Let This Go [part four]

School was weird. It was getting harder and harder to concentrate during class. Josh was being distant with her and Katii constantly felt like there was some big secret everyone else knew but she didn't.
"Hayley?"
"Hmm?"
"Can I have a word?"
"Umm not now, I'm kinda busy," and then she'd run off.
"Josh?"
"Yeah?"
"Why's everyone acting so weird? I mean, Hayley keeps saying she's busy, when clearly she's not..."
"I er, I don't know. Listen, I gotta go. I have some math homework to do. See you."

Katii sighed and put her head in her hands. "Katii?" She looked up. It was only Zac. "What's wrong?"
"I don't know. That's what everyone else keeps saying. I feel like...like there's some big secret that everyone else knows. Everyone but me. Do you know?"
Zac sat down by her. "Secret? It's not my secret to tell, you see."
"You're my friend, aren't you?"
"Yes."
Katii looked at him. "What is this 'secret' then?"
She watched him fidget uncomfortably. He started down at his hands. "Ask Josh. He'll tell you." Then he got up and walked away hurriedly. Katii sighed pulled out her cellphone.
She tapped out a message to Josh. Meet me after school?
A couple of minutes later, hercell signalled the arrival of a new text. Sure.

The second 8th period ended, Katii gathered up her things and rushed out of class. She found Josh waiting for her by her locker. "Hey," he said when she ran up to him.
"Hi hi," she said breathlessly, throwing her folders inside the locker.
"Shall we go?" he asked politely.
She giggled. "Sure why not."
He fell into step with her. "So what class did you just have?"
"Physics. It is so boring. I swear, Mr Jackson's voice is like a drug. Highly toxic; the second you hear it, you're asleep."
"Kind of like morphine. huh?" he laughed.
Then Katii remembered what was nagging at her inside her mind. "Josh?"
"Yes?"
"There's something I want to ask you," she paused. "I'm not exactly sure what it is but, Zac told me there's something you need to tell me?"
"Zac!" Josh muttered to himself. Well, he was really gonna get it when he got home. Josh looked down at Katii's face, which was looking up at him, innocently. He swallowed nervously. "What makes you think there's something I need to tell you?" They had reachedher road.
Katii looked up at him. She scanned his face slowly. "Nothing really. Just...everyone's been a bit off with me lately and I kinda want to know why."
Josh cleared his throat. He just wanted to reach out and kiss her. "Do you really want to know?"
Katii considered this for a moment. "Yes."
"Are you sure?"
"Positive."
Josh swallowed. It was now or never. "I um..." then Katii'scell went off.
She held up a hand. "Hang on, I have to take this." and then began babbling away in Japanese to probably her mom.
Dammit, he thought. Typical.
When she finished her call, Katii turned back to Josh. "Sorry, my mom wants me to be back ASAP, cos she has a surprise or something planned for my dad and she needs help so i have like, a minute. What were you saying?"
Josh stared into her pretty little face for a moment before replying, "I...I forgot."
Katii's face fell. "Wha...?" She looked at him, her face full of disappointment. "Well tell me when you've remembered then." she said, almost angrily, before turning and storming off down her road.

Josh stared after her before shoving his hands in his pockets and trudging away. "I forgot?" he said to himself. "How lame! What is wrong with me?"

Just metres away, Katii was lying on her stomach in her room, on her bed, her face in the pillow. She knew Josh didn't really forget. He just didn't want to tell her.
