Kami was waiting patiently for the plane to land. Okay, maybe not so patiently because he couldn't hold still for more than three minutes, but at least he tried not to attract too much attention on him. Who he was waiting for exactly? The girl that strolled his way with a friendly smile on her face.

"Hey, Kami" she greeted casually.

"Hey. Long time no see" he replied, grinning at the girl.

"It hasn't been that long".

Kami shrugged and led her to his car. "So, where to?" he asked, realizing that he didn't know where she lived.

"Hold on" she mumbled and pulled out from a pocket a piece of paper with the address on.

Kami took it and started to laugh. "Are you serious?"

"Yeah. What's so funny?" asked the girl slightly confused.

"We're going to be neighbors, Selene" he answered, still smiling and drove towards their apartment complex.

A little confused maybe? Well, Selene and Kami met through Gackt. The boys were best friends and the vocalist and Selene were like siblings from childhood. Those two and Selene's elder brother, Mike, were inseparable. Selene was American-Japanese, coming from a rich family and having a soft spot for arts.

She and her brother spent the past Christmas in Paris and invited Gackt and his best friend to come with them. They all had a blast although they gave hell to the staff of the mansion. All in all, Selene and Kami became close fast. She loved Malice Mizer and he loved her paintings – especially those that included themes with butterflies, fact that Selene found out later. They spent a month together in Paris. He returned to Japan; she to the USA to finish high school. In summer they met again in Paris, where they spent another month and celebrated her graduation. Even though they were apart for months, they haven't lost contact.

Now Selene moved to Tokyo for her first year as a student and since Gackt was a little caught up, Kami offered to pick up the 18 years old from the airport, so she won't feel so lonely…the rest of her family was in the USA.

"I don't know if this is cool or scary" said Selene, putting her hands on her hips. There were only two apartments on that floor. Hers and Kami's.

"This is cool" grinned the young man, running through the apartment and mumbling to himself what it might need.

"Kami, are you high on sugar?" asked Selene, thinking how he went from calm to crazy in 30 min. it was really no wonder that he was called monkey man; he was all over the place, but didn't knock a single thing out of its place.

"Can I move here?" he asked, bouncing next to Selene.

"No" she answered dryly, trying to ignore the way he pouted. "For crying out loud, Kami" she finally gave in with a sigh "You live next door. You can visit anytime you want".

"YAY! See?! That's why I love you" he said with a childish voice, hugging Selene briefly. She shook her head and kicked him out. She needed rest after the flight from the States to Japan.

"KAMI, PUT ME DOWN" yelled Selene through the laughter. It was New Year's Eve – her first in Japan – and she was celebrating it with Malice Mizer, just like she did that Christmas. And Kami thought it would be funny proving just how strong he was – or how light the girl was – by twirling her around the room. It proved to be rather funny, since even Mana was laughing along with the others.

"There you go, My lady" Kami finally breathed out, plopping on a couch with Selene on his lap.

"You're one crazy dude" she mumbled, too dizzy to do or say anything else.

"And you've just realized that?" came Kozi's question, earning a glare from Selene.

"Okay, everyone. Gather up. It's almost time" said Gackt as the countdown started.

Selene tried to get to her feet, but Kami's arm was snaked securely around her waist. When their gazes met, he smiled and pulled her closer as a light blush spread on her cheeks. The others grinned at each other but didn't say anything even though they were feeling what was coming.

Way after midnight, Kami and Selene were returning home. No car, just the two of them. The streets were still pretty much deserted except for a few cars that went past them. They weren't in a zone with clubs or restaurants, so there was no one to disturb them.

"What's this?" asked Selene when they went away from the normal route and stopped in the middle of a park.

"I like to come here often. It…inspires me" answered Kami.

"Oh. So, why are we here now?" asked the girl, feeling a slight hesitation coming from her companion.

"I just…The thing is…I".

"Yeees" interfered Selene, wondering why Kami was stumbling on his words.

The young man took a deep breath and put his hands on her shoulders. "I love you" he blurred out, looking straight into her eyes.

"I know. You told me that when I moved here" replied Selene, half amused.

Kami chuckled lightly but didn't let go of her. "You don't understand. I really, really love you" he said with a shy smile on his face.

Selene felt a blush rise on her face…and it wasn't because of the cold. At the same time though, she felt like a weight was lifted from her heart. Her mouth opened, but only a quiet "oh" came out…she was pretty much lost in his eyes since he was only a few inches away.

"I understand if you don't feel the same…" he trailed off after a few moments, fear showing its head in his heart.

"It's not that" she hurried to assure him, the blush not going down "It's just that…I've never been in love. Until now, that is".

Kami's smile returned full force and Selene returned the gesture softly. His arms dropped to her waist and he pulled her closer to him as his lips captured hers in their first kiss. She leaned up and wrapped her arms around his neck, her fingers finding their way through his long hair. Only by the time they finally got close to home did they realize that it was snowing.

Five months later, Selene finished her exams and skipped happily out of the university and into her boyfriend's arms.

"I'm so happy it's finally over" she managed to say through the shower of kisses.

"Me too. I can have you more to myself" grinned Kami, leading her to his car.

The ride was pretty much quiet since they were both tired – she from studying and him from many hours of work with his band mates. But they were happy together and only that mattered. Selene's brother had visited them not long ago and congratulated them. But his warning lingered in their minds.

"Look guys, I'm happy for you. Kami, I know that you're a good guy and I can see that you love my sister. But I have to be honest…our parents don't see with good eyes this relationship".

"I love you" said Selene suddenly.

"I love you too" he replied, love and sincerity shining in his eyes.

Days turned into weeks, then months and finally years. Those two were still together and very much in love. Her parents grew to accept Kami when they finally realized that it wasn't just a teenage romance for their daughter. As for Kami's parents, they accepted and loved Selene from the first time they met her.

Kami and Selene practically lived together. It was a rare thing for both of them to be free and not spend the days, and especially the nights, together. Only one really bad event clouded their relationship at one point. Because of the stress that fell upon her during some problems within her family, Selene suffered a heart attack. Kami never left her side while she was in the hospital and made sure to keep her away from problems that might lead to other health problems.

It was the beginning of 1999 when Kami finally came with his final decision. He was at Selene's place, waiting for the girl to come back home. She was almost 21 and in her last year as a student. He was rather nervous and wanted everything to be perfect for that night.

"Hey, love" greeted Selene cheerfully, kicking her shoes away and dropping her coat and bag on the couch. "Are you preparing something?" she asked, peering into the kitchen, where Kami was struggling with a pan.

"Um, dinner will be ready soon" he said, throwing a smile over his shoulder, before focusing again on what he was trying to cook. Key word: trying.

And Selene was quite surprised that she couldn't figure out what they'd have for dinner…Kami wasn't such a bad cook after all. Yeah, sure…her 21st birthday was the next day, but still…

"Kami, are you mad at me?" she asked, sitting on the edge of the table.

Startled by the question, Kami swirled around. "Of course not. Why would you think that?"

"You didn't even kiss me when I came home" she answered with a cute pout.

Kami sighed relieved and shook his head amused. "Come here, you" he said, pulling his girlfriend into a passionate kiss. Selene grinned inwardly and lifted her arms around his neck.

"I'd like to get to dessert. What about you?" she asked quietly, breaking the kiss only for a moment.

"Good idea" was the only reply she got. Picking her up, Kami made his way quickly to her bedroom. Not bothering to know where the clothes landed and dinner long forgotten, the apartment was soon filled with moans and groans of pleasure.

Somewhere close to midnight, the full moon was shining through the window on the two sweaty bodies. Kami was sitting with his head on Selene's chest and his arms wrapped around her waist, enjoying the way her fingers were running through his hair and how her body felt so perfect next to his.

"Selene" he whispered.

"Mm".

"Aishiteru".

"I love you too, baby".

"Selene" he said again after a few moments of silence "Marry me".

Selene's breath was caught in her throat for a moment. "What?" was the only thing she could whisper.

"Marry me" said Kami, this time lifting his head and staring into her eyes.

"Yes" she answered happily.

Kami grinned and leaned over on the other side of the bed. Selene watched curiously as he pulled a small box and from it, a beautiful engagement ring. He slipped it on her finger and stole another kiss.

"Happy birthday" wished Kami. They had spent many nights making love, but that was one of the times that remained the closest to their hearts.

The next morning caught the two lovers still in bed, this time with Selene sitting with her head on Kami's chest.

"I think we should marry in summer" he said suddenly, moving a strand of hair from her face.

"So soon?" she asked, staring at the ring.

"Yeah. Why wait any longer?"

"Hm, okay. How about July, 1st? It will be after I finish my studies" suggested Selene.

"Fine by me".

"Oh, and Kami?!"

"Yes?"

"After we get married, I want to buy a house".

"Why?"

"I think that one day we'll have children and I'd like to raise them in a more open space" she explained.

"Whatever you wish" answered Kami, smiling at the thought of the bright future that awaited them. They weren't aware of the tragedy that was to strike their lives.

Years later, in a hot summer day, Mike Blackthorn and Gackt Camui were standing in front of two tombstones, both graves covered with flowers. Back in 1999, the news of the marriage was received fairly well.

Kami and Selene became legally husband and wife on June 15th 1999, leaving the religious ceremony for July 1st as they first planned it. It never happened though. Kami passed away on June 21st. The moment she found out, Selene suffered the second heart attack. Being weakened by the first one, the young woman couldn't be rescued. She wasn't willing to return.

From the tombstones, the pictures of Kami and Selene were staring at Gackt and Mike: Ukyou Kamimura (1973-1999) and Ukyou Selene (1978-1999).

"Not even death could tear them apart" said Mike quietly, turning towards the car.

Gackt didn't reply. He was seeing what the other man couldn't: his two best friends together, smiling at him and as in love as angels as they were as humans.
