Naruto woke up slowly and opened his eyes, blinking as the bright sunlight hurt his eyes. He sat up slowly in his bed and rubbed his eyes before stretching his arms over his head and yawning loudly. He sighed happily as he remembered his dream vividly. Wow, that had been one great dream...
It had seemed so real... getting the note... going to Sasuke’s house... and then... he sighed again dreamily. They’d kissed. They’d really done it. He wished he’d stayed asleep so that he could continue the dream...
‘But it was only a dream,’ he thought bitterly. ‘It’s never going to really happen. It just isn’t possible.’
He jumped out of bed, his feet thudding lightly on the wooden floor, and walked to the bathroom slowly. He leaned forward and pressed his nose against the cold glass of the mirror. There was something different... but he couldn’t pinpoint what exactly was different.
He leaned back and shook his head in disbelief; great, now he was hallucinating. What next? Sasuke’s undying love?! He rolled his eyes and laughed bitterly. ‘Yeah, in my dreams...’
He walked back into his bedroom and looked around, finally realizing how messy it was. Clothes and scrolls were scattered all across the floor and his bed was still unmade, just like he’d left it. He sighed and picked up a jacket, sniffing it uncertainly and gagging before throwing it across the room.
Sighing in amusement, he picked up a couple of articles of clothing and threw the pile onto the bed before retreating the room. He came back a couple of seconds later with a laundry basket, quickly throwing the clothes into the basket and discarding the basket in the closet. He’d deal with it later, he reassured himself. After gathering up the scrolls and putting them in a neat pile in the corner, he walked back to the closet and began his normal morning routine.
This was how it would normally go...
He would yawn and grab a black shirt and jacket off of their hangers, putting them on slowly. He would then grab a pair of pants and walk into the kitchen, bouncing on one foot as he would try to walk and put the pants on at the same time. Finally, after falling on his butt, he would get the pants on and open the cabinet. Pulling out a cup of microwavable ramen, he would place it on the counter and put a kettle of water on the stove. He would then sit at the table, tapping his fingers on its wooden surface impatiently. When the kettle whistled loudly, he would get up and move the kettle off of the stove top and pour some water into the cup, cursing silently as he would burn his hand on the hot kettle. Replacing the lid, he would walk to the sink and turn it on, letting the cool water soothe his irritated hand for a few minutes. After sighing in relief, he would rub his burned hand and walk back over to his ramen cup, grabbing it and taking it to the table. He would eat silently and discard the empty cup in the almost full trash can.
And this was always done without a single thought. That was how normal this was for him.
And the routine was about to change for good, because the normalcy of this routine was broken when a knock on his front door broke his thoughtless trance and made him leave his hot cup of ramen on the counter.
“What the... who the hell is...” he mumbled to himself, unlocking the door slowly. He sighed and opened the door, forgetting to breathe as he saw who was at the door.
Sasuke.
“Hey,” Sasuke greeted him simply and smirked, folding his arms across his chest. Naruto finally took a breath, rather loudly, and asked in confusion, “What’s... goin’ on?”
Sasuke gave him an amused look. “What do you mean, what’s goin’ on?”
“I... uh... well...” he stammered, running a shaking hand through his hair. What was Sasuke doing here, anyway? Did somebody die? It was very likely that was the reason he was here... but if someone died, why was he smirking like that?
Sasuke chuckled. “That wasn’t a full sentence, Naruto.”
“I know...” he said, trying to hide the fact that his face was completely flushed. He chuckled nervously and untwined his hand from his hair before it got totally buried in it. Putting his hand at his side, he took a calming breath and asked, “So... how’s it goin’ with you lately?”
He waited a few seconds before looking at Sasuke again. Sasuke wasn’t even paying any attention to him; he was staring at something very intensely. He followed his gaze to his hand and flinched; the burn on his hand was quite visible. Sasuke finally looked up from his burn and asked in concern, “When did that happen?”
“... Just now. I burned it on my kettle,” he explained, giving the raven-haired Nin a funny look. “It’s nothing, really.”
“It looks bad,” Sasuke informed him simply, walking forward until their faces were a couple of inches apart. “Can I help?”
“Help?” Naruto murmured in complete disbelief. What the hell?!
Sasuke... what was up with him?!
*************************
‘What is up with him?’ Sasuke thought, staring into the blonde Nin’s eyes in wonder. He was acting rather strangely... and he wasn’t about to tell him why, that was for sure.
“Help?” he heard Naruto say quietly, as if he was totally confused by his offer to help with his burn. The burn did look really bad; it looked like he’d stuck the entire back of his hand on the hot kettle for a whole ten seconds before realizing what was happening.
“Yeah. Duh, you baka!” he laughed, poking him on the forehead.
“But... but...”
“But what?”
“But... oh, never mind!” he sighed, walking back into his house in defeat. Sasuke smirked in triumph and followed him into the living room, sitting on the couch in silence. He watched as Naruto walked into the kitchen and sighed; what was up with him?
He waited patiently as Naruto finished making his ramen and watched him silently as he ate it. He was starting to get really suspicious; Naruto was avoiding him. But why?
He was about to find out.
*************************
“Okay, that’s it,” Sasuke muttered to himself before standing up and walking over to where Naruto was sitting. Naruto stared at him with a funny expression and swallowed. “What’s it?”
“Why are you avoiding me?”
“Why am I what?” Naruto asked, twirling his fork in a deliberate attempt to avoid looking at Sasuke, but it didn’t work for long.
“Don’t play dumb, Naruto,” Sasuke scoffed before snatching the fork out of Naruto’s hand and setting it down on the table. “First with the nervous stuff, then the fact you tried to hide the burn, and now you’re just ignoring me completely. What’s up?”
“Uh... I wasn’t ignoring you,” Naruto said, not even trying to make excuses for the other stuff.
Sasuke sighed and kneeled down so he was at eye-level with the blonde. “Really? Then why are you avoiding meeting my eyes?”
“I’m not!” Naruto sighed and tried to pick his fork back up, but Sasuke grabbed his hand and squeezed. Naruto stared for a few seconds before giving Sasuke a really freaked out look. “I should be asking the questions anyways.”
“What?” Sasuke asked in confusion. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“You’re acting really funny, Uchiha!” Naruto accused, pointing a finger at Sasuke with his free hand.
“Me? What about you?!” Sasuke yelled, smacking Naruto’s finger down. “You’re acting like yesterday never happened!!”
And Naruto finally snapped to attention and looked into Sasuke’s eyes. “What about yesterday?”
Sasuke let his hands drop to his sides and stood up. “You... forgot?”
“What was there to forget?” Naruto asked, completely confused. He stood up as well and gave Sasuke a peculiar look.
Sasuke looked away with a pained look and murmured, “So it wasn’t even important enough for you to remember?”
“Important?” Naruto questioned, trying to get Sasuke’s attention by waving his hand in front of Sasuke’s face. “Woohoo! Hello!!!”
Sasuke finally pushed his hand away and turned to leave. “Fine. If our relationship isn’t even important enough for you to remember for even one day, then whatever. I don’t care.”
“Relation-” Naruto started, before remembering his dream. He replayed it in a fast forward in his head before coming to the ending part.
~ “So... what now?”
“Well, I guess we’re together now... right? We are together?” Naruto asked hopefully, earning himself another chuckle.
“Yeah... we’re together, Naruto.”
“Good, cuz this would really suck if you decided that I’m not a good kisser and then leave.”
Sasuke laughed. “Don’t worry, kid. I don’t plan on leaving.”
“Good... that’s good.” ~
But he finally realized something that hit him like a train; it hadn’t been a dream, had it? It had been real...
“Sasuke, wait!” Naruto yelled, running forward and grabbing Sasuke’s hand. It felt cold in Naruto’s warm hand; shivering, Naruto said, “So it hadn’t been a dream? All of it?”
“A... dream?” Sasuke murmured before closing his eyes. Naruto noticed Sasuke was shaking slightly and squeezed his hand in worry. “Sasuke, are you-”
Naruto finally noticed that Sasuke wasn’t shaking, but trying not to laugh. He punched him on the shoulder and finished, “Are you laughing at me?!”
“Well... it’s... funny!” Sasuke choked, finally letting the laughter that had threatened to ruin his concentration and train of thought out. After he calmed himself down, he turned and grabbed Naruto’s other hand in his. “You... actually thought it was a dream?”
“Well... yeah!” Naruto said, and Sasuke burst out laughing again. “Would you cut that out?!”
“No... way!” Sasuke laughed, pulling him into a hug. Naruto gulped and asked quietly, “So... you’re not mad at me?”
“Nah... I’m not mad,” Sasuke reassured him. Naruto sighed with relief and rested his head on Sasuke’s chest. He closed his eyes and made a note to himself; DON’T FORGET ABOUT STUFF ANYMORE.
“Uh... Naruto?” Sasuke finally asked, making Naruto open his eyes and look at him. “Was... it really that good?”
“What was really good?”
“Uh... well... all of it...”
Naruto stared at him for a second before answering, “Well, I was pretty convinced you hated me.”
“Hn,” Sasuke sighed, resting his chin on the top of Naruto’s head.
“But... it was better than good. It was amazing.”
Sasuke looked back down at the blonde and said simply, “Good.”
And then he leaned down and kissed him, ending the conversation.
