Katii and Hayley both laughed at Zac trudging through the school gates, forced into carrying all of Josh's stuff for him.
"You're so mean, Josh!" laughed Hayley.
"What?" grinned Josh. "Oh alright." He took back his things and started towards the girls.
Hayley turned back towards Katii. "You know what?"
"What?"
"You should come watch us rehearse."
Katii raised an eyebrow. "For what?"
"Band rehearsal. Duh!" Hayley laughed.
"Is Katii coming to band rehearsal? Cool." Josh sat down beside the girls. "After school, my house."
"The basement's this way..." Josh led Katii down the hallway and down some steps, into a big white-walled room. Inthe corner was a drum kit. There were a couple of guitar stands, none actually being used. The guitars weresitting on top of the table, which was covered with notebooks and screwed up paper balls. An big, old, red couch sat in another corner.
Katii laughed and pointed at the guitar stands. "What's the point of having them if you're not going to use them?"
Josh shrugged and grinned. "Decor, I suppose."
"So..." Katii went over and sat on the sofa. Sheand Josh werealone in the house. His parents and his brothers and sisters were out. Zachad gone to buy something andHayley and the others hadn't arrived yet.
"So." he said, smiling at her, hands in his pockets. "Looks like it's just us. Alone."
Katii giggled nervously. She folded her arms and crossed her legs. "Stop it, you're making me nervous."
"Don't worry, I'm not going to do anything. I think," he laughed. he sat down beside her. "So have you seen anyone you like so far?"
"I'm not telling you that!" said Katii. Josh smirked.
"Why not? I'm not going to tell anyone. Unless it's Zac, oh my god, it's Zac!"
Katii slapped him on the arm. "It's not Zac! He's a little bit too young."
Josh smirked again. He pointed at the crystal star pendant hanging around her neck. "That's pretty, who gave you that?"
Katii touched it. "Thanks. It was a leaving present. From all my friends."
Josh leaned closer to her to look at it. "Can I have a look?" When she nodded, he reached out and touched it. His fingers brushed gently against her skin. Katii tried to ignore the tingly feeling going down her spine. "Looks very pretty on you..." he smiled at her and their eyes met. There was a little silence as they looked at each other. Katii noticed that his eyes were actually brown and Josh noticed that her eyes were a beautiful shade of dark brown. Then she felt chemistry. She looked away and Josh cleared his throat awkwardly. "
Distract me," he said suddenly.
Katii gave him a funny look, but she didn't question him. She didn't feel the need to. "Um OK. Let's talk about...your music. Guitar! How long have you been playing guitar?"
When the others did finally arrive, they did some rehearsal. Katii could not deny that they were good. Really good.
"How was that?" Hayley asked her when they took a break for snacks. Katii laughed.
"Great. Really great. I loved it!" She clapped. Hayley smiled.
"Thanks. Hey Zac?"
"I'll go get drinks and stuff..." Zac grumbled.
"I'll help you, man." Jeremy laughed and followed him out of the basement.
"So what did you guys do before we arrived?" Hayley wanted to know.
"Oh just, y'know, talked and stuff," said Katii, disguising any traces of lies in her voice.
"Oh. Like what?" She looked up up at Josh, who was staring into space. Did Hayley know something.
"Just about music and guitars," Katii got up. "I need to pee."
"'Kay."
The second Hayley knew Katii was out of earshot, she turned to Josh, hands on her hips. "Josh."
"What?"
"When are you going to tell her?"
"Tell her what? There's nothing to tell." He got up and turned away from Hayley's glare. Hayley sighed in annoyance.
"That you're crushing on her. Duh!"
Josh folded his arms. "I'm not crushing on her. What makes you think that?"
"Josh!" Hayley rolled her eyes. "I'm not blind. I can so tell - I've known you for years, remember?"
"I am not-" Hayley grabbed the front of his shirt. "OK fine! Maybe I do."
"Finally." She let go and sat back down again. "So when are you going to tell her?"
"What makes you think I'm going to tell her?"
Hayley gritted her teeth and clenched her fists. Sometimes this boy could be so stubborn. "Josh..."
"I just don't want to ruin our friendship," he said, turning away.
"You'll tell her someday, won't you?" Josh didn't have time to reply because Katii came back.
"Tell who what?" she asked brightly.
"Nothing. No-one's telling anything," replied Hayley, directing it towards Josh, who didn't meet her eyes. Katii gave Hayley a funny look. "Doesn't matter."
Katii couldn't help but feel a little left out in the dark.
