... get me?" I pause.

"Yes," she says solemnly, nodding her head. "Like that goblin."

"Goblin?!" I say. "What is this all about!"

"Well sit down and I'll tell you!" she says mysteriously.

Despite myself, I sit back down on the couch. I guess I'm too curious.

"All right, well first of all, like I said you're royal, a princess actually, heir apparent to the throne."

"What throne?" I ask.

"I'm getting to that!" she exclaims. "Well actually I'll back up. Your father and mother--"

"I already know I'm adopted," I interrupt. "My mom--"

"Stop interrupting!" she interrupts. "I KNOW you know you're adopted, now will you just listen?"

"Sorry," I mutter, closing my mouth.
"Your father and mother," she continues. "Neither of them are human."

I almost burst out laughing. "So I'm a little wolf cub or something that thinks she's a human?"

She folds her arms and glowers at me.

"Sorry," I say again. "Hey, you don't look very nervous anymore," I add.

"I'm not used to royalty being so... RUDE!" she exclaims. "I mean.. your mother would NEVER behave like--"

"So who IS my mother?" I ask, trying to get her back into the story. The very weird story.

"Ah yes. Your mother. Well she's a queen. Making you a princess. Your father however. He was a strange case. No one could believe it when they fell in love. It seemed so... wrong."

"Just because he was a peasant or something?" I ask, annoyed. What is so wrong with royalty falling in love with non-royalty? Why does everyone care so much about money these days?!

"No, he was actually pretty well off," she answers.

Oh.

"The thing is, he's a vampire."

She seems to be waiting for another exclamation from me. But I just say impatiently, "Go on!"

"Well, vampires and fairies don't mix."

"Fairies?"

"Oh yeah. Your mother is a fairy, did I forget to mention that? Ha ha silly me. Anyway, fairies and vampires are usually enemies. So it was very strange when one day they announced to the whole kingdom that they were engaged."

"Wait... so, if I'm to believe this story." I say, which I definitely do NOT, "and my parents were a fairy and a vampire, that would make me..."

"Half fairy, half vampire!" she exclaims happily.

"oh brother," I roll my eyes. Why do I care anyway? It's just a dumb story. I mean, who would ever actually believe something like this?

"That's how you weren't burned in the fire," she explains. "Magic. And it's why Jeremy was saved. He's just a normal human, but you healed him. Fairies have healing powers. See? Your arm is fine."

I look down at my arm. Sure enough, there was absolutely no sign at all that a wacko creep had dug into it with a knife yesterday.

"And it's why that goblin-- yes, he was a goblin-- attacked you last night. And why many more creatures are going to start coming. And..." she finishes, "it's why I can do this."

What the.... is she.... ? No way...

She's FLOATING.

My jaw drops. "What is this, some kind of joke?" I yell. "Because if it is..."

"It's not a joke dear," she says from above. "You know it's the only way anything I just told you would make sense." She lands next to me.

"Your real name isn't Sera Lakewood. You are Seraphina Lienysha Di'Veralidaine," she says. "And I'm your fairy godmother."
