Complicated it was indeed. He explained to me that his doctor friend use to be a scientist and had a strange passion for werewolves in particular. For years he had secretly been working on the creation of a type of 'cure' for werewolves. Something to make them become fully human again. He had been testing his creations on real werewolves, and Nate was one of them. The first batch went completely wrong, and wound up killing more than five werewolves. The second wasn't the least bit successful, but at least it didn't kill anyone. From then on each batch improved significantly until more and more werewolves heard about what he was attempting and came to him seeking his aide. I looked at Nate, remembering the story he told me about the first night he turned into a full fledged werewolf. The night he murdered his best friends wife and ran away because he was scared. I knew now that he must still feel that guilt, and the painthat his friend must have felt.I could see the remorse in his eyes, he had never meant to wrong his friend, but becoming a werewolf changed him. I understood now how he must feel. What it meant to carry this curse always. What it must feel like to live with such a burden and such a deep feeling of regret and wrong doing. I found myself embracing him in my own arms as a means of showing my sympathy. We shared a moment of silence that seemed to have meant everything to him even if it was such a small gesture.
I tried to move along the akward silence by asking how the vial of liquid worked. He explained to me that you had to stick the needle in the exact same spot where you were 'bitten' in order for it to work. The pale blue liquid was quick to enter your blood stream, while the black swirly cloud-like strands buried their way down to where the werewolf's tooth that bit you resides. I stared at the small vial, slightly in awe of what it sounded capable of doing. "It...doesn't cure you of being a werewolf entirely yet though...hes still working on it day and night though to try and get it right..." I looked at him again with a currious look, if it didn't cure you of being a werewolf...then what did it really do? "When you use this stuff...you have to take it the night before the full moon. Even after the night of the full moon it will stay in your body a few days, but even if it lasts like that for more than just that night, it still well works for the most part. The thing about this is that it turns you into kinda...what I'd call half a werewolf. A kind of balance between your human form and your werewolf form if you will. Its not dreadfully noticable but you know you still have some features like the ears, and the tail...you know stuff like that. Stuff you could easily cover up and still go out in public in." I wondered what was so dangerous about being in your real werewolf state. "You see the first few times you transform into a werewolf are some of the worst times. Most of the time you don't even know what you're doing, nor do you remember what you did when you wake up in the morning. It's really dangerous both for you and to others. However, after you get kind of use to turning into one you regain your senses and have more of a feel and remembrance of what you do and did, but if someone sees you then they freak out and it's still pretty dangerous even like that." I wasn't sure what I would do about tomorrow night, or what might happen to me or to others. "Umm...Nate? Do you think...er if I took some of that, that it would you know...work for me too?" Nate looked at me with a weak smile that turned into a frown and shook his head no. "I'm sorry but it won't work for you until you've mastered being in your true werewolf state for awhile..." He gave me a sympathetic half hug and got up and walked back over to the small wooden chest.
I watched him quietly, still sitting on the edge of the bed. He placed the small vial back in the chest and then for the first time ever, I saw him unravel the red bandana he always had covering his right wrist...
