I took a quick shower, using hotel soap and shampoo. I did learn however that we were in the Summery Bay Hotel, which meant I was only a fifteen minute walk away from home. I dried off as best I could with the tiny white hotel towels before putting on Caden’s too big clothes. It felt strange at first, but that was probably because a.)they were guy clothes, and b.) they were made for someone much taller than me. I had to roll the sweats up four times before I was even able to walk, and when I put on the shirt it felt like I was six again and wearing one of my dad’s shirts as a nightgown.
I came out of the bathroom to once again find Caden not really watching the t.v. He smirked when he saw me, in return I just scowled and went to the bedroom to retrieve my heels. There was no way he would be getting me to wear his shoes. I slipped them on and walked back out to the main room.
Caden laughed full out this time.
“What?” I snapped when he had calmed down more.
“Well, I guess I won’t have to worry about you escaping in those, you can’t even walk in them.”
“I can walk just fine,” I scoffed.
“Oh yeah and that’s why you tripped last night and almost smashed your face into concrete.
“Jerk.”
“Oh yeah, I feel so completely insulted by you though out and developed come-back.”
I rolled my eyes “Can we just go please?”
Caden got up and stretched out his long arms, “Yeah, but before we go, even though I don’t think you’ll be trying anything, I’m just warning you, you wont get away from me. But I promise you when everything here is done you’ll be free.”
“What is it exactly that we have to do?” I asked cautiously.
“That’s something you don’t need to know right now.”
“But-“ I was interrupted by Caden’s sudden closeness. He had moved from the couch to right in front of me.
“Personal bubble invasion.” I wanted the words to come out sharper but I had made the mistake of tilting my head up to look at him and was lost in his eyes so the words sounded pathetic even to me.
Caden got even closer to me, he looked down at me and smiled, probably at my expression which was somewhere between disbelief and shock.
“I wouldn’t ask so many questions if I were you.” he said his voice suddenly sharp.
“Why, don’t you know the answers?” I challenged.
Caden’s face softened, “I know everything.”
“Really, who was the first president in Canada?” I asked.
“Canada doesn’t have a president, they have a prime minister. The first one was Sir John A. Macdonald, and the current prime minister is Stephen Harper, in case you were wondering.”
I was silent for a moment, “Dang, I though I had you fooled.” I said, Caden rolled his eyes not believing my terribly lying. Caden walked away from me then, unlocking the door and holding it open for me, I walked through Caden beside me in an instant. He led us down the hall, we passed by lots of people, at first I was confused because who goes on vacation in march? But then I remembered that it was the weekend of spring break.
“Oh this is so not fair.” I whispered to myself.
“What?” Caden said looking down at me.
“Andrea, Mira, Vicky and I totally had the whole week planned out. We were even going to pull a prank on-“ I stopped talking abruptly. And titled my head slightly upwards in an attempt to hold in my tears.
“What?” Caden asked.
“It’s nothing.”
“No tell me, who were you going to prank?’
“Tim.” I whispered.
“And who’s that.”
“My horribly awful ex.”
This took Caden by surprise and he didn’t say anything.
“I’m sorry.” he said.
“It’s okay, it’s a good thing we broke up, he was an ass.” I said.
“Then why are you crying?”
“I’m not crying.” but my voice broke, and sure enough tears started spilling down my cheeks.
Caden put his arm around my shoulder, “He was a jerk to break up with someone as pretty as you.”
I laughed, “Ha, me pretty. Yeah right.” We walked a little bit longer before we came to the elevator. There were about five other people in there with us and it was crowded.
The button for the lobby was already pushed. We started to descend and I looked up dismally to watch the numbers drop. 18.........17.......
“Ohmygod.” I said shocked. I collapsed onto the ground hugging my knees to my chest I closed my eyes.
“Aria!” Caden shouted, his voice thick with concern. “Aria, what happened? Are you okay?” his questions all came out in a rush. I remained silent, slowly rocking myself back and forth. “Aria, talk to me.” Caden said more softly now, his voice sounded closer to me.
“We were on the nineteenth floor!” I managed to squeak out.
“Hey, boy! Is that girlfriend of yours okay?” came an unknown voice. One of the others in the elevator with us.
“I’m not sure.” Caden said to the voice, “Aria,” his attention focused back on me. “Are you frightened of heights?”
“Not exactly.”
“Elevators?”
“Not exactly.”
“Then what’s got you so freaked?’ Caden sighed, growing impatient.
“Being high up in an elevator.” Suddenly the ground beneath me came to a stand still I screamed. I felt someone’s hand cover my mouth, and hoped it was Caden’s.
“Aria, Aria, Aria! Sh! We’re in the lobby.”
I opened my eyes to see Caden’s face peering intently at me, but more importantly was the open elevator door behind him revealing indeed the lobby, with lots of faces staring quizzically at me.
Caden helped me up, and protectively put his arm around my waist, led me out into the lobby and to the outside.
“Well, going back up should be interesting.”
Despite myself I laughed. “Nu uh, we’re taking the stairs.”
Caden groaned., “Lovely, a chance for me to work on my cardio.” I looked up at him to see him smirking down at me.
“I think I can walk by myself now.” Caden however kept his arm around me, “Fine, but I’m not escaping, not in this outfit however.”
“Well then pick a store any store, and let’s update your wardrobe.”
