“Tulia,” he purred. “It’s not nice to talk about people behind their backs.” He sounded calm enough, but his eyes said differently.

Tulia began to physically quiver. “I-I have to g-g-go find my next class. I’ll see you later, Sh-Shanti…M-Myra.” Poor girl, she could barely get a sentence out.

“Wait, Tulia, Shanti’ll go with you.” I intoned. Shanti got the hint, and walked with her. I saw her half trying to sooth Tulia, half trying to get information out of her.

Prick plopped down next to me, as if it was the most natural thing in the world. I wheeled around and stared fiercely at him. “What the hell’s your problem? What, do you have some kind of asshole disease that just makes people naturally hate you?” He ignored me, and proceeded to pick the grapes off my plate. I slapped away his hand.

“I’m talking to you!”

In the flash of a second, he had my wrist in his hand, my chin in the other. He forced my face up, so I had no choice but to look in those swimming eyes. They were the dark silver of the heaviest rainclouds. His eyes held anger, and what looked like excitement.

“That’s exactly the way I need you. Defiant, angry, strong.” He moved his face in closer to me, the same time his grip loosened on me.

I decked him right in his jaw.

He spun off the bench and onto the grass.

“Zach!” shrieked F-Cup. She came over to help him up, but he pushed her away.

“Keep to your own, Cyn. I’ve no time for you.” She looked wounded, but then she turned on me.

“How DARE you touch him!” She got right in my face, noses touching.

Stay calm, stay calm. Don’t break her little neck. “I wouldn’t have touched him if he didn’t touch me first,” I replied through clenched teeth. “Please…get the FUCK…out of my FACE.”

“Or what?” She sneered, perfect little nails on her hips.

I punched her in the face. There was a sickening (yet satisfying) cracking noise as I broke her nose. I stood there, looking down at her, my fist tingling slightly from the blow.

It felt good.

“Or that.” I replied, looking down at her.

“BITCH!”she screeched, clutching her nose. A steady stream of blood began to flow from behind her hand.

“Cyn!” Nowak jumped up and came running over. He glared at me while helping Cyn up.

“What the fuck, Myra?” he mumbled.

I shrugged. “She had it coming.”

Most of the new kids were watching in excitement. The ones from the school seemed halfway interested, but since it was me, they weren’t too surprised. This was normal, even for the first day of school.

“Don’t touch me!” Cyn screamed as she shoved Nowak off of her. “I’m going to kill you!”

She advanced towards me, face bloody and madness in her eyes. She did look like a worthy opponent, and I crouched in excitement. It’d been a while since I’d had a good fight.

“Enough!” boomed the Prick. Cyn halted, and stared at him in wide eyed disbelief.

“Zach! She-“

“I told you to keep to your own. Go get yourself cleaned up. You’re embarrassing.” His voice was cold as he turned his back on her and walked towards me.

Cyn shrieked like a banshee in frustration. She stomped off (to the nurses office I assume) Nowak scrambling after her.

People made way from her, and began talking excitedly to each other.

“MYRA!!!” came a roar from the other side of the courtyard.

Shit.

I knew that voice.

The crowd that had gathered began to dissipate, one, because lunch was over, and two, because that voice belonged to my most favorite person next to Satan.

Mr. Gary Kipling, assistant principal and certified pain in my ass.

What was that?He pointed in direction Cyn went. His purple face was set in a scowl of anger.

“I couldn’t tell you sir. I was minding my own business.” This guy would give nothing more than to get me in trouble. If Kipling had seen what had happened, I’d most likely be expelled just because he hated me.

“Don’t give me that! She just happens to come from your direction with a bloody nose?”

Well, isn’t he the little detective. I was about to show him where he could shove his next clue when Prick stepped in.

“That’s my fault, sir. I tripped and collided with Ms. Xipil. I apologized and offered to escort her to the nurse’s, but Myra insisted that I stay and wait here, so Ms. Xipil may be given full attention. I sent Derek Nowak in my stead.”

I tried not to let my mouth hang open, and looked as natural as possible.

Holy Mother, did Prick just cover for me?

Kipling looked like he suspected something, but since it came from Zach and not me, he seemed to buy it.

“Very well. Get to your next class. Myra, we’ll discuss your hair color later.”

Of course he had to mention the hair color somewhere. He turned on his heels and walked away. I always thought he walked like someone shoved a pole up his ass.

When he was out of earshot, I turned to tell the Prick thank you, and then stopped. He was right next to me. I was frozen. He had grabbed a handful of my hair and buried his face in it. “I don’t understand what he’s so angry about. I like this shade, though the brown was cute on you too.” He seemed to remember himself and let go of my hair.

“I should be going. Oh, good job on Xipil.”

That comment surprised me. Weren’t they friends?

Before he got too far, I called out to him.

“Pri-, I mean, Zach.” He turned. “Why did you cover for me?” I appreciated the gesture, but I didn’t like being indebted to people.

He smirked. “I want to keep you strong, not caged.”

He disappeared into the school. The tardy bell rang. I rushed to my next class, showed the teacher a fake pass, and sat down. I gazed off into space, twirling my hair around my fingers and thinking about what Prick had said.

Wait. My hair. I had been changing my hair color ever since I could remember. Shanti had even forgotten my original color.

So if Prick had only started coming here this year, how did he know what my natural hair color was?
