“Fayth, I have a feeling I’m going to be out late tonight. We’re still working with that L man, he’s so mysterious…I guess it keeps the job interesting, though. Anyways, if you need anything you know my cell phone number.” Sarah shouted down the hallway, trying to make sure Fayth heard every word. Fayth sighed as she heard the front door shut and lock.

“I need to figure this out…” Fayth said to no one in particular. She sat on the edge of the bed, her knees up to her chin; deep in thought. “If Kira can kill people without being there, that’s remarkable! But, how does he do it? It’s humanly impossible to have that kind of power. My best friend is a CSI; I should use that to my advantage, maybe trick her into telling me something about this Kira…or maybe just spy on her. No! What am I thinking? She’s my best friend; I can’t betray her like this. We’ve been best friends since I was 13. But Kira…I can’t let her get in the way of what Kira is doing, he’s doing good for the world and she just doesn’t understand that. Maybe I should convince her…NO! She’d surely never talk to me again if she knew.”

Fayth groaned as loud as she could, grabbing a pillow and slamming her face into it. “This is such a mess. All this pressure; I’m finally ending my years at high school and starting College at To-Oh after that…”

Sarah grabbed her bag, locked the car door and began fast walking into headquarters; she was late by at least thirty minutes. When she reached the room where most of the police were meeting, she snuck in as quietly as she could. But it was a failed attempt, everyone looked at her and Chief Yagami rolled his eyes at her actions. “This is the third time you’ve been late this week Sarah, what ARE you thinking exactly?”

“I’m sorry Mr. Yagami, I sort of lost track of time this morning when I was making breakfast…I’m sorry.” A blush crept on her face as she noticed everyone’s eyes were glued to her face, like they were awaiting her next move. Even L had stopped what he was saying, not to listen, he was more than likely annoyed with Sarah by now.

“Just sit down.” He replied, Sarah’s face turned redder and she took a seat next to Matsuda.

“You’re going to get fired if you keep on coming in late, Sarah!” He whispered furiously. “This is not the kind of case where you can just mosey on in whenever you feel like it, it’s KIRA!”

“I know, Matsuda.” Sarah sighed. “I just sort of-“

“Matsuda, Sarah, will you please shut up? You’re embarrassing me.” Mr. Yagami said sternly, mostly glaring in Sarah’s direction. Matsuda and Sarah exchanged looks, and began listening to what one of the task force members was saying.

“We’ve gathered that 47 criminals have been killed by heart attacks in the past few days. We also know that their criminal records have been available on the internet prior to the killings. There have been at least 200 registered deaths and another 50 unregistered deaths in the past week.”

“I see, thank you. Now, can someone please clarify the times these killings have been happening?”

Sarah’s eyes widened, she had totally forgotten to get her papers from her bag when she sat down. Chief Yagami gave Sarah a questioning look, expecting her to stand right away. She dug through her bag and Mr. Yagami gave an audible sigh of frustration. As she got the papers out of her bag and was getting ready to stand, Mr. Yagami got down to face level. “One more slip up and your name will be taken off this case.”

Sarah’s heart sank, but she stood disregarding the fact she felt extremely nervous. Because, sending information to the world’s greatest Detective is a bit intimidating.

“We’ve confirmed that the killings have been happening between the hours of 4 Pm and 2 Am Mondays through Thursdays and Fridays through Saturdays the killings have occurred between the hours of 4 Pm and 11 Pm” Sarah said through shaky lips, she then took a seat and awaited L’s reply.

“I see, Ms. McAllister, I believe?” L asked.

Sarah gave the computer a baffled look and replied with a quick “Yes.” How does he know my name?

“Right. On Mondays through Thursdays you’re completely sure that ALL of these killings have occurred between those exact hours?”

“Yes, sir.” She replied, nervousness hinted in her voice.

“That information is extremely relevant for us. It suggests that given the times of death, our suspect could very well be a student.” Gasps spread around the room, quiet whispers were spread also. “Based on the fact that Kira is only killing criminals, I think it's safe to assume that he's driven by a very idealistic notion of justice. It's highly possible that he may even aspire to be some sort of god-like figure. We're dealing with an individual who has a very childish concept of right and wrong.”

Sarah stood up again, not as nervous as she had been before. “What do you exactly mean by “God-like figure?” Are you saying he thinks he has some sort of righteous judgment?”

“That’s exactly what I mean, Ms. McAllister.” L replied.

Fayth sat on the couch and awaited the arrival of Sarah, she needed to pluck as much information as she could from her while remaining subtle about it, and making sure she doesn’t cross a line that may make Sarah believe Fayth is a Kira supporter.

While Fayth sat at home, staring at the clock, Sarah was being held up by Mr. Yagami.

“Sarah, may I have a word with you?” Mr. Yagami asked as politely as he could, he then looked over at Matsuda and Matsuda gave Sarah a look of sympathy, sure she was going to be dropped from the case. “Listen, you’re one of the best CSI’s I have. I don’t want to have to let you go but you are causing me a large amount of trouble right now. I had a word with L and he thinks the amount of information you’ve gathered and your assumptions of what is going on were both very impressive, it would be a shame to waste that talent on one of the most important cases in history. Understood? If you do not show up through that door at the right time, with your research in hand I will have to drop you and you will have to work on another minor case with a different leader.”

“Understood, Mr. Yagami.” She gave him a crestfallen look, fiddling with her hair as he walked away.

She began walking to her car when realization flooded through her brain; she had to drop Fayth off at the high school tomorrow. “I’m going to get dropped from the case.”

“Fayth, bad news.” Sarah sighed as she walked through the door, gently sitting herself down next to Fayth on the couch; who still had her eyes glued to the clock.

‘Maybe she’s going to leak some information about Kira to me…’

“I’m probably going to get dropped from the Kira case for coming in so late all the time, I have to take you to school tomorrow which makes it pretty evident that I’m going to go without a case for a while.” Sarah sighed, running her fingers through her hair.

“What happened?” Fayth asked, trying to seem as concerned as she could. Perfect! This is going too perfectly; I’m sure since she’s getting dropped from the case she will leak information to me.

“Well, for one I came in late and then when I was presenting my information I sort of forgot to take my papers of research out of my bag and Mr. Yagami said one more slip up and I’m out of the case. I tried to take notes on what L was saying to basically suck up to him…but that didn’t work too well.” It almost looked like Sarah was crying, which made Fayth frown and wonder to herself…What have I become?

She said she has research papers in her bag, and notes from L’s speeches. I’ll just wait until she goes to sleep, snatch the papers and voila! I’ll be in business.’
