The Links (Part 3)

Here is a brief preveiw of this chapter: Sealie could almost see the anger brewing inside of him, getting ready to come rushing out in one big explosion. Victoria and Kelly had crossed the line. There was a moment of silence, like still air before a storm. Dad lay in the dirt and leaves, his face growing redder and redder. Victoria and Kelly exchanged worried glances. They seemed to sense they had gone to far as well.

The Links (Part 3)

Sealie looked up from the trail and saw a small white building. ‘That must be the cottage…’ She thought, squinting to get a better look. The building had dirty, white, chipped paint smeared over old boards and it’s green roof was missing shingles in various places. Rotten, wooden steps lead up to an ugly, burgundy door with a cloudy, glass window. Sealie sighed and began to trudge slowly towards the steps. She wondered how much her father was paying for them to stay at this place… she didn’t think it was worth a cent. ‘Oh well!’ She thought. ‘It will be worth it jus to watch Kelly and Victoria’s reactions. Sealie could picture looks of absolute disgust plastered on their faces.

She tiptoed up the steps, afraid they might not hold her weight. The looked like they could collapse any second and Sealie was relieved when her hand gripped the rusty door handle. She took a deep breath and turned. The handle squeaked and the door inched open revealing a large room. Sealie stepped inside and looked around. The room was littered with mismatched furniture. An old stove was randomly placed in one of the corners. It obviously was no use any more and served only for decorative purposes. An old oil lamp was placed on a small round stool in the opposite corner. ‘These people certainly have a unique way of decorating...’Sealie concluded noticing a black and white picture on the wall.

At first glance Sealie assumed it was a picture of water. ‘Who would take a picture of water..? Jeeze these people are nuts!’ Sealie thought. But after studying the photo more closely she saw there was something in the water. ‘It’s shaped sort of like a human.. Must have been one of there buds doing the back stroke or something.’ Sealie decided and turned her attention back to the room.

The floor was a mess, scratched and dirty. The walls were simply wood, no paint. Many pictures hung around the room all of them coloured except for the one Sealie had looked at.

Sealie kicked off her muddy running shoes and continued looking around the cottage. Sealie discovered that the cottage had 4 rooms downstairs including the room she had already been in. There was a tiny kitchen with a tiny fridge, a tiny dinning room with an extra tiny table, and a “stair room” as Sealie decided to call it, seeing as it’s only purpose was to hold the stairs. There was no computer, no TV, no phone, and no radio. ‘Victoria and Kelly are going to have heart attacks!’ Sealie smiled.

Upstairs there were three bedrooms, which meant someone had to share a room. It would probably end up being Sealie because Kelly and Victoria usually insisted upon having their own room. Sealie didn’t really care though.. she didn’t mind sleeping with her dad. Besides his was shaking snores, he was alright. It was a shame he ended up with two nasty kids. ‘It was their mums fault’ Sealie thought, ‘She is just as stuck up as they are. Like mother like daughter.’ “Thank God for business trips!” Sealie said out loud. ‘Speaking of Kelly and Victoria… Where are they?’ Not that Sealie wanted to see them… she just didn’t want to miss their reactions when they saw the cottage. She walked towards the nearest of the many windows and tried to see beyond the glass and to the trail but everything was blurry and indistinguishable. The glass must have been very old. ‘This sucks, what’s the point of having windows if you can’t even see out of them!?’ Sealie frowned as she walked towards the front door. When Sealie opened it she was greeted with screaming and yelling. Kelly and Victoria were facing their father looking as if they were ready to attack him. Their Dad was trying to calm them down. “Sweet hearts… It’s not as bad as you set it up to be. It cost me a lot and-” “THEN GET A REFUND! I AM NOT SPENDING TWO WHOLE FREAKIN WEEKES HERE!” Kelly shrieked taking a powerful step forward. Her actions were just as intimidating as her words. “YEAH DAD! NOWAY AM I WAISTING TWO WHOLE WEEKS AT THIS DUMP!” Victoria joined in.

Their father stepped back. Sealie saw what was coming and bit her lip. It all happened in slow motion… His foot got caught on a rock, He lost his balance, A look of shock came over his face and he flew into the air well waving his arms around wildly. Sealie closed her eyes and when she opened them he was on the ground. Sealie could almost see the anger brewing inside of him, getting ready to come rushing out in one big explosion.

Victoria and Kelly had crossed the line. There was a moment of silence, like still air before a storm. Dad lay in the dirt and leaves, his face growing redder and redder. Victoria and Kelly exchanged worried glances. They seemed to sense they had gone to far as well.

This was better than Sealie had expected and she couldn’t wait for the big explosion. ’10, 9, 8..’ Sealie counted internally, ‘7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, KA-BOOM!’ “THAT’S IT!” Dad yelled even louder than Sealie was hoping for. “I AM SICK OF YOUR COMPLAINING! SHUT UP!!! FROM NOW ON WHAT I SAY GOES AND I SAY WE ARE STAYING HERE FOR TWO WEEKS AND YOU’RE GOING TO LIKE IT! NOW GET UP TO YOUR ROOMS AND STAY THERE!” Dad finished. Gasping with rage he stood up and brushed the dirt off his clothes.

Kelly and Victoria stomped towards the steps. No ifs, no buts, just silence. But the tension in the air was suffocating and Sealie could feel it. She moved closer the edge of the step to make way for her sisters. Sealie studied each of their expressions as they passed. Victoria walked inside first without even glancing at Sealie. Her face was as still, and cold as stone. Kelly followed behind Victoria and noticed Sealie staring so she turned to face her. “What are you string at?!” Kelly demanded under her breath so their father wouldn’t hear. She was so angry she was shaking. “I…Err…Nothing… I just-” Sealie stumbled trying to hide her smile, but before she got a chance to answer she was on the ground, a sharp pain piercing through her right leg. Sealie looked up to where Kelly had been standing at the top of the steps, but Kelly had already gone inside.
