"Elle...Elle! Are you still there?" Alice's worried voice began to say. But it was like an echo, getting fainter and fainter. Elle, it's Dan...He's back. How could he be back? Wasn't he taken by Jen? I know from how she was that she wouldn't just let him go like that to her enemies. I was glad he was back...overjoyed, but...how? In a way, the cold fear overcame me, making me feel as if my life were crashing upon me. Something didn't seem right.
"Ma'am?...Ma'am? Are-are you alright?" I heard a small voice say in front of me. I blinked numbly to see a small clerk boy with his store uniform on and a worried and anxiouse expresion upon his face. "Hello?" He called and he waved a hand in front of my face, "Are you okay?"
It felt like hours before I was able to get what he was trying to ask me and I shook my head. Bad idea. My head felt like it was pounding and my ears began to ring making the pain even worse. My heartbeat pounded in my ears and all sound began to drown with the slow beats. The boys mouth moved again, but what he said was a mystery to me. But I remembered his quetion from before and tried to answer.
"I'm fine..." I was able to hear myslef say. My hand went to my head as if it would keep my head together from the splitting headache I felt, "Just..." It felt like it was getting harder to breath. Each breath making my eyelids feel heavier, "Fi..." My body felt weak and my legs couldn't hold myself any longer. The heaviness of my eyeslids won and I felt my eyes close before all things drowned and I was in complete darkness.
"I'm fine..." Elle's voice began to say in it's weak tone. Her hand went to her head and her skin was growing paler and paler as she looked to the clerk buy. "Just..." Elle's breathing began to increase as her body was getting weaker and weaker, "Fi..." Elle's eyes rolled back nad her eyes closed as her legs went weak beneath her.
"Ma'am!" The boy hollered. He reached out and tried to grab hold of Elle as she flew down to the ground, but with the slippery floor and old shoes that slipped upon the smooth floor, Elle's body took down the boy and her until her head slammed on the tile making a sickenly thud. The boy went t his knees and looked down at Elle to see if she was okay, and panicked when Elle made no movement or sign tha she felt any pain.
"H-help! Somebody...HELP!" He called out. Immediately, a man that was coming down the isle saw Elle's limp form and heard the boy, and ran down the isle, dropping the small basket he held in his hands. The boy sighed with releif seeing the man come.
"What happened?" He asked in a seriouse tone.
"I...I don't reallt know. I came down here to stock up the food and this chick was just standing here. She looked really scared so I went up to her to see if she was okay and it was like she didn't even here me until I had asked if she was okay five times. She started saying she was but I think she was stuggling to breath right. The next thing I know, she passed out and that's when I called for help." The boy was exhasperated and in shock once he told the man what happened. not beleiving what was actaully going on right now.
"What's your name?" The man asked.
"Uh-uh Bryan...Bryan Miller." Bryan answered.
"Jack Wilson." The man said back. "Alright, Bryan. I need you to get a cloth and wet it with arm water and some cold water."
"Okay." Bryan answered back and scurried to his feet, running down the isle and turning the corner, nearly knocking the old woman over as he went.
Jack reached into his pocket and took out his cellphone, dialing 911 and waiting for someone to pick up.
"Police, what's your emergency?" A woman answered.
"Yes, I'm here at the Food Market and I have a young woman here who's unconciouse. From what I was told, she just collapsed out of nowhere."
"Alright sir. We'll be there as fast as we can." With that, the woman hung up. Jack closed his phone and looked at Elle. She was pale, almost white. She began to go into a cold sweat and slowly, Jack's eyes began to see someting next to her head. When he looked closer, he gasped when he saw a small puddle of blood.
Edward sit on the small love seat, the small lack remote in his hands. He flipped through soap opera's and reality shows, pointless things to watch in the early hours of the moring. He looked boringly at the screen. It had been about thrity minutes since Elle had left and already he didn't know what to do. He was used to going out hunting when it was sunny or go hunting with his family. Now, he was unfamiliar with his surroundings, and knew that there wasn't a lot of wildlife in the city.
What caught his attention, stopping his thoughts of what he could be doing at the moment was a small picture next to the television. A small girl was upon a woaman's back, her arms wrapped around her neck. Both of the smiled widley as the sun shined on their faces. In the blink of an eye, Edward was in front of the picture, smiling as he saw the young Elle. He remembered seeing a wall covered in pictures next to the kitchen, and found himself with something to do.
Again, he went in a flash to the wall with many shaped frames covered in pictures. Here and there was a handprint impinted in plaster or a drawing made by a child with loud colors and scribbles.
His golden eyes moved to every picture. Some pictures dated back to the 1800-1900 era, other's from recent. He saw the school pictures of Elle, baby pictures, family pictures, memories. He couldn't help but look in dusgust at some pictures that included Dan in it. If only I could tell Elle of what was to come of him... Edward thought. Dan had caused so much pain already.
Suddenly, the small ring from his pocket rung only once before Edward had the phone to his ear.
"Yes." He answered.
"Edward, it's Elle. She's gone unconciouse at the store. Go!" Alice said and hung up. Edward grabbed his car keys and right as he went out the door, he made sure to put the dark jacket he held, putting the hood on and appearing in the driver's seat, backing out of the driveway and racing towards the store.
It seems that either way, something bad was going to follow Elle and him wherever they went. It only took nearly four or five minutes to race to the car and speed away towards the store Elle was at. His ears heard sirens coming in the distance and he skidded to a halt in an empty parking space, making sure his hood was up while he swooped out of his car and walked into the store. At once, his eyes made landed on a great crowd of people on the isle ahead.
"I already called the police so they should be here anytime." A man said. Another boy came from a room near the other side of the store, holding a white cloth in his hand, looking scared as he tried not to run into anything while he turned to go down the isle.
"Excuse me." Edward said, running at a normal speed to the crowd. Hearing his voice made the crowd separate for him with just those two small words, and some of the woman goggled at his beauty.
He's so beautiful.
But all these thoughts were nothing to Edward as he saw Elle's limp body. But there was something that put him on edge of not to show who he really was to all these people. From where Elle's head lie, he saw a puddle of blood being wiped away by a man that was next to her. Edward had the need to get blood. And even though he knew he could control it, for some reason Elle's blood smelled extra delicouse and looked more alluring than ever.
She needs help. Don't be stupid enough to think of her blood, Edward. Edward told himself. He crouched beside Elle and realised that as he looked at her, the feeling of the need to feed vanished. Her body was now paler than before, her face had lost it's color and her face was covered in a cold sweat.
"Excuse me, but do you know her?" Jack said in a slightly tight tone, not enjoying the fact that some stranger had just set himself next to Elle.
"I'm her boyfriend." Was all he said. The woman in the back looked dishearted and disappointed now that they knew Edward was taken.
"Does she have an illness or something of fainting?" Jack asked.
"No. Can someone tell me what specifically happened?" Edward asked from underneath his hood, searching the man's eyes to see who had seen Elle. The man's mind made out the slerk boy that had come with the rag and Edward's eyes switched to the boy standing beside Jack. Sencing Edward might have known, Bryan began to speak up once again, telling what he had seen and what happened.
"So that's when I was told to get the rag and-" Edward put his hand up, letting Bryan know he didn't have to say anything else.
"I called the police just a bit ago so they should be here anytime to take her to the hospital." Jack reassured.
"Thank you."
"Out of the way!" A masculen voice said. The crowd separated to reveal two paramedics with a gurney rolling with them.
"Move aside please." One of them told Jack and Edward. The two moved aside, though Edward tried to stay beside Elle as much as possible.
If only Carlisle were here.
The two paramedics took Elle's blood pressure and heart rate as fast as they could, lowering the gurney as they put Elle upon it.
"Go ahead son." Jack told Edward and then turned to the two paramedics, "This boy's her boyfriend. He needs to go too."
"Right, come on." One of the paramedics said as they rolled Elle out. They ran to the car and Edward set himself next to Elle as she was put into the ambulence. One of the men stayed in the back as the other drove away to the hospital.
"We didn't get too much information about what happened. Only that this girl fainted and was still unconciouse. Did anything happen to her before that could have caused her to faint. Any sicknesses?" He asked.
"No. She's perfectly healthy." Edward replied. He too asked himself this question. Why would she faint out of nowhere? But as he thought of the moments before he came to Elle, he remembered that Alice had said something about Dan being back. She told Elle about this, and knowing how Elle was very worried about how Dan was gone, she could have gone into a state of shock after hearing he was back.
"I think Elle might have gone into shock. You see, she just found out that her father has...come back safely from his trip, he's been gone for a very long time now, and she must have been overwelmed." Edward said, being sure not to mention Dan had been somewhat kidnapped. He moved slightly closer to Elle as the golden light of the sun began to move closer to him as the ambulence turned the corner. The paramedic took out a thick roll of bandages and started to wrap Elle's head, seeing that she was slightly bleeding from her head still. He stuck small heart beating indicators on Elle's chest and activated the small machine that began to beep at a smooth pace, it's green light going up and down each second.
"How far are we to the hospital now Art?" The paramedic asked the driver. Art kept his concentration on the road.
"We'll be at the E.R. in less than five mintues. How's she doing Stan?"
"She's healthy now. She's going to need blood though," Stan turned back towards Elle. "So you said she might have been in shock. It's possible that could have caused her to faint."
"Yes. It might have triggered something to make her stop her respiratory system from working at some point from the brain waves and she must have lost oxygen. The hit on her head doesn't seem too bad but she's going to need stitches right after she gets a CAT scan, and like you said, she needs blood after al that she lost already." Edward began to say, but nearing the end, his eyes closed on Elle's face and he began to mutter to himself what was needed.
"You a doctor or something?" Stan asked, shocked that Edward knew so much.
"My father's a doctor." Edward said simply.
All of a sudden, the monitor began to beep along with a small alarm showing that something was wrong with Elle. Her chest that was rising and falling as she breathed normally, stopped, and she seemed to lock in position, the monitor going crazy.
"She's going into cardiac arrest! Make it quick Art!" Stan yelled. He got a Heart Defibrillator and opened Elle's shirt, placing the small pads on Elle's chest and placing the small machine on the gurney, Stan pressed a red button and Elle's body jumped to life as th electric shocks raced through her body. The heart monitor showed the green light go past the screen in a straight line, something Edward didn't wish to hear or see.
"Come on Elle, wake up! Come on!" He said, placing his cold hands on Elle's face. He patted her face but nothing happened, and he feared he was too late. And he only had two choices to decide upon. Either he would have to bite Elle and hope that his venom would reach her heart and turn her into a vampire, and also, he would have to kill the two paramedics after they saw him bite Elle. Or, he was to let Elle die. He contemplated in his head what he knew he must do. Someone was going to have to die either way, but he wasn't sure if he could live up to that deed.
Stan stood over Elle, the machine no longer beaping.
"Clear!" He yelled. He pressed the button once more.
