"To put your hands in a river is to feel the chords that bind the earth together."
- Barry Lopez
"Oh she's teething Peter, let's get her some ice-cream”Lillian suggest holding a one year old baby as her husband slung a jacket over himself and his wife.
"Fine, we'll drive”He stated as they shuffled out into the light rain and into the car.
" Don't worry Maxi, mama is going to help your gums”Lillian cooed to her daughter as her husband drove carefully.
" She's going to be so beautiful when she grows up" Peter whispered as Lillian's face broke into a smile.
" Yeah, she's going to bring home all the boys"
Peter snorted " Over my dead body"
Lillian laughed " Don't even make me start mister"
Peter laughed along and stole a quick glance at his wife and his daughter Maxine.
A quick glance was all it took.
"Look out!" Lillian screamed her maternal instincts kicking in as she shielded Maxine from any harm.
" Sir, the couple died instantly from the impact”The policeman informed his superior as they glanced over at the written off car with it's front clearly smashed in. The ambulance crew along with the fireman ran around the scene, simply seeing a young couple gripped in a final embrace.
An ambulance officer thought differently…
" Quick, get some blankets!" A hurried voice called from the car and across the scene, as he seemed to be struggling with something.
The lieutenant quickly walked over and stood behind his officer and suddenly found a warm bundle in his arms.
Peeling back the blankets The lieutenant felt his heart drop yet beat with delight as a pair of brilliant blue eyes gazed at him with utter serenity, pushing the blankets out of the child's face a thick strand of dark blue hair made itself known.
" I'm sorry little one, your the only one left" His voice didn't even to attempt to hide the regret that this child had lost it's parents.
The water kept swirling and rippling, and Maxine's eyes continued to gaze oblivious to the tragedy that had taken place.
