I laid my head on his chest as I lay next to him. The sunset glistening off the ocean; the white sand serving as a soft blanket. He held me tight as we watched the sun go down. A tear quietly fell from my face and sadness filled the air. It’s funny how much you push all the sadness to the back of your mind until the last moment...The moment it finally hits you...that you are losing what you love. “I’ll always be here, Sydney... in your heart. I wont forget you”....

Chapter One
Graduation Day
I crawled out of bed to the smell of breakfast cooking downstairs. I looked at the clock on my night stand which read 8:32 am. I figured I had better get up now, even though it was the absolute last thing that I wanted to do at this very moment. Today was Friday, June 2nd. I had a long week, what with final exams and all, I couldn’t be happier that it was Friday. I put on my slippers that were sitting next to the foot of my bed and slowly worked my way down the 45 cold wood stairs and into the fragrance-filled kitchen.
“Hey. Good mornin’ Syd. Eighteenth birthday, thought I’d make you some breakfast.” Ahh yes. The reason for the amazing smells that floated through the house; the Big 18; the freedom age. Call it whatever you like...I call it a rude awakening. Quite literally, actually.“Hey dad. Wow, breakfast, you’re really going all-out this year aren’t ya.” I managed to sarcastically mumble out as I slowly dragged my way over to the kitchen table. “Aw, come on Syd. You know I’m tryin’.” He put a plate of french toast and eggs in front of me as I thumped down into my chair. He was a good cook when he tried. “Yeah, I know, dad. I just really wanted to take that trip this year.” “I know that, Syd, but we’re a little short on money this year.” Ever since I was twelve I has been planning a road trip with the gang. But once our restaurant got closed down when I was 16 from the lack of payments, money has been kind of scarce around here. “Well you better be heading off now or you’re gonna be late to your own graduation.” Ah yes, the last day I had to set foot in Hamilton High School. I couldn’t wait. I finished the last bite of the amazing french toast and got up from my chair. “Aren’t you coming?” I asked as I washed my plate in the sink. “Of course, but I have to clean up and get ready first. I’ll meet you there. Do you think you can still catch a ride with Travis?” Travis Bradshaw was the 6'2_ blonde hair, blue-eyed jock living in that so called house around the corner. I’ll bet my house is the same size as his closet. Anyways, this kid is so egotistical and just can’t wait to get into any girls pants...and he usually can with his looks like his, but not me, and that drives him crazy. “Sure dad, I’ll give him a call.” I walked upstairs to my room and got ready. I had to shower and do my hair and makeup. I stood in my room, wrapped in a towel, staring at my clothes and trying to find something to wear. It doesn’t really matter that much I guess since I will have that hideous cap and gown on. Our school colors are black and red and the head of the school committee decided it would be a great idea for the gown to be a bright red and the cap to be a solid black with a red little dangely thing. What an idiot. So I threw on some clothes and the monstrosity they call a gown. I waited outside for Travis to pull up. Of course he brought his most expensive car today. Who was he trying to impress? We go to a high school where half the kids are just as broke as me. I ignored it and climbed in. We sped off to the high school where a certificate awaited us.
We took our seats they provided, which were small, tan, medal, fold up chairs. Our school is a little low on cash as well. I was sitting there for about twenty minutes before the ceremony started. Principal Manning and Vice Principle Turner walked up to the stage and started presenting the awards. A few student gave speeches and a few spoke of their future plans. Finally, two and a half hours later, the last student was called and the Principle gave a nice little speech saying how happy he is for our future success and how proud he was, blah, blah, blah. Everyone clapped and we threw our caps into the air like you see in the movies. I caught up with my boys and Laney and we talk for a little while, but I had to leave.
After the ceremony, goodbyes, tears, I found my dad. “Hey there, kiddo. So, you’re finally done with high school. How does it feel?” Aware of the unusually happy smile that lit up his entire face, I knew something was up. “Um, great, I guess. What’s up with you?” I asked as I stuck my chin up and crossed my arms over my chest. “Why, what on earth would make you think something was up?” Ok. Now that did it. What was he planning? “Oh, so you’re all Mr. Smileypants for no reason at all, eh Big Man?” And of course his smile grew. “Come with me.” He quickly turned and headed toward the packed full parking lot. I went to follow him, not completely willing I must add, when someone knew caught my eye. He was standing next to Travis. He was a little shorter than him, but just as athletically built. A swimmer’s body, no doubt. Their faces showed a little resemblance, so I was guessing family. I caught eye contact with him. Oh. My. God. His beautiful icy-blue eyes set in a perfectly sculpted face, contrasted against his jet black hair. My father broke the trance that this new found glory set on me. “Hey Syd_ You coming, or what?” “Yeah.” I finally broke eye contact with him and hurried after my father. The memory of this angel is now forever burned into my memory. I looked back to see if he was still there and I bumped into my dad. “Oh_ Sorry dad.” I looked around for a minute. “Where’s your car?” He smiled again. “I didn’t take my car.” Ok..Now I was officially confused. “So..how did you get here?” I have to imagine my face looks pretty silly at this point, it usually does when I’m confused. He dangled a set of keys in front of my face by the key ring on his index finger. “I took your’s.” If I could think clearly then, I’d say my mouth had dropped so far it hit the pavement. “Oh my God, dad_ Are you serious__” I looked at the truck we were standing next to. There sat the truck of my dreams that fit me perfectly. It was a 2004, black, F-150 STX Ford. “Dad__ Oh_ Thank you, thank you, thank you_” I jumped up and swung my arms around his neck. As he put me back on the ground, this mornings conversation flooded back into my head. “Wait..say..how did we afford this? He grinned as he said “Don’t you worry about that. Oh, I almost forgot. All arrangements have been made.” Ok..once again I was confused. “For what?” He put one arm around my shoulder and put the keys in front of my face again. “For your road trip, of course_” Tears of joy began to well up in my eyes. I hugged him again, tighter than before. “Dad. Thank you so much_ You’re the best.” My dad had never been good with emotions. He cleared his throat and backed up a little bit. “Yeah, yeah. Everything’s all set. You leave in exactly two months. Which gives you time to go for a week and come back in time to get ready for college.” Just then Travis and his following angel walked by. “Hey hey, Syd_ Nice truck_ See you around_” He laughed as he kept walking. He had a bigger ego now than he did this morning, I could sense it. The handsome figure walking next to his side gave a quick stare, a slight smile, and then looked away. Once again I was left in a spell. His smile was intoxicating. I had to find out who this guy was.

The Ceremony
I drove over four hours this morning to get here on time to see my friend graduate. I was still recovering from my graduation parties this past week. I sat close the back in a very uncomfortable metal chair. I watched as one student after the next walked on stage, took their certificate, and walked off. Most were shy and just went up and off, but there were a few class clowns who provided a little entertainment here and there. Travis was one of those people and he supplied a good laugh. After that, I zoned out for a while, but when I looked up I saw her. She was beautiful. I couldn’t recall the name that the principal called out. She wasn’t one of the shy ones, but she definitely wasn’t a clown either. She was pretty chill about the whole thing. I watched as she walked down off the stage. After that I didn’t pay attention to anyone else. I sat there and stared at her as she joked around and laughed with the people sitting around her. Her laugh was contagious; I smiled when she did and chuckled when she laughed. I’m sure I looked like an idiot to those around me but I didn’t notice there reactions nor did I care. Before I knew the whole thing was over and Travis has shaking my should and laughing. “Hey! You made it! Look, I have some people I want you to me. Come with me.” I stood up, gave one last glance at her, and walked off with Travis. He was introducing me to some of his friends and a few admiring girls when I turned and looked toward the parking lot and caught her eyes. She stared for a little bit and bumped into what I assumed to be her father. He was a big man. I gave a slight chuckle. “What?” I looked back at Travis. “Hmm? Oh, nothing.” I looked toward the cars again and she impressively jumped up high enough to throw her arms around the big man’s neck. Something exciting was happening over there. I watched as he handed her a set of keys. “Alright, since you’re not paying attention to these beautiful ladies, let’s go.” I quickly turned back to the group I was standing in. I looked from the girls to Travis and back to them. “My apologies, girls. My mind is...elsewhere at the moment. Long drive and all that, I’m tired.” As we walked to Travis’ car, we passed her. Travis’ threw out some smart ass remark at her and just smiled. She didn’t look like she was breathing. The drive back to Travis’ house was about forty-five minutes long. I was lost in thought as he rambled on about how hot one of the girls’ was. I didn’t care about them. Who was she?
