Beth stared out into space, into the night sky. The stars twinkled with a brilliance that was not easily matched. She slowly went over the events of the day in her head.
A knew kid had arrived at the school today and everybody had been talking about him. News travels fast in the small town of Frostburg, Texas. She thought about when she actually saw him. He was pretty average. Average height, average build. Oh, he had muscles, that was true, but he wasn't overly musculer. Though that was all that was average about him. The way he walked and talked had an air of dignity, and his eyes. His eyes were deep blue and when he looked at you, you had no choice but to look back. Not to mention he was HOT!!! When Beth first saw him she nearly fainted. He was the talk of all the girls at school. Damian Serling.
She sighed, staring up at thesky. And, of course, inless thantwo weeks, give or take a day or two, he would be wrapped around Taylor's finger. Guys like him always went for her. The pretty, popular girl with all the money.Bethsighed again.
"It's not safe for a little girl like you to be out at night. All alone." Said a voice from behind her. She nearly jumped out of her skin.
She slowly turned and faced the subject of her thoughts. Damian Sterling.
"Wha? What are you doin-?" She stopped as his words registered. "I'm not a 'little girl'! You're only two years older than I am!"
Damian's coal black hair whipped around his face as a sudden gust of wind blew through them. Then he smirked, as if enjoying some private joke.
"Compared to me, Bethany, you are very young. And besides, for all you know I could be one-hundred and seventy years older than you."
If she wasn't confused before, she was now. "What is that supposed to mean?"
He looked down at her, appraisingling. "Bethany. I've been waiting to talk to you all day."
This took her by surprise. "What?"
"You seem so...interesting." He continued to stare at her and after a while she had to look away, at her intertwined fingers. (Whatis he talking about? Whyis he interested in me?) She shivered as the wind blew past her. It was unusually cold tonight.
She felt something touch her shoulders and looked up to see Damian handing her his leather jacket. She hadn't even noticed he was wearing one, in fact, she hadn't noticed what he was wearing at all. And, even though his jacket felt colder than the wind at first, it warmed up. She noticed he was staring at the sky.
Still surprised that she was actually talking to him, she hesitantly asked. "What are you looking at?"
He pointed to a cluster of stars. "That's Orion. The constellation." A strange look flickered across his face. "It's named for a great warrior. A hunter." With that, he turned and stalked away, leaving Beth to think aboutall that hadhappened.
She shivered and pulled the jacket more tightly around her and breathed in the scent that was clinging to it. It didn't smell like any cologne she had smelled before. Then, she walked home, still confused.
The next few weeks were a blur. Damian talked to her most everyday, though he never had asked for his jacket back. Her best friend Jana was estatic about her and Damian's apparent friendship, and regularly asked her if they were going to go farther. Beth told her it wasn't like that, though she wasn't very certain herself.
The next night she had a nightmare about...well, she wasn't sure what it was about. Though it was a recurring nightmare, she always forgot it the moment she woke up.
She sat up in bed and looked around her room. Her desk and bookshelf that was always covered with piles of books that leaned to the extreme. Her old-fashioned windows that opened liked a set of double doors and were big enough to be ones, too. They nearly covered half of her west wall and were shut tight. Her eyes began to scan all the posters that covered her other three walls, then her eyes laid on the desk chair and the jacket that was hung over it. Then, she felt a slight breeze and looked over at the windows. She was certain they were shut. Then, she screamed and nearly fell off of her bed.
Damian was lounging by her windows, which were open and swaying in the breeze. "Surprise you?" He guessed.
She pulled the covers up to her neck, realising she was in her pajamas and glared at him. "What the hell are you doing here?!"
He shrugged. "You weren't at school. I got worried."
"School?" She searched for the clock that she had bumped off her nighttable when she screamed. She found it, it's bright neon numbers flashing 11:46 a.m.
"Oh, crap! It's nearly twelve!" She threw off her covers and ran to her closet, pausing quickly to point at Damian and order. "Close your eyes!" He obeyed.
She pulled on a grey tight fitting shirt and dark blue jeans. Then she grabbed her bag and muttered. "You can look now." When she turned around he was there, staring at the clock. She had to clamp her mouth shut so she wouldn't scream again. She hadn't even heard him walk over.
"You know," He said, thoughtfully. "we only have two more hours of school left. What's the point of going?"
She looked at him, slightly pissed. She wasn't a real morning person. "And what do you suppose we do?"
His eyes flickered to her, and he was suddenly smiling. "I think it's a nice day for a hike." He laughed.
Then, Beth remembered something. How he'd gotten into her room. "You know, we really should talk aboutyour issue withbreaking and entering." She sighed as he grabbed her wrist and dragged her out the door and into the almost-afternoon sun.
