Chapter One

“They’re coming.” The lady whispers to me. She glows so brightly I have to look away. My thoughts are foggy and confusion makes my head spin.

Who is coming? How did I get here? Where exactly was here? I want to ask these things but my mouth feels heavy. She takes a step towards me and I pull back slightly mystified. What was going on?

“They’re coming.” She says again.

Who is coming? The question burns my throat but I cannot voice it. Her silver hair floats around her like a shining halo. Her eyes, the same silver color as the light that surrounds her, glow steadily. She reaches out and gently touches my cheek. “The truth is in you.” She grabs my hand and holds it up. The bright blue veins are easily seen through the thin skin of my wrist. Her fingers gently graze over the veins and just like her they begin to glow. I watch numbly, trying to make sense of what is happening, but I can’t think. And then she drops my hand, which falls limply into my lap.

“Be safe my child.” She kisses my forehead and then slowly floats away.

Taking the light with her.

“Wait come back!” I manage to cry out. But my voice is so small and my words get lost.
Darkness surrounds me on all sides. I am crying now as I desperately look around me, but all I can see is never ending blackness. I pull my legs to my chest and hug my knees.

Where the hell was I?

Something growls and I freeze. I slowly lift my head up and see emerging from the darkness a pair of red eyes. They lock on me and I struggle to stand up and run but somehow I can’t move. I bury my face in my knees, sobbing.

I look up in time to hear the creature snarl and see the blood eyes lunge for me. I scream and close my eyes, wanting this to end quickly.

Nothing happens.

Confused, I cautiously look up, but I don’t see the blood eyes nor do I hear the beast.

I feel something move by me and I jump.

I stare at the man who is suddenly lying at my feet, face down. He groans and lifts his head. His black hair frames a face cast in shadow; all I can see are green eyes, eyes that seem to pull me towards them. Slowly he reaches a hand out towards me. “Help me.” he pleads.

Against my own will my hand reaches for his. Just as our fingers touch I hear the growling and suddenly the blood eyes are above the man. “Please” he whispers. Then before I can do or say anything the creature attacks him.

He thrashes and screams as the monster drags him into the darkness.

Beep beep beep.

I watch in horror my hand still extended.

Beep beep beep.

His screaming echo’s in the darkness

Beep beep beep beep beeeppppp

The sunlight burns again my closed eyelids. Without opening my eyes I reach over and turn my alarm off then bury my head in my pillow and groan.

I really needed to get a new dream.

“What are you guys looking at?” I ask twenty minutes later as I come down the stairs. Tracy and Lizzie are gathered around the window that looks out onto the street.

“Look look look!” Tracy whispers excitedly gesturing frantically for me to come over.

I peek out the window and see an out of state U-Haul truck parked on the curb across the street. “Does this mean we have new neighbors?” I ask, raising an eyebrow. Lizzie gives me a wicked grin and I know what this means. “Well come on tell me,” I laugh bumping her with my hip, “What does he look like?”

She wiggles her eyebrows, “A prince of darkness.” I laugh harder.

“Several princes of darkness, actually.” Tracy informs looking out again. All three of us crowd around the window. Lizzie whistles as two boys who are obviously brothers brings a couch out of the truck and set it on the front lawn.

“Oh, Tracy those two seem to be your age. Which one, which one?” Lizzie teases. Tracy starts to turn pink.

I look back up and my heart stops. “Oh, shit!” I reach over and quickly pull the curtain shut.

“Sabine, what’s wrong? What is it?” Lizzie whispers.

“There was a guy standing in the doorway over there. I think he saw us.” I snort quietly with laughter. Lizzie and Tracy giggle. Slowly I reach over and lift the corner of the curtain and look out. The guy is still standing in the doorway staring over here. He is mostly in shadows so it made it hard to tell what he looked like. It seems like he is looking directly at me but I knew it was impossible for him to see me.

“That’s the prince of darkness.” Lizzie peeks out from the other side of the curtain.

“I’ll say.” I frown as he suddenly turns and walks into the house. Inside the house it’s dark and then suddenly out of no where I see a pair of glowing red eyes floating in the door way. I rub at my eyes and blink, but they are gone.

“Let’s go get some breakfast,” Lizzie says and leaves. Tracy follows. I hesitate staring at the doorway again.

They’re coming.

I let the curtain flutter close and slowly trail behind them to the kitchen.
