You were back at school, walking down the hall with Ben, just talking to him. You all had made up, and you told Ben everything that Marissa had told you.
"I have to break up with her, then," said Ben.
"No, you don't have-"
"Yes, I do," he interrupted, "I can't be with anyone that will treat my best friend like that."
You smiled, "Thanks."
"Anything for you," he said, also smiling. There was an wakward silence before Ben finally spoke again, "Riley, can I tell you something?"
"Sure," you said, your heart beating faster.
"I never really liked Marissa that much," he said, stopping and stepping a little closer to you.
"Really?" you said, also stepping a little closer to him.
"Yeah."
"I didn't either."
"I know."
"But if you didn't like her, why did you go out with her?"
Ben took a breath before speaking, as if he were nervous, "I...wanted to make you jealous..."
"Why?" You all were so close, you were almost on top of each other now.
"Riley...I don't really know how to say this..."
"Say what, Ben?"
"Riley...I think that I lov-"
Ring! Ring! Ring!
"A PHONE!" you yelled, obviously angered that your perfect moment was ruined. At first you were confused as to why there was a phone ringing in school, but then you opened your eyes and realized that it was a dream, and your cell phone was ringing, "STUPID CELL PHONE!" you yelled. You were so angry that you thought about not answering it, but then you were curious to see who interrupted your dream. It was Aaron, and you decided to answer it. "WHAT!?" you said.
"Whoa, sounds like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning," said Aaron.
"You just woke me up from a really good dream!"
"Oh, were you busy dreaming about Ben?"
He was joking, but you were caught off guard by this question, saying, "What!? Aaron, don't say that; he has a girlfriend!"
"I was just kidding. Jeez, Riley, I think you need to go back to bed."
"Well I could still be dreaming if it wasn't for you!"
"You know what, I'm getting someone else to call you back later."
"No!" you said, "You already called me and put up with all my anger, so tell me why you called!"
"Well, Ben said he would tell us what time the movie was today, and it's at 2:15."
You just realized that it was Saturday. You had completely forgotten about the movie. "Why didn't Ben tell me then?" you asked.
"He said that it would be better if someone else called you, and heasked me to. And now I see why he didn't, jeez you are cranky in the mornings."
You knew that's not why he didn't to call you, it was because of your argument. "So are you coming? Ben needs to know for sure before buying all of our tickets."
You thought about saying no. You didn't want to see Ben and Marissa, that was the last thing you needed right now...But then you realized that you all had been planning this before Ben hooked up with Marissa, so she wouldn't be coming. "Yeah, I'm coming," you said.
"Alright...and, um, Riley?"
"Yeah?"
"Do us all a favor and take a nap or something before you go. Okay, bye."
Before you even got a chance to say anything back, he hung up. He was obviously afraid that you would yell at him or something. You had done that a lot so far this morning...
You looked at the clock, it said 1:00. That was later than what you normally slept. You knew you should probably get to the movie theatre at about 2:00, which would mean you should leave (or rather, your mom take you) at about 1:45 to be on the safe side. So you took a shower, changed your clothes, and did your hair and make up. By the time you were done it was 1:40, and you decided to go tell your mom that you should leave.
"Okay, Mom, we need to go in like five minutes," you said.
"Go where?" asked your mom.
Oh, yeah, you never told her. Oops. "To the movies."
"And why was I not informed of this?"
"Sorry...I...forgot...I guess..."
Your mom just looked at you for a moment, then said, "Well, I guess I'll let you go, but I would like to actually know next time."
"Yeah, sorry."
"Alright, go out to the car, I'll be there in a minute."
You did as you were told, and within a couple of minutes your mom was in the car, driving you to the movie theatre. You got there at 1:57, earlier than you were planning, but everyone was already there anyway.
Brent was the first to walk up to you, "Hey, here's you ticket," he handed it to you.
"Thanks, why do you have it though?" you asked.
"Well, Ben gave it to Aaron, and Aaron seemed terrified when he realized he had to give it to you, so he gave it to Emily, and when Emily had to go to the bathroom she gave it to me..."
You laughed a little at his comment about Aaron being terrified, and decided to go greet him "Hey Aaron!" you said, giving him a friendly hug.
"Oh, great, what did I do now? Please don't yell at me again!"
"Relax, Aaron, I'm not gonna yell at you, you just caught me at a bad time."
He gave a sigh of relief and muttered, "No kidding..." You noticed Ben was standing alone, while Brent and Emily were talking, and you and Aaron were talking. Should you go talk to Ben? You decided that you should. You leftAaron (not without saying something, of course) and walked over to Ben.
"Well, you appear to be the one avoiding me, now," you said.
"Oh, uh, hi, Riley."
"Hi," you said.
Awkward silence.
"Look," you said, "I don't want us to keep being mad at each other. We're gonna be spending less time with each other as it is, and if we keep it up at this rate it will be no time, and neither of us want that."
He looked down at you for the first time, and smiled, "Yeah."
"Truce?" you said, sticking out your hand for him to shake it.
"Yeah, truce," he said. He shook your hand, then surprised you by pulling you into a hug. And of course you hugged back, it felt so good to be in Ben's arms...
"Benny boo I'm here!" yelled Marissa from across the movie theatre. You couldn't help but laugh a little at the name "Benny boo". Ben did look a little embarrassed, then he realized he was still hugging you and pushed you away, with a guilty look on his face. Marissa gave him a look like she understood that it was just a friendly hug, but she gave the most evil if-looks-could-kill glare you had ever seen. And, like always, Ben did not catch it. Then you realized, Marissa was there. She was not supposed to be there. You made up with Ben, and Marissa had to come in and ruin the whole thing for you! You knew this sort of thing would be happening more often, though.
You all finally went into the movie. You attempted to sit next to Ben, but of course Marissa had to come over and sit between the two of you, giving youthe usual evil glare, undetected by Ben. Aaron sat on the right side of you, and he seemeda littlenervous about it. You must have really scared him this morning over the phone...you couldn't help but laugh a little just thinking about it. Brent sat on the right side of Aaron, and on his right, Emily. The movie started, and before too long, Ben did the classic move where youyawn and stretch out your arm so it's around the girl next to you...the only problem, was, that girl was Marissa, not you. You felt a wave of jealousy crash over you. Oh, how you wished you were in Ben's arms right now, instead of Marissa. Then you saw Ben smile, you knew he actually wanted Marissa to be there, and the jealousy got worse. You should have stayed home...but then again, making up with Ben wasworth it.
***************Ben's P.O.V.***************
You had gotten Aaron to calland tell Rileywhen the movie was, you just couldn'tstand to talk to her after your argument. Aaron called you back, saying that she was still going to the movie. You half expected her not to go, and you were glad that she still was. Then Aaron started saying how much he hated you for making him call Riley becauseshe was cranky in the mornings. You couldn't help but laugh a little. Riley wasn't exactly a morning person, butAaron must have really caught her at a bad time for him to go on and on like that.
You bought the tickets, and waited. The first person to show up was Emily. You gave her her ticket, and you all didn't really have much to talk about. Before long, though, Brent showed up, and you gave him his ticket and started an actual conversation. When Aaron arrivedthe two of you started talking separately while Brent and Emily when off and had their own conversation. When you gave Aaron his ticket, you realized Riley would be there soon. So, you gave a ticket to Aaron, told him thathe needed to give it to Riley, and beforehe had a chance to give it back to you, you ran off to the bathroom. Of course Aaron tried to dump the ticket on Emily, you could hear their conversation from inside the bathroom.
"And why can't you give the ticket to Riley?" asked Emily.
"She scares me!" said Aaron.
You could hear Brent laughing, and Emily saying "Why does she scare you?"
"Have you ever talked to her right after she woke up?"
"I don't know, why?"
"You don't want to!"
"Fine, I'll give the ticket to her, you big baby," said Emily.
"Good luck!" yelled Aaron as she walked away.
"I don't know what she said to scare you so much, Aaron, but I'm sure you're taking it too far!" said Emily. Before long, Emily went to the bathroom and gave the ticket to Brent, and then Riley showed up. She didn't even look at you, but she didn't really seem to notice you either. After she got done talking to Brent, she went and talked to Aaron, obviously just to annoy him. Then she saw you. She seemed to debate on whether or not to go talk to you, and she decided she should. You still refused to look at her, though.
"Well, you appear to be the one avoiding me, now," she said. It was true, you didn't call her, give her her ticket, or even say hi to her.
"Oh, uh, hi, Riley," was all that you managed to say.
"Hi," she said. There was an awkward silence, then she spoke again, "Look, I don't want us to keep being mad at each other. We're gonna be spending less time with each other as it is, and if we keep it up at this rate it will be no time, and neither of us want that."
You looked down at her for the first time, and you smiled, "Yeah."
"Truce?" she said, sticking out her hand for you to shake it.
"Yeah, truce." At first you shook her hand, then you couldn't help it, you pulled her into a hug. She actually hugged you back. It felt so good to be holding Riley in your arms...
"Benny boo, I'm here!" yelled Marissa. You were sure that everyone in the whole freaking movie theatre must have heard her call you Benny boo. You Felt embarrassed, then guilty when you realized you were still hugging Riley. You pushed her away, but Marissa had already seen it. To your surprise, she gave you a look letting you know that it was okay, that it was only a friendly hug. It was so much more to you, though...
When you went in the movie you were going to sit next to Riley, but somehow Marissa managed to get in between the two of you. You sat on the end, then going to the right, Marissa, Riley, Aaron (who still looked a little freaked out by whatever Riley had said to him on the phone this morning, and you laughed a little), Brent, and Emily. Not long into the movie, you decided to put your arm around Marissa. You did the classic, pretend to yawn and stretch out your arm and put it around them, thing. You realized you didn't want it to be Marissa there, though; you wanted it to be Riley. You imagined Riley there, which made you smile. Then you came back to reality, and continued to watch the movie.
