Chapter 1

The new house

“Asuki! Hurry up!”

“I’m coming,” Asuki replies sadly, and gets in the moving truck her parents rented. She looks out the window, watching her favorite house grow smaller in the distance. “We didn’t have to move.”

“I thought we talked about this already.”

Asuki sighs. Her parents both lost their jobs, and they’re moving to a large city for a fresh start.

“You could have gotten new jobs there . . .” Asuki says quietly.

“We are moving somewhere bigger, so we have more options. Now please, enough of this.”

“Fine.” Asuki plugs in her earphones, and turns on her ipod. Nickelback rushes through the wires, and soothes her.

She can’t help but think of all her friends and all her memories of being little. They seem so far away now, like she can’t get them back because they were all at that home. Asuki had lived there for thirteen years, since she was three.

Tears threaten to stream down her face, but she knows that if her dad sees her crying, he will be angry that she is acting like he has ended her life.

In a way though, she believes he has.

*three days of driving pass*

“Asuki, ASUKI! Wake up! We’re here!” She hears her mom yelling over her music.

She sighs. “What?”

“Lighten up please. Your dad is excited so please just let him be happy.”

Asuki puts on her fake girly smile, “So like this!”

Her mom does the same act, to mock her, “Yeah! Now stop the sarcasm, or your room will be the last one we organize!”

Asuki knows that her mom was trying to be serious, and prove to her that she is being a brat, but she couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re a dork, mom,” Asuki says playfully.

“Yeah, just like my daughter.” She says and smiles. “But seriously though, don’t ruin this for your father.”

“Ok.” Asuki falls out of the ridiculously tall truck. She dusts off her jeans and walks over to her parents. “Wow,” she says, I can’t believe they bought this piece of crap . . . she finishes.

The yellow-cream color of the paint is peeling off, showing an ugly dirt color below. Shutters are squeaking in the wind, each of them only hanging on one hinge, almost all of the windows have at least one crack, and one is completely broken. The front door is a weird yellow green, and its screen is lying off to the side on the ground.

“Isn’t it great Asuki? We can fix it up and make it our own.”

“Yeah, can’t wait.” Asuki says with a small hint of annoyance in her voice. “So, can I choose my room?”

“There are only three bedrooms, so whichever one you don’t choose we’ll make a guest room out of.”

“Alright.” Asuki goes to open the door, but as she touches the knob, she gets weird shudders down her spine.

“What’s the hold up?”

“Sorry, this is just a big moment . . . you know?” She lied.

She gripped the door harder, and pushed it open. The inside was better than the outside, much better. She still couldn’t shake away the shudder she had when she first came up, but the house was rapidly growing on her. She felt an attachment to it, she knew it would be a good home.

“Tap tap tap tap.”

“Mom what was that?!” Asuki said as she ran over to hide behind her mom, but she wouldn’t let her. “You can’t tell me you didn’t hear that!”

“Of course I heard it. Why don’t you go upstairs and see what’s broken?”

“What! Why me? Why can’t dad?!”

“Oh Asuki, just go.” Her father says.

“Fine,” she sighs and turns to go up the stairs to the attic.

“Tap tap.” She hears the noise again, and the hairs on the back of her neck stand up.

“Thump. Thump. Thump.”

“Oh my gosh . . . I hate this place!” she whispers loudly.

Asuki touches the knob, almost expecting the shudders to come again, but nothing.

“Thump. Thump. Thump.”

She gathered all the courage she could muster and opens the attic door.

A large fur coat falls and knocks her onto the hallway floor, and starts licking her face.

“Haha! A dog! You guys got me a dog!? Hi baby, oh, you are so pretty!” She stood up to get a better look at it. It had a light brown-ish red coat, and a large saggy and cute face. “What type of dog is . . . he?”

“He’s a Blood Hound. What do you think?”

“Oh! The dogs that sniff out criminals and stuff? He is so cute! I love him you guys.” Now her parents were standing at the bottom of the staircase.

“We thought you would like him.”

“So what’s his name?” Asuki asks.

“I don’t know, what’s his name?” Her father asks back.

“I get to name him? . . . Can I think about it a while?”

“Of course. Come down and help us unpack.”

“Hey, can I have the attic be my room?”

“Sure, I guess so.” Her mom says.

“Sweet.” Asuki turns around. “This place isn’t that bad. What do you think?” She asks her new friend.

So, you’re my new master. Well, it could be worse. He thinks

“I love you cutie.” Asuki reaches down, and pets him.
In chapter two, the ghost that haunts this house makes his debut.
