MIND GAMES (REVISED): A BATMAN AND ROBIN STORY
CHAPTER 2
“Let me live.”
You could hear talking, but you couldn’t respond. You were to tired to move, after a minute of listening to the world around you, you fell back into a deep sleep. You finally awoke to the sound of beeping monitors. You opened your eyes slowly. The darkness in the room helped with adjusting to having your eyes opened. You tried to sit up, but pain shot from your center of your body, and spread to the rest of your self. Stifling a scream of pain, you bit your lip, and tried again. You touched where the pain was coming from and hissed from the tenderness there. A lot more softly, you felt for the source of your pain. You found tight bandages were wrapped around your chest and torso. But you could feel the real pain came from the area right underneath your breast.
Suddenly the door opened to revile a nurse looking down at a clip board. She looked up and yelped, startled. “Oh my god!” She whispered. She rushed over to your side. “How do you feel sweetie?” She grabbed your hand.
“My body hurts. And I’m confused, what ha….” Before you could finish your sentence, it all came rushing back, and it hit you like someone smacked you, knocking the wind out of you. Tears were falling out of your eyes before you could stop them. The nurse was shocked at first, but you think she caught on. She hugged you lightly, it hurt slightly but you needed it. To feel, to feel anything else besides the pain you felt inside. You sobbed quietly. The nurse also cried, feeling your inner pain. She held you, but the Doctor suddenly chose that moment to take your vitals.
“Oh my, she is awake!” He said excited. The nurse lifted her head from your hair. She lifted your chin, to look at her. With her apron on her uniform, she wiped the tears that were streaming from your eyes. She dabbed at your eyes, trying to stifle the flow that seem like it would never end. But before long it did.
“Miss Michelson, may I speak with you out side?” He asked. She nodded and followed, looking back once. “WAIT!” You screamed, they jumped and looked back. “Who, who saved me, who brought me here?” You asked desperately, as if that was all you had to hold on to. The nurse smiled. “Batman, Batman brought you here Miss Bowden.” You looked at her in disbelief. She smiled warmly and followed the doctor out the door.
In the days that followed, you stayed in the hospital, waiting to be able to leave. Hoping every day, for the time you could go. Every night you dreamt of Batman, whose picture was cut from the paper and put in a frame for you; your hero. You wanted to meet him, thank him, but also plead with him to kill the man who murdered your mother and tried to do the same with you. At night they give you medication for the pain and to help you sleep, but you could swear you could see The Batman in your room, just looking at you from the window. Not in the creepy way, but as the protector.
Today was the 5th day you were contained to the hospital. Almost a week since you were brought here. (They still didn’t know of your powers *will explain about them later*)
You laid in bed. Eating some jello. The food here sucked, so you ate only when they watched, and jello when they weren’t around to argue, “You have to eat this-and you have to eat that-if you want to get better, blah blah blah.”
The door opened and the day nurse, whom you did not like, came in. “Miss Bowden, You have a visitor.” She said and in stepped…”Bruce!” you said smiling. He also smiled and came in, pulling a chair up to your bed. “How are you feeling?” He asked. “Fine for someone who broke 5 ribs, a gun shot to the chest, and for someone who almost died!” You said making light of a dark situation. He laughed along with you.
He and your mother worked together. Well she worked for him, and she was pretty far up on the totem pole. She did so well that she branched out on her own and created a chain of designer clothing stores. Bruce was very supportive and he was always nice to you and your mother, once he said she was one of the “most realest” of the people who worked for him.
He then go serious. “I’ve looked over your mother’s files while you have been in the hospital, naturally she left you everything, but the bad part is that you have no other relatives, both grandparents are dead, and your father when you were young.” He looked sad and sympathetic.
You thought for a moment, registering everything he just said. ~I’m going to be an orphan.~ “No, no, I can take care of myself!” You said shaking your head as though a bee were attacking you. “I’m sorry, but you are only 17, the court won’t allow someone at your age to live on her own. But don’t worry, I have a solution, I want you to live with me.” He said holding your hands. You looked at him confused.
“Can you do that?” He nodded. Your eye began to get watery, but you blinked them away. “Thank you so much!!!” You said hugging him. After a moment or two, you pulled away. “Bruce, can I tell you something?” He nodded. “You know the Batman right, like you know about him?” He smirked a bit, but you missed that because you were wringing your hands. “Would he ever kill someone? I mean, even if that person didn’t deserve to live?” You asked.
He looked as though he was thinking. “Well from what I have heard, he won’t kill any one. Maybe he believes everyone deserves a second chance, or at least has the right over their own life, or maybe the person under the mask needs to keep his sanity, and by killing someone, that would destroy him and all that he stands for.” He said looking at you. You looked up, you seen something, something written on his face, but just as quickly as you seen this expression, it was gone. “Well lets not worry about Batman, lets worry about the big move in. The doctors say that you should be able to leave by Thursday, with minimal movement and activities. And you should be off of bed rest by Monday.” He said changing the subject, for fear it would lead to your mother being dead and upset you.
After a little bit longer of talking, he was making his way to leave. “Bruce.” You said as he reached the door. “Do you believe that everyone has a secret?”
“Everyone has a secret identity Chris.” He replied back. “Bruce, what’s your secret identity?” You asked in response. He laughed. “If I told you, it wouldn’t be a secret, now would it?” He said and left…
Next time it will be in Bruce’s POV.
Hope you likey my worky! J
