Chapter 3 : You Know Everything But My Love {Edward Elric} Chapter Three
Wow. Not even I thought that I'd get this done so quickly! This is two days after I just got chapter 2 out! Kewl. :D Anywhos, on to chapter three! Nice and long, too ^-^ Jus' couldn't stop typing! Imma be typin' the next one tomorrow too, since my internet is gonna be down prob'ly for a few more days.. I'll explain more at the end.
"Hey, Dani, wake up. It's fifteen 'til ten... Dani... Daaaannniiiii.." Ed leaned over Danielle, poking her and pestering her until she finally moved. She grabbed his arm and bent it backwards, causing him to bite on his lip in pain. "Ow! Dani!" Her eyes shot open and she sat up, turning to Ed, who was holding his wrist and sniffling. "Whoops..." She scratched the back of her head as Ed bawled on the ground. "That's all you've got to say?! You could've broken my arm!" Danielle shrugged, "Sorry.. Maybe you shouldn't have been poking around at my face. Hey, at least I didn't break it.. Your crying woke me up before I could." "I wasn't crying! It's just a natural instinct for your eyes to water when something hurts!" "Does that come along with cries of pain and sniffling?" Ed glared at her, his lips pushed out angrily. Danielle laughed some and grabbed his arm, pulling his sleeve back. "Looks fine to me. You might get a little bruise, but it's not that bad. I can't believe you were crying over that." "I wasn't crying!" She laughed again and shrugged, "Okay, whatever.." "It hurts.." ( ToT = Ed's face :p ) She leaned over and kissed his wrist, "There. Better?"
Ed sniffed and nodded, "A little.." She grinned and rolled her eyes, chuckling. "Now that you're not crying as much: Have you eaten already?" He glared a her again, shaking his head. "No.. Al went ahead to grab us a booth while I woke you up... Next time he gets to do the waking, and I get to go eat earlier." She grinned and nodded, grabbing her bag and pulling her clothes out of it. "Give me a minute to change." He stepped out, closing the door and leaning on it. After a few minutes, the door came open and Ed tripped. Luckily, the wall of his and Al's cab was in the way, so he just ended up hitting it. "Ed, you're really clumsy.." Ed's head got red as he turned to Danielle. "Me?! You're the one hurt my wrist and opened the door on me!" She sighed and rolled her eyes at him, "You've really gotta suck up the fact that you just put yourself in situations where you're gonna get hurt." He growled and Danielle covered his mouth as he ranted for a moment. She moved her hand when he finished and pat his head, "Done?" He sighed and nodded. She smiled lightly, "Good. Now come on."
She grabbed his hand and pulled him down the isles, pulling the hairbow wrapped around the end of her braid and pulling it apart. She slowed down and let go of his hand, confident that he was finally following willingly. She wrapped the bow around her wrist and finished undoing her braid, pulling the second hairbow from the top and wrapping it around her wrist as well. She shook her head and pushed her hair back with her hand, messing around with it a bit until she finally stopped, using both her hands to push her hair behind both her ears. Ed watched in a sort of trance. It was kind of... Interesting. Heh. He coughed and continued walking, scratching the back of his head. Once they finally reached the dining area through the next door, they turned to one nearest to find Al sitting there. Danielle grinned and shook her head as she sat down in the booth seat across from Al. Ed sat down next to Al, who cocked his head to the side. "What took you two so long? And what's so funny, Danielle?"
Danielle looked to Al, still grinning. "You're just as polite as you used to be.. You've seriously been sitting here waiting for us this whole time? And you didn't get a thing to eat while you were waiting?" He nodded, "Of course.. It's polite to wait until everyone is seated before eating." She giggled some and leaned forward, kissing Al on the cheek. "Thanks, Al. Very courteous of you." He blushed and looked at Ed, who glared at him light enough that only Al could tell. Alphonse shrugged and looked down, putting his hand on the back of his neck. Danielle raised her brow at the two, smiling lightly. She looked to her left at the empty isle before sliding out and moving towards the front of the cabin. She turned to the Elric brothers and motioned for them to come with her, "Well, come on, guys. The food's not gonna get itself to us on it's own." They nodded and got up, following her to the large selection of food at the front.
Ed's mouth watered, and Danielle laughed at him. "Grab whatever you want, just don't eat everything. There's gotta be food for everyone else." "Aw, but I want EVERYTHING." Ed hugged all the food, jumping around from place to place, trying to figure out what he wanted to eat first. Danielle and Al laughed at him, grabbing plates and placing some random foods on them. After dragging Ed back to the table with his multiple plates drowned in food, they sat down and ate. Ed went at his food like the animal he could be. Danielle spent the whole time laughing and throwing rolls and things at him until he finally finished and their food fight ended. They walked back to their cabs, laughing and carrying Ed all the way there because he was so full. It took five minutes just to get him through the door >-< After Ed was finally seated and waiting to digest all of the food he ate, Danielle went to the bathroom. She finished brushing her teeth and looked down at her arms, sighing. She shook her head and put her jacket back on before walking out and allowing Al to brush his teeth.
Danielle walked over to Ed and Al's cab and knocked on the door before opening it. "You ready? The train'll be there in five to ten minutes." Ed looked around the cab and then to his bag, nodding. "Yeah, I think so.. You?" Danielle held her bag up, leaning against the door frame. "Yup. Al'll be done in a minute.." Ed nodded once more, grabbing his bag and putting it on his back. "Hey, Dani?" "Hm?" "You haven't told us anything about the town we're supposed to go to. I mean, aside from the fact that you've been there a lot." He sat down, patting the seat next to him. Danielle sighed and sat next to him, putting her bag down on her other side. "What's up with you and this place?" Ed asked, putting his hand on her shoulder. She looked at the empty seat in front of them, trying to keep their eyes from meeting. "After I killed my mother, I went to Nishimachi because I'd been there before on jobs when I was an assassin.. It's basically a town of assassins. It's where they go in and out to reach their destinations. There are even guilds for assassins there..
"I got caught up with some bad people, and I got back into the assassin business-" "After all that happened, you still went back to it?" Ed sounded rather disappointed when he spoke. "You don't get it, Ed.. I was alone and I had nothing else to do. I had to survive. So I did the only thing I knew how to do. Despite anyone else's disagreement with it, including yours, even today I still believe that most assassin work is for the better good. You just have to know which assassins are fighting with truly good intentions, and who's killing just for revenge or fun.. I'm practically an assassin for the military now as well... I kill people who only want to cause pain and suffering. Those who do wrong and are wrong.. For the greater good... Although stereotypes tend to get us noticed for a wrong-doing in other people's eyes. We're not just killing for money or loyalty, but for the safety of the people." Ed looked down, nodding lightly. "You don't have to agree with my methods or beliefs, Ed. But you do have to respect the fact that I DO believe in them, even though you don't."
He nodded again, looking up, "We're not all that different, you know.. Assassins and military members. I mean, assassins' targets are more pinpointed to specific people, but they both kill for the greater good..." Danielle looked at Ed, smiling lightly, "Glad you see that we're not so different and evil after all." He turned toward her and hugged her, much to Danielle's surprise. "Uh, Ed?" "Yeah?" He asked, still hugging her. "Why are you hugging me?" He pulled away, scratching the back of his head. "I dunno. Just felt like it?" They sat silently for a moment before breaking out in a slight laughter. "What are you guys laughing about?" Ed and Dani stopped, looking towards the door, where Al was standing. "Nothin', Al.. You ready?" Ed asked as he got up, pulling Danielle with him. Alphonse raised his brow at the two and nodded, "Yep." He grabbed his bag and put it over his arm. Edward walked out into the isle, heading to brush his teeth.
Ed walked back into the cab just as the train stopped, getting knocked into the booth. He rubbed his head and looked at Al and Danielle, who were trying extremely hard to hold in their laughter at the large red bump on Ed's head. After a few seconds, they broke out, no longer able to hold it all in. "S-Sorry, brother.. B-but it's just s-so f-funny!" Al managed to get that much out through his tears. They finally stopped and Danielle wiped her eyes from where she'd laughed so hard. "Perk up, Ed. At least you're cute when you're angry." Dani pointed out as she got up with Al. "Well, let's just hope there is a girl tolerant enough of you to think that." She giggled as he got up behind them, his head fuming and his lips puffed out again. The train had now come to a complete halt and they got out, looking around at what few passengers there were.
They looked around and Danielle sighed. "Well, home sweet home, I guess." "Sweet? This place is about as sweet as salt water." Ed proclaimed as he scanned the town of Nishimachi. It was a rather... Grey place. Despite it's apparent reputation for being a town of assassins, it was packed full of people. They were all pretty shady characters, and what few homeless people there were were scattered in small areas. It seemed that they wanted to keep out of the way of all the others walking the streets, in fear that they might get killed or seriously injured.. Which meant that this town was pretty harsh, and not to be messed with by outsiders. Ed turned around to Al hiding behind him. "Al, what are you doing?" "Brother, this place gives me the creeps." "Me too, Al.." He looked over at Danielle, who smiled some as she looked over the buildings. "Hey, Dani?" "Hm?" She stayed entranced by the town, sighing. "Uh, you wanna show us the way around this place now?" She nodded, finally turning to Ed and Al. "Sorry. Just missed this place, that's all." Ed shivered. How she could miss a place, more like a dump, like this was beyond his imagination.
Danielle pulled one of the straps of her bag over her arm, making sure that the small lock on it was secured. She led Ed and Al through the town to a building a little bigger than the others. She opened the door and walked towards the tall desk on the right. They were in a small.. Hotel? Dani finished talking to the man behind the counter and walked over to the boys, who were checking out their new surroundings. "Guys, I'd like you to meet someone." The man from behind the desk walked out and stood next to Danielle. He was a little taller than Dani, with a short-sleeved black shirt on and some simple black pants. He was bald, aside from some hair on the sides of his head and around the back. By his looks, he was in his late forties. He had a little bit of a larger waistline, but aside from that, you could tell he was still pretty strong. You'd assume that everyone in this place had to have enough strength to live here. "This is Rob. He's the founder and manager here. Rob, this is Edward and Alphonse Elric." She pointed both the boys out to Rob, who shook both their hands with a smile on his face.
"Before I met Colonel Mustang, I lived here. Rob took me in and I worked here as payment for food and a home.. He and Jack are my family. Speaking of Jack, where is he?" Danielle turned to Rob. "He's in the back cooking, darlin'." He smiled at her. She thanked him, kissing him on the cheek and hurrying into the kitchen behind the counter. "So, I trust you boys have been taking good care of my girl?" Ed nodded, "But she's sure got a weird way of not taking care of us.. She almost broke my wrist." He joked, scratching the back of his head. Rob laughed and shook his head, "You tried waking her up, didn't ya, boy?" Danielle walked back out of the kitchen, dragging a man who looked to be in his twenties behind her. His hair was brown and messy, and he wore a white apron over his jeans and dark green t-shirt. He wrapped the apron around his waist, wiping his hands on it. He was built nicely, and his face was rather masculine. It made one wander how a guy like him ended up here.. "And this is Jack. Edward and Alphonse." She pointed the boys out again to Jack, who smiled lightly and shook their hands.
"He's like my older brother.. I met him here too. He's been working for Rob for a long time." "Hey, I'm not old enough to consider my working here as a long time." He elbowed her in the arms and she grinned at him, rolling her eyes. "We're going to go up to my room and settle in, guys. Sorry to pop in so suddenly like this, but Colonel Mustang kind of sent us here on a sudden whim too." She kissed Rob and Jack on their cheeks before Rob spoke, "No trouble, darlin'. You know you're always welcome here, no matter of the time or reasoning." "We do love getting visits from you, y'know." Jack added. She smiled and pulled Ed and Al towards the stairs. "Oh, and Dawn is a little cranky today, darlin'. You might wanna bring her a little treat when ya go up." Danielle nodded and sneaked(proper grammar, folks. Not 'snuck', but 'sneaked' weird-soundin', huh? >-< ) into the kitchen, returning with a small box. She pulled Ed and Al up the stairs, waving to Rob and Jack.
"Who's Dawn?" Al asked after they got to the top of the stairs. "You'll see." Danielle smiled as she turned to the first door on their right. She unlocked it and walked in, sitting down on her knees a few feet from the door. "What are you do-" Ed started to ask when a small black cat ran out from under the bed and into Danielle's lap. It purred loudly as Danielle rubbed it's stomach, kissing it's head. "Boys, this is Dawn. I've had her for a couple years now." Al waved at the cat, smiling. "She's cute." Ed reached forward to pat her on the head, and she hissed at his hand. His eye twitched, "More like Spike or Fido, if ya ask me." "Ed, don't be so mean.. She just doesn't know you, that's all. She'll learn to like you." "Yeah, right after she removes my hand." He mumbled under his breath. Danielle glared at him and he gave her a large fake smile. She rolled her eyes at him and opened the box she had taken from the kitchen, putting it on the floor in front of Dawn. The cat nibbled on the small pieces of meat and licked at the milk in the other side.
Danielle pat her head as she purred happily. She took her bag off her back and put it on the couch on the wall across from the door. There was a window above it, and the bed was on the wall to one's right once you entered the room. There was a closet on the bed's left side, so that it made a small sort of hall where the door was. The bathroom was to the left, and it's door was on the only other side of it that showed, which faced the kitchen. With just a few steps, you could get from the couch to the kitchen.. There was a small table with four chairs around it, a long section of counter, with a stove in the middle of it, which all faced the wall the bed was on. Across from the stove and microwave one counter-space away from it was another set of counter halfway across the kitchen, just as the side with the stove was. The sink was between the two, on the same wall the couch was. A large window sat above it, a little fogged from rain the past few years. It was a rather homely place, despite how small it might have looked from outside.
Ed put his bag on the bed and sat next to Danielle on the couch. "So, what now?" "Well, we can either sit here in the silence, or we can get straight to work: We can ask around in the right areas about any funny things going on. And then we'll meet back here after about an hour or so. Then we'll discuss what we've learned and figure out what's going on around here.. After, we'll get something to eat and we'll figure out what to do with what time is left." Ed nodded, "Nice plan. Did you come up with that just now?" Danielle smiled, "Yup, I guess so. You guys can go to the west part of town, that's the best place to go to find semi-regular people.. Plenty of women and children there, and simple men who are just here because there's no where else to go or they're held back for certain other reasons. Not many assassins hang out around there. I'll check elsewhere. Since I know the place pretty much exactly, I'll go a lot faster and get a lot of stuff done." They nodded and stepped out into the streets, separating after Danielle explained a basic layout of west Nishimachi.
