You had been on the road for several hours. Kevin's status had stayed the same, and Joe, after a few hours of talking with you and Nick, had turned on his iPod and was now lost deep within “Joe world.” The sun was setting, and you and Nick were still talking. You were the closest in age, and so you could relate to him better. You both had a shared love of Elvis Costello, Sugar-free Red Bull, and competition.
Right now you were reminiscing about what life was like when you were younger. At that time, you and Nick hung out a lot, or so they say. According to your parents, you two were quite the little lovebirds. You blushed every time someone mentioned that. Neither of you remembered a lot from when you were little, but you were trying.
“Do you remember, when we went to the Statue of Liberty? And we went up to the crown? And then you looked down and almost died of fright?” Nick asked.
“I cannot believe you remember that!” you exclaimed. “That was so long ago. And heights are a perfectly rational fear.” you argued.
“Yeah, but it was still funny.” Nick smirked. It was a very sexy smirk.
“It was not! Me running down stairs in fear of my life is not funny Nicholas!”
“It is when you're an 8 year old boy!” Nick countered. At this you scoffed.
“Well, I seem to remember an 8 year old boy who was deathly afraid of spiders.” you reminded him.
“Oh, that is not fair!” So, I'm not allowed to go into your fears but you're allowed to go into mine?” he asked.
You tried to think of an appropriate response, however, words betrayed you and refused to come to you. You just shut your mouth and smirked at him.
He smirked back. Damn.
“Well, I was just defending myself.” you tried.
“If you fight fire with fire, all you get is a bigger fire, Katie.”
You hated it when he seemed smarter than you. He probably was, too. And because you couldn't think of anything better to do, you stuck your tongue out at him. He laughed at you, his smile was infectious. It made you blush.
“Charming.” he said, noting your tongue, making you giggle.
Your eyes locked with his. A soft smile spread across your face. You stayed that way for a long time until you both looked away simultaneously. Bushing like made, you yawned.
“Tired?” Nick asked.
“Hence the yawn.” you nodded.
“You wanna watch a movie now?” he asked. Nick had brought his laptop, although the battery wasn't going to last very long, so you had earlier decided to wait until you were both a little tired to fall asleep to a movie. You nodded in response to his question.
“Alright then, what would you like to watch?” he asked, getting out his laptop.
“Well, what did you bring?” you asked, peeking into his bag.
“Uhh, I brought Blades Of Glory, Dumb and Dumber, and Pirates of the Caribbean.”
“Pirates.” you said with certainty. You loved that movie, it just never got old.
Nick had gotten the laptop all set up and inserted the Pirates of the Caribbean disc.
“Alright now, how are we going to work this?”
Nick was referring to how the two of you were going to arrange yourselves so that you could both see the screen of the laptop.
“Hmm,” you hummed to yourself. He shifted slightly in his seat. When that didn't work, you slid over next to Nick in the center seat. He leaned against the door of the car and placed the laptop equally on both of your laps. You hooked up the headphones, put them in your ears and pushed play.
As the film went on, you progressively grew more and more tired. You eventfully gave in and laid your head on Nick's shoulder. It was around the time when the pirates cut Elizabeth's hand that you gently drifted into sleep.
