Machi had made it through the apartment to her room, and onto her bed before she was conscious of her actions. Tears streamed down her face as she cried silently. Her occasional sobs and the low murmur of the TV were the only things that broke the silence.
Knika had been ordered there by her sister before, when she needed comforted and convinced that he wasn’t a liar. That Mail Jeevas wasn’t a liar. That when he promised her he would live, he would walk through the door later that day, unharmed. Knika walked in then, crouching beside Machi.
"Hey....hey, shhh....it’s alright..."
"Alright?! You call this ‘alright’?! Damn it, Knika, he promised me he’d live!"
"He had no control over that in the situation he was in, he couldn’t get to his gun!"
"Well, he should’ve had it somewhere where he could reach it, not down the back of his shirt! I mean, who gets surrounded by thirteen fucking armed bodyguards and doesn’t have their gun out?! It’s his fault entirely!!"
"Machi...he did this for the Kira case. Him doing this allowed Mello to kidnap Takada–"
"Not you too....enough with the Kira case, okay?! The case and everyone in it are just one big joke,"
"You need to stop being so selfish. He did this for the well-being of everyone, Kira’s gone insane,"
"I’m not being selfish!! And who told you that? They’re feeding you a bunch of bull, Knika."
"I’m not going to waste my time comforting you if you’re only going to argue."
"I guess you’d better leave then."
Knika stood up and sighed, giving her sister a last glance before exiting the room and shutting the door behind her. Machi cursed her sister under her breath for pointing out the obvious. She didn’t need to be told, she knew perfectly well what he died for, and how and why he did it. She gave a shuddering sigh before laying back on her bed, scenes from the ‘breaking news’ just minutes ago filling her head. Matt stepping out of his car...the ominous silence...she could see him mouthing something...but the camera and recording crew were too far away, she had no way of telling what....
"Wait a minute, wait a minute. Since when have the Japanese been allowed to carry such nice guns? I'm an accomplice in the kidnaping of Takada. Don't you have a bunch of questions to ask me? What's the point in firing–"
Then the shooting...all of them...it was triggered by one gunshot...the rest fired after that...that was when Machi’d screamed...the rest was a blur...the next thing she knew, she was here, in her room, on her bed. The glimpses she’d caught of him after that were ones that’d haunt her mind and dreams for the rest of her life. The prominent images surfaced now...all the bodyguards firing...continuously...bullet after bullet....watching him stand there, blood trickling down his face after being shot in the head, his vest staining a sickly crimson. His body then fell back against the maroon car, lifeless. Machi let the tears come again, there was no use in hiding them. Matt was dead.
