"Thorn..." I thought dreamingly as I swayed home and up the steps to my doorway. I grabbed the knob and turned it, then was snapped out of my fantasy: Chase had kicked me out of my house. I began pounding my fists on the door, screaming Chase's name over and over again until he unlocked the door and opened it.
"Hola! Como es-?" I interrupted him with a heavy punch to his stomach. He fell forward onto the pavement as I slammed my door shut behind him. I listened to him whine for a moment, then opened my door and let him in.
"SO?! What happened?!" he questioned in excitement. If he was a dog, he'd be wagging his tail in excitement. I laughed to myself as I pictured Chase sitting on my floor, begging with puppy dog ears, paws, and a tail.
"TELL ME!"
Snap. Back to reality. I sighed and flopped down on my couch. He sat across from me and beamed, as if we were two girls about to gossip about the hot new guy in town. Heh...I wonder what that would be like?
I'd sit across from Chase in a tight black leather mini skirt and a red halter top, one leg hoisted over the other as I clutched a handbag tightly in my grasp. Chase would have caked on makeup and a little black dress, with thigh high, white stripper boots.
"So, like, tell me everything girly!" he'd coo flashing his hand and showing off his freshly painted poofy pink nails. I'd uncross my legs and slam my hands on the tops of my knees.
"Like, O.M.G.! I like, saw him tonight." I'd say with an upward effect, "And, he told me his name was Thorn!" Then we'd both squee like mindless blondes. He'd grasp my hands and we'd jump up and down like mindless idiots.
"DUDE! TELL ME ALREADY!" he yelled opening a can of my soda with his legs uncrossed. I snickered; like we could ever pass for dumb blondes?! HAH!
"Alright. I realized...I didn't even know the dude's name! And I was already half way to town. So I turned around and decided to go chill at the kindergarten playground. Then out of nowhere, he shows up and we start to talk. And he said his name was Thorn." I blurted out, cleverly masking my excitement! Or so I thought...
"Well, Thorn huh? Kinda...sexy name...yea?" Chase snickered with a seductive smiled. I laughed.
"That's what I thought." We both laughed about that one for a while then sighed. I looked outside and then at the clock: 11:00 p.m.. I frowned; why was Chase still here?
"Umm...Chase? You not going home tonight...?" I asked with a frown. Chase froze, a frown appearing across his face. He shook it off and grinned.
"Nah...M...my parents aren't in a good mood so...I'm going to crash at Jakey's tonight." he said forcing his smile. I forced a smile as well.
"Oh...okay. Well, if you ever need another place to spend the night, I'm here for you man. O.K.?"
"O.K.!" he echoed back to me. "Well, I better head to Jake's now. I'll see you later." he said standing up and opening the door.
"Later." I shouted as I watched him slowly pull the door closed behind him. My false smile faded. Chase had had family problems for as long as I've known him. When we were 12, he got sent to the hospital for an 'accident'...but it wasn't an accident.
~Flashback~
I ran up the hospital steps, because the elevator would've been too slow. I burst through the hospital room door and flew to Chase's bedside, tears spilling from my eyes. I knelt down on my kness when I saw him sitting up...and alive. Chase looked at me, covered in bandages and scratches. He just smiled and patted my head.
"Hey buddy. Nice of you to visit." he snickered. I looked up at him in disbelief. "Boy am I a clumsy little fuck or what? Can you believe I got hit by a car?" he laughed. I shook my head and hugged him tightly. He winced from the soreness, then chuckled. "What's wrong with you?" he asked.
"NO! What's wrong with you?!" I yelled looking him in the eyes. His eyes widened and I saw a shimmer of sadness flash in his eyes. "You know DAMN WELL this was no accident!"
"Well...I probably deserved it...I mean...I got on his nerves so-"
"NO! DON'T YOU DARE!" I screamed slapping his hand. Chase flinched and looked at me, now him the one, in disbelief. "Don't you ever think you deserve something like this! NO ONE DOES! You're a good person, so STOP TRYING TO SAY ITS ALL YOUR FAULT!" I ordered. Tears welled in his eyes.
"What are you...t...talking..." he tried to say, before he plunged his head into my chest. I wrapped my arms around his back and held him. He belted out in loud, heart-piercing sobs.
~End Flashback~
That was the first time I had ever seen Chase cry. I felt bad, but how could I possibly know what he was going through? My parents were never home when I was growing up, which I guess isn't that bad...Sure I never got to go to the park with my dad and play catch, go grocery shopping with my mom, or got tucked in at night. But at least I never got abused. If something like that happened to me, I don't know if I could be like Chase and just keep smiling. Whenever I asked him why he never frowned...he always said the same thing: "Hee! It's no big deal! I still got meh friends, don't I?! What more do I need, man?!" Chase was amazing; end of story.
I shook myself out of the past and walked up to my bedroom. I looked out at the moon and smiled. Two bats flew across the path of the moon. I tilted my head to the side and narrowed my eyes.
"Why are there so many bats out lately...?" I thought to myself as I rested my head in my pillow and drifted off to sleep.
~~~~~Thorn's Part~~~~~
Thorn stood outside an abandoned warehouse and listened as music pulsed inside, Mace standing at his side. Mace knocked on the door; the door opened and a huge bald man with a dragon tatoo wrapped around his body answered. Piercings lined his lip, ears, and eyebrows as he sported his black ensomble. He scowled.
"Who the hell is-?!" he started, but stopped as he looked at Thorn. "My lord..." he stated in wonder as he stood aside and opened the door. "Please, come in sir!" Thorn smiled.
"That's okay, Rocco. We have a meeting." he said stepping in with Mace. The sounds of pulsing heavy metal music filled the warehouse as hundreds of teen goths danced, sipped from pewter goblets, and necked in the club's corners. Mace followed behind Thorn closely as he made his way to a back room. Thorn polled out a key with skulls on it, and opened the door.
Inside was an array of coffins, fresh dirt splattered in a circle around them. A circular couch was in the center, a box laying on the small table in the middle. Thorn shook his head and sat down on the couch.
"Lazy ass wholes..." he muttered as the lids to all the coffins flew open. A girl stepped out of one of the coffins and yawned.
"Ugh...Thorn...your too early...! It's just midnight now!" she stretched her arms toward the sky. She was wearing a black and red old time victorian dress, her long silky blonde hair flowing over her pale white skin. She licked her black lips and grinned. "I could use a drink right about now..." A guy stepped out of a coffin next to her and rolled his brown eyes. He was wearing a HIM band tee and tight faded jeans, a studded belt crossing his lower half.
"For the love of hell, you just had a drink before bed, Aurora!" he barked holding his head like he had a hangover.
"Shut it, Poison! I have a condition!!! I'm anemic." Aurora argued.
"Anemic schmemic! You g'damned blood-happy vamp!" Poison screeched plopping down next to Thorn. Several other beings emerged from their coffins and sat on the couch. The last one to sit sighed and flipped his ice blue hair out of his face, exposing his white eyes. He glared at the two arguing teens and sat down.
"Aurora! Poison! Shut up for once! This is a meeting here!" he pointed out, then nodded to Thorn.
"Thank you, Skull." Thorn sighed standing up and addressing the group. "I apologize for taking away your precious time, but it's all for a good cause. We're all here because we want the same thing: to be mortal." The entire group silenced and looked at their leader in amazement.
"Now, I did my research, and if all goes right, we will be completely human at midnight one month from now. We have the ancient vials...so all we need is-"
"WE FOUND THE VIALS?!?!" a vampire interrupted. The whole group turned to face him. "How?! How did you find the blood of our first king?!" Skull stood up and slapped the vampire who spoke across the face.
"Think before you talk, commoner! You should learn to choose your words wisely when addressing the King of the Twilight Realm!" Skull ordered. Thorn tapped Skull on the sholder and grinned as he turned to face Thorn.
"I think that was too far, Skull. Please, sit." Skull crossed his arms over his chest and sat down. Thorn continued where he left off.
"It wasn't hard to locate the blood of my own great great grandfather, to answer your question, my brother. As I was saying, all we need now is my great great grandmother's, our first Queen's, Crimson Blood-drop Amulet. And we need to make our plan known to our other bretheren who have traveled here for the sole purpose of becoming human."
"But sire, what of those who wish to not be human?" Mace asked. Thorn smiled.
"Well now, those who are here in this warehouse are only here because they have agreed that they wished to be mortal. As far as I know, all of our brothers and sisters are here and wish for an opportunity to be equal with those day livers..."
Everyone was silent. Mace broke the silence.
"Then Thorn, might I suggest we get out those plans for the possible location of the amulet? If the moon turns full in one month, then we should start looking like...oh I don't know...now?" he laughed with a smile. Thorn grinned and opened up a map.
"Now then...Our first destination is here...: the age-old graveyard on 43rd street. Mace and I will begin our search there tomorrow. Now, meeting adjourned!" And with that, bats hovered out of the meeting room through a skylight.
