Chapter 17 : [17] Just Another Pretty Face [Jacob Black] But I Want One More Taste [17]

-Chapter 17-
“Are you Ok?” Jacob asked for about the 50th time.
“I’m fine, it’ll go away soon enough. You don’t have to worry so much,” I groaned. I knew he was just worried and I didn’t want to freak out on him, but it was getting so hard. As much as I tried to act like I wasn’t feeling sick, he saw right through me.
There was a long moment of silence. I smiled, knowing I successfully got rid of the subject for now. He had something else on his mind.
“You’ve got your thinking face on, what's up?” I asked.
“Bella called last night. She really wants to meet you.”
“I don’t have a problem with it,” I shrugged.
“You're not going anywhere in this condition.”
“I just told you, I’ll be perfectly fine. No need to be so overprotective,” I smiled, kissing his cheek.
“She wants us to go up there tonight. You're sure you’ll be fine?”
“Of course.”
“Fine, but this is going to be awkward. What if she doesn’t like you?”
“What if she doesn’t? You're not going to freak out on me or anything, are you?”
“What? Never,” he promised.
I sighed, “I know you feel like you need her approval, but I’ll be here no matter what.”
The door opened and Mattie walked in carrying a bag from the drug store, “If you don’t mind, Fai, I'd like to talk to you alone.”
I shot up, following her to my room. After the door was shut behind me, I turned to her “Is this what I think it is?”
She nodded, pulling the pregnancy test out of the bag. I took a deep breath, not sure if I wanted to know.
She hugged me, “You’ll be Ok. I’ll be here no matter what the results are."
“I know, its not you that I'm worried about.”
“Honey, he’s nothing like your father,” she smiled in encouragement, handing me the test.
I took another deep breath, going into the bathroom. Mattie smiled when I walked back out, “Now for the longest wait of your life.”
I groaned, pacing back and fourth. There was a knock on the door and I looked up, “Fai, are you Ok?”
“I’m fine,” I lied, but my strained voice gave me away.
The door creaked open and I ran up to Jacob, throwing my arms around him. My face buried into his chest while tears started rolling down my face. He rubbed my back softly, whispering that it was going to be Ok. When he had me calmed down some, he looked over at Mattie, “What's wrong with…”
He trailed off, completely freezing. I glanced up at him, following has gaze to the box the pregnancy test came in. A fresh wave of tears took over, this time border-lining hysterics. His arms tightened and he kissed my hair, “Is this what you haven’t been telling me?”
I nodded.
He hugged me so tight, I could barely breathe, “That’s great, well compared to everything else I've been dreaming up. You had me so worried when you wouldn’t talk about it, I thought I did something.”
I stared, dazed, “You're not leaving me if I am?”
He laughed like I just told a really funny joke, “That’s not even an option. Ever.”
My lips were on his in an instant, until Mattie coughed from behind us, “Times up.”
I grabbed Jacob’s hand, squeezing the hell out of it. Now that I was sure he wasn’t going to leave me, the results didn’t seem quite as scary. It was only varying degrees of awful, though. I walked into the bathroom, inching closer to the test until I saw it. One little line signaling negative. It was the most beautiful line I’ve seen in my life.
My arms flew around Jacob at a speed that shouldn’t be possible, “Oh gosh. I so wasn’t ready for that. Don’t you ever do that to me again, at least not any time soon.”
He laughed, clearly as relieved as I was, “I’m just happy you're not being so distant anymore. That scared me.”
“What does it say?” Mattie asked, poking her head in.
“I'm not pregnant.”
She smiled, “That’s nice.”
“Ya think?” I said sarcastically. She winked at me before disappearing into her room.
I moved my arms around Jacob’s neck and kissed him. He lifted me up and placed me on the counter without breaking contact with my lips. My legs wrapped around him, pulling myself closer.
He pulled away, leaning his forehead against mine, “Not that I wouldn’t be happy if you were, but I'm kind of glad you aren’t. Neither one of us is ready for kids.”
“Are you kidding me? Half the time we act like two year olds. I don’t have any idea how Mattie did it, and at 14? That woman is crazy.”
He smiled, “You don’t think you’d make an alright mother?”
“I can't cook anything that doesn’t require a microwave. I have a pretty short temper. I can barely keep up with myself, anyone else depending on me is screwed. Did I mention my power to make small children cry just by looking at them?” I counted them off on my fingers.
He laughed at my ranting, pulling me into a hug with my face buried into his neck, “I guess we got lucky then.”
“You have no idea,” I mumbled.
