She listened to Jimmy Eat World. He listened to Vampire Weekend. She corseted her dress. He straightened his bow tie. She looked beautiful and he wished her could see her. But that would never happen. They were best friends for never. Every now and then she crossed his mind and every time she heard that song she though of him. It had been months. The scars had almost vanished. But when he texted her after hardly speaking since the beginning of the school year and asked her to his after prom party, she said yes. He danced with his girlfriend and she jumped around with her friends. For a brief second they would find each other's eyes across the crowd. Was she still in love with him? No. But she missed their friendship and she wondered if he did too. She wondered if he thought about her at all. He had tried to make amends, but it wasn’t in the stars for them to be in each other's life.
The party scene had never been her thing. She wasn’t really sure how to handle herself in the spinning intoxicated environment. He spotted her before she saw him. He greeted her with a hug. He was like that. Always pushing things under the rug when they obviously were not okay. He smelled like rum. His latest fragrance. She looked into his eyes, now glazed over with high school glory. They weren't the eyes that once shone blue with a summer of lakes, late night talks until sunrise and bonfires. That's how she remembered him. Love, youth, freedom…nothing. She searched his face and was left with drunken slurs. They might as well have been strangers.
