I’ve perfected the art of sneaking out of the house. How? By practicing of course. My deviant streak of escapism started when my parents started fighting. I hated having to stay in the house while they screamed at each other. One day I got the urge to jump out my window and take the risk of breaking something if it meant I could get away. However, I soon realized it’s much easier to climb out and shimmy down the drain pipe. I perfected this when my dad married Emily. I’ve mentioned that my dad travels a lot, I hardly ever see him. This means I’ve been stuck at home numerous times with Emily, of whom I’ve also mentioned my extreme dislike for. I used this tactic multiple times over the years to get away from problems at my home. I never went anywhere that wasn’t approved by my parents though. I usually just walked around the neighborhood or down to the diner.
Once I reached my room after my dad’s little outburst I sat on my bed still extremely upset. My dad was never like that. I felt kind of bad for saying I hated him, but what kind of person blows up like that. I suppose I deserved a bit of it considering I did skip school. And if that had been the reasoning behind his outburst I would’ve been fine with it, sort of. The fact that it was because I went to see Alex is what really ticked me off. I knew my dad didn’t like the idea of me dating, but this is a little much. I sighed, completely and utterly depressed not only because of my dad but also because of Alex. That poor kid just walked into a death trap and then got booted out of my house. Plus, I basically ordered him to take me out and now I was stuck in my room. I glanced at my window and smiled. Was wrong for me to sneak out? Most likely. Was I going to do it anyway? Of course.
Once I was safely on the ground I walked across my lawn to the sidewalk and jogged past my house in case they happened to look out the living room window. I pulled out my cell phone once I was a descent distance away from the house and dialed Lyndsay’s number.
“Hello?” He answered curiously.
“Hey.” I said biting my lip.
“What’s up? You under lock down?” She asked.
“How do you know about that?” I asked completely astounded.
“I’m with Alex right now.” She said as if that was obvious.
“Oh that’s perfect.” I said with a smile.
“Sure?” She sounded slightly confused.
“Can you put him on?” She didn’t answer for a while and I started to think I lost her. That is until another voice filled my ears.
“Hello?”
“Hey Alex.” I said unable to keep the goofy smile off my face I got every time I thought of him now.
“Hey Molly. Are you okay?” he asked sounding concerned.
“Of course.” I said happily. “A little chilly but other than that perfect.”
“What?” He laughed.
“Where are you?” I asked quickly.
“Zack’s house.” He said slowly. “Why?”
“How far from my house is that?”
“Molly what are you doing?” He asked me his voice changing from concern to suspicion.
“Asking how far away Zack’s house is?” I asked innocently.
“Like a fifteen minute drive.” I sighed. That was not going to work for me.
“Do you think you could come pick me up?” I asked shyly.
“Molly, I don’t think it’s a good idea for me to come back to your house.” He said like he was talking to a crazy person.
“Don’t be stupid Alex.” I sighed. “I’m not at my house.”
“Where the hell are you then?”
“I’m down the street.” I said calmly.
“Where are you going?”
“I was going to find you but unfortunately a fifteen minute drive is a lot more of a walk.” I said stopping under a street lamp at the corner of my street. I heard him laugh on the other end.
“Stay where you are. I’ll be there in a few minutes.” He was still laughing as he hung up.
I stood where I was with my arms wrapped around myself for a good twenty minutes when a car finally pulled up in front of me. “How much?” Alex asked sticking his head out the open window.
“More than you can afford.” I said running around to the other side and jumping into the car.
“Feisty.” He said as he drove away from the corner.
“Shove it.” I said rubbing my hands together. Alex rolled up the windows and turned up the head. “Thank you.” I said glancing at him out of the corner of my eye. The side of his mouth turned up into a smile.
“You’re welcome.” He said still watching the road. He continued driving for I don’t know how long before I said something.
“Where are we going?’ I asked leaning back in my seat.
“Depends.” He said.
“On what?” I asked turning to look at him.
“On if you still want to go out with me.” He said glancing at me and then back at the road.
“Maybe.” I said turning back to look through the windshield. “Where would you take me if I did?’
“That’s not going to work.” He said smirking in my direction. “It’s a surprise.”
“Fine.” I said reluctantly. “Take me away Gaskarth.” I glanced over to see him grinning at the road.
