In all of my 17 years, I'd had my fair share of surprises. My dad's car accident, coma, and then death. My mom's quick recovery and engagement a year later. My sudden seclution and lack of excitement to do anything at all. And as it turns out, I have a heck of a lot more surprisescoming than I thought. Who knew someone as simple as me would have so much in store for her.
My name is Isadora West and this is my story. My sick, twisted, masochistic romance novel written out for you.
Although a thousand leagues two hearts divide,
That love has joined, the gulf is not so great
As that twixt two, who, dwelling side by side
Behold between, the black abyss of Hate.

It started off the same as any other day in my life would; get up, get dressed, skip breakfast, race for the school bus which I will just barely miss and then wish that I hadn't gotten up at all as the carless jocks kick my seat and yell in my face with no remorse. Ah yes, highschool.
But that was just the begininng. I had absolutely no clue what was waiting for me when I stepped through the doors of my Tuscany-styled home. I could tell there was something wrong the moment I stepped into the house. All the lights were off and the blinds were closed, leaving the house pitch black, and me blind.
"Mom?" I called out into the black nothingness. Panic fluttered through my heart as no response was given. If she were here, which she was supposed tobe, the house would be filled with sunlight and the aftersmell of recently baked cookies.
I made hardly any noise on the floorboards as I gracefully walked past the empty kitchen which was spotlessly cleaned. My heart thumped in my chest as I approached the stairs, a sliver of light shooting down them from the door at the top of the walkway.
I could hear voices inside the room and someone walking, but I couldn't make out what they were saying from my current position. My brain told me to call the police and quickly get away, but my heart told me that my mom was in trouble. It seemed my mom was always in trouble now that she moved on from my dads death and married Dracula. My mom had been torn up after my dad's accident and swore she would never love again, but she quickly changed her mind when she met Gregory, a super pale, dark haired, God who talked to shady characters and seemed to attract insane people into our house at random times. Something told me that this was all his fault as well.
I climbed the stairs carefully without making any noise at all, and kneeled down before the door with my ear pressed against its wooden frame. The voices came out much clearer now, but were still a little distant.
"Can't we just go out and find her ourselves? What if she doesn't come home tonight and is at a friends house?" A deep and whiny voice asked. Someone groaned in annoyance and a loud bang came as if someone chucked a chair across the room.
"Because those are not our orders. We wait for this Izzie girl to come home and then we leave. Got it?" A different voice said. The second voice wasn't as deep as the first, but it held much more anger in it as if it had gone to war, watched all his friends get killed and then kept it all bottled up.
"Can't we bend the rules just once?"
"No."
"Why not? You follow Boss's orders way to much."

"You're right. Maybe that's because I quite like being a Nightwalker instead of burning my ass of in the day. If you want to breaking the rules and be downgraded, be my guest. At least then I won't have to work with you anymore." The icy voice snapped, making my quiver. His voice sounded as though it had been packed with an overdose of venom, poised to bite and kill at all times. It reminded me slightly of Gregory's voice which had the power to fill me with fright, a task most people found difficult. The similiarity in the voices just added to my suspicionthat Gregory had something to do with this. I swear if he got my mom hurt or killed, I would track him and kill him with no remorse whatsoever.
I let out a soft whimper at the thought of my mom being dead, and quickly placed my hand over my mouth to muffle it. There was a shuffle of feet and a hushed whisper, leading me to believe that my cover had been blown, but then long moments of silence passed with nomore moving coming from behind the door.
I had no clue how dangerous these guys were, so the only logical thing to do would to call the police and let them take care of it. There was no way, I told myself, that mom could be dead.
No way.
I stood up from my crouching position and turned towards thehall to make my descent down the stairs. I carefully placed my foot on the first stair, praying that the old stairs wouldn't creak beneath me as they usually did at random moments. I'd been lucky coming up the stairs, but going down was a differen-
I cringed and froze as the high pitched sound filled the hall. I squeezed my eyes shut and reopened them, hoping they hadn't heard. I let out a shrill scream as a sudden face appeared in front of me. The figure was a step below me, but still a lot taller than me.
I tipped backwards and nearly fell on my back, but the person caught me, steadying me on my feet. Without another thought, I raced past the figure and down the stairs, not caring about how much the stairs creaked. I ran for the front door and pulled it open, freezing in my tracks as the figure grinned out at me from on the porch. I could see the face fairly clearly from the moonlight now. He had dark, almost black, blue eyes and dark hair that hung over his face. He looked like a younger version of Gregory.
I screamed as loud as I could, hoping the neighbors could hear me and attempted to zoom past the man. With arms as fast as lightening bolts, he grabbed me by the waist and placed his hand over my mouth. Lights flashed on in some of the houses around us and dogs started barking from all around.
The man reached in his pocket, an annoyed expression on his face.
"Fucking humans." He mumbled angrily before pulling out a damp cloth.
The last thing I remember from that moment was the man's sparkling blue eyes dancing with amusement and anger and his luminescant skin seeming to glow like neon light in the dark.
