Ding Dong
“Cadence, that boy is here!” I was dragging my bags down. I knew that I was only going to be gone for three days, but I also knew that there was a lake. Patrick plus lake equals me soaking wet. I had a bag for my clothes and a bag for my shoes. I had a little bag for make up and hair supplies.
“Good lord, are you moving away?”
“No, you’re stuck with me until next fall.” I grunted as I tugged my biggest bag when we got tangled with my smaller bag. My dad opened the door and my mom greeted Craig. He helped me carry my bags and we set them in the trunk of his red car.
“I'm bringingtwo boards so we could work more on your skills.”
“That’s awesome. Helmet?”
“Check.” He smiled and my dad came outside.
“You take care of my baby girl.”
I could tell my dad made Craigfeel inferior and he should. My dad was a big guy. “Don’t worry, sir. I won’t let anything happen to her.”
“You better not.”
“Floyd, be nice.” My mother came out and gave me a hug. “You call if you need anything.”
“I will.”
“Have fun on your trip.”
“I will, bye.”
TWO HOURS LATER.
“We finally made it!” I jumped out of the car from being cramped and stretched.
The others had already made it and checked in our hotel.
The boys: Patrick, Dennis, Ben, and Craig had a room together and I was in a room with Hannah and Kaitlynn. Apparently Jenny cheated on Ben by kissing one of her friends and they broke up. So, he got back with Bethany. Again.
Craig was very nice and carried my big bags to my room. Our rooms were connected by a door which was open and everyone was going back and forth talking. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. I had done a good job avoiding Benjamin Harper and now he was practically sleeping in the same room as me.
A few minor bands that I didn’t catch the name of played at the carnival. It would have a Whirl-a-Twirl, a Ferris wheel, hall of mirrors, game booths, and such. It was going to be up until Sunday night. I spent most of my night with Craig. He won me a giant teddy bear, which I had always found overrated. He tried to hold my hand, but as soon as his fingers touched mine I jerked my hand and pointed at Patrick and Hannah.
“Hey, let’s go say hi.” I walked towards them in my black ballet flats. I was wearing Craig’s jacket because I left mine in the room hoping that if Harper saw me wearing Craig’s jacket he would get jealous.
Once I got to where they were Hannah grunted and spun on her heels walking away. “What’s with her, Pat-Pat?”
“Dennis.” Patrick sighed and walked away as well.
“I’m sorry, Craig. I should go talk to her.”
He smiled in an understanding way. “Go ahead, I’ll see you in the morning.” I gave him a hug and went on my way.
I got in the room and Hannah was flipping through channels on the television.
“What happened?”
Her eyes were glued to the screen. “He told me he loved me.”
I sat on the bed. “And?”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“Do you love him?”
“No, it’s been four months!”
“Some people fall fast.” She sighed and fell back on the bed.
“I don’t know, Cade.”
“So, you love Patrick?”
“What? No. Well as a friend. Nothing more.” She was staring at the ceiling.
“Well, you used to love him. How’d you fall out of love so fast?”
“What’s that supposed to mean.”
“You’re fickle.”
“I’m fickle? Why would you say that I’m fickle?” She was getting mad. She was stll laying down but propped on her elbows.
“Because you went from being all Patrick this and Patrick that to Dennis, Dennis, Dennis.”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes. I just don’t see how you could forget about a guy that you’ve had a crush on since grade school. Just because some new guy came around.”
“Cadence! Patrick doesn’t even like me! Not like that anyways. I never had a chance with him. We’ll never be anything more than just friends so why can’t I be with a guy that just told me that he loved me?”
“How would you know if he didn’t like you? You never took a chance to even tell him how you felt! All you had to do was open your mouth and you would have been together. You were too scared.” I was almost yelling and I was using a lot of hand motions.
“Great advice coming from a hypocrite.”
“I’m not a hypocrite, Hannah!”
“Yes you are! You’re sitting here telling me if I told someone how I felt about them I would be with them and here you are not telling Ben how you feel about him! Not only that but you’re also talking about how I just forgot about Patrick. Did you forget about Ben? You’re hanging around Craig an awful lot!” She was standing at this point. Her shoulders relaxed and she said, “How do you know that me and Patrick would be together anyways?”
I got up and was happy I was still in Craig jacket so I wouldn’t have to put it back on. “Whatever, Hannah.” I opened the door and stepped into the cool air. I couldn’t believe she called me on that. She was right. I was being a hypocrite. I couldn't stand it.
